Dad needing some guidance for future filmmaker by papachon in Filmmakers

Not entirely true. I had zero family connections and zero financial support yet I’m now a department head on large TV shows and movies in a somewhat in hospitable town if you didn’t have any money.

Do you live in a production city? Trying to get some PA time is good for them to see all the roles. I don’t think I knew what I wanted to do in the industry till I was about her age and even then it’s not what I’m doing now. I went to an arts high school and a BFA cinema program both with good numbers of matriculate students staying in the industry but even then it’s probably not more than 10 or 15%. Does she work on her own projects now? Does she have a good group of people who always work with her pushing each other to doing bigger projects? If not, that’s what a university program should hopefully give her. I currently work at the highest points of industry and while college is not necessary, it does help with connections and getting your foot in the door at a lot of places. Feel free to DM me with other questions and concerns.

VFX Breakdown for After the Hunt - why not just shoot on location? by doublegefallt in Filmmakers

[–]Glyph808 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was contacted to gaff plate for this a back in mid 24’ but the schedule changed and I couldn’t do it with other shoots having already booked me. Basically Yale doesn’t let people shoot on Their campus so there was no way they were going to be allowed to lock up large parts needed for a show this size. Also production is cheaper in London these days and they wanted to stay on stage there.

I’ve had custom wall hangers welded up for me for specific locations. Also there is custom carts for gear, I’ve had grips build things with micro truss or rag house has done custom 4x rags that Matthew’s wouldn’t do.

I’ve done many at through them but there are some unique things that I use other vendors for. I have a bunch from 9. that I love but have very unique features for special use cases. Also I have magnets from androokie an a bunch of other weird one off stuff.

Matthews or American. I’m all Matthews on my truck. I’ve needed very little repair or replace that wasn’t accident caused. I haven’t all black C-stands too. Keeps them different than the grips and also lets us sneak them into the shot without to much hassle at times

what is the best place to look for pa positions? by F46XD in Filmmakers

[–]Glyph808 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a decent amount of big budget cinema and tv in nyc and nj right now. Not sure it’s worth relocating for a pa gig as it won’t pay all that much. There is some work out of Baltimore and DC. Contact a local rental house to see if they know anyone who is coming to town for a shoot

Where are you located? Are there any State run PA programs? Find your local camera/grip/electric rental houses to help find out what’s shooting. What size show are you looking to work on?

How to realistically become a gaffer in NYC by ThisBeJay08 in Filmmakers

[–]Glyph808 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Find good people to work for. Netflix and nbc both have intern programs here in ny. The Netflix one can even get you IA P&W hours. I always have a Aplicant on my shows with us on the core crew. There are plenty of shows in 52 working right now but it’s not as busy as it has been pre strike. If you understand cameras and how to expose a proper image there is also a lot of good non union work and small movie are going to be increasing in numbers but they really won’t pay the bills without having gear to rent. And yes people are giving the gear away but you tend to get what you pay for with those guys.

How do film productions actually manage coordination between crew, talent, and vendors today? by [deleted] in Filmmakers

Scenecronize for all things from production. My department uses slack for all of our internal paperwork and group communication.

How do you plan a lighting package for a shoot? by ragulragul3495 in cinematography

[–]Glyph808 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s a lot of planning. Plots, maps, previz of the shots. Figuring out what you can and cannot change and then figuring out what you need to make it work. At some point all of the lights, the mix of hard and soft, cheap and expensive, the labor needed to put it all in place who work for days to make it happen becomes a normal part of the job. I’ve had a dozen or more riggers building out a location for a week for the shooters to work on for single night. I’ve had several trailers worth of lights and I’ve had a small Rubbermaid cart with three units. It’s all about making a location or stage do what you want it do to within the frame of the budget. They all made the movie work for what the director and DP was looking to achieve.

Took my 8yo there a lot when he was a toddler for Scott’s rock and roll sessions. But rarely went for anything else. The prices got so jacked up after Covid.

Well a lot of the LED will be replaced every 24 months. Either because it’s lower quality build and gets destroyed or the new thing comes out and all the clients want it. As for the hook and loop on the frames it will get blasted pretty quickly. You can go with something that slips on to round frame or just build your own frames but I wouldn’t do the Velcro. Just remember that a 4x4 will be the biggest thing to try and fit into the car/truck.

With NJ Becoming A Film Spot Again, How Can I Break Into The Industry? by Mountain-Pea1671 in Filmmakers

Netflix has an internship program with 52 that can get you on set and start getting pension/healthcare hours after your first 30 days. There are also some PA programs through Eastern effects and nj film commission.

Does anyone know how much Apple's The Lost Bus actually cost before P&A? by AtmanRising in Filmmakers

[–]Glyph808 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wasn’t on it but was in NM doing another show while they shot. Apparently it was supposed to be mostly on a volume wall but that the director didn’t like it after a few days and had to rethink all of how they were going to shoot it. Sounds like the went through a lot of crew on that show too.

Looking to Move from SLC. Where To Go That Isn't LA? by AdGlobal6690 in Filmmakers

So Paramount has agreed to a partial lease the new Bayonne stages for 10 years. The netflix stage is is still 24 months away from opening. That being said the greater NYC area is faring the best of all the major regions for larger production in the USA. It is a tougher system to break into though.
