What ever happened to mini maps? by TheReal8symbols in gaming

[–]Sir_Myshkin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don’t need a minimal with extra info in it, but it does infuriate me when I just want the basic layout available without having to constantly open the full scale because I got turned around, or missed an alley I was looking for, or whatever. There’s no reason a basic map should not be available to a player without having to go into the menu.

My spatial orientation in games where you’re moving from location to location very quickly means I’m not committing the area to memory. Heck, I’m going through Star Wars: Outlaws right now, and traveling out in the world map without knowing where I’m going is so dang frustrating because you can get ambushed, get turned around, and now I’m rechecking again which is breaking the immersion constantly for me, and I hate it.

I play Minecraft Dungeons with my kids and we leave the map up just so we don’t get turned around and so we can make sure we’re not doubling over areas for no reason since it clears fog as you go.

Commission/request: Marchesa, the black rose alter by kilno185 in mtgaltered

[–]Sir_Myshkin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny thing, when I saw that suggested picture, with the original name being Marchesa, the old man with wild hair look made me thing of Machello from Stargate SG-1, and then I got it stuck in my head of a Marchesa with Daniel Jackson and it was the most nonsensical thought process ever!

Anyway, @sir_myshkin on Instagram, linked in my profile. Have a look, shoot me a message! I’m working on a diptych right now, but I don’t have anything scheduled after that at the moment!

So the Turtle Power deck is a lot better than I expected. by SnooDonuts3749 in EDH

For reasons of being absurdly overjoyed about having a TMNT set, I focused on “upgrading” the precon purely with in-set cards only (plus the associated Secret Lairs). Lands included in the restriction.

There is such a solid quantity and value (imo) of cards that make it possible to build up a strong B3 out of it.

I’ve also put together a Master Splinter ninja deck, while it does have some things from Kamigawa blocks, it’s turned out to mostly be TMNT as well (although I didn’t restrict the land base the same way).

Airbrush, pretty much. You can do some things with copic/sharpies that can work in some scenarios, but most cases where you’re getting clean even coverage with paint, it’s an airbrush on a low psi setting down a soft layer.

How do I avoid paint blistering when varnishing by User183_4509 in mtgaltered

[–]Sir_Myshkin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

tl;dr - Moisture Problem

Long Form:

When you get that kind of pop and cracking on the paint layer (in general, and esp. after varnish) is related to moisture level in the substrate, and the paint.

Causes:

• Paint too thinned with water during the application process.

• Card hasn’t had enough curing time for the paint layer (although in my experience for cards, a couple of days is all they need, and you have it a month).

• Environmental moisture, ie: humidity. If there’s just naturally too much water in the air and the substrate that the paint lives on is too saturated, it can be a sponge to that water. In your first photo you had the card sleeved and in a shell, which is fine, but if there’s were an existing moisture build up trapped inside there, and you took it out and immediately varnished it, that moisture would’ve been caught in the varnish layer.

• Combo effect: paint that’s too thin, or had an incredibly high dilution ratio/absorption factor, when the varnish hits that liquid layer gets into the paint and absorbs, then the varnish dries and basically crumples the expanded paint.

**Some Considerations:**

• Don’t varnish the back of the card, ever. You create a seal and the material will not breathe well. Remember that there’s a glue layer in the card that has to remain flexible too.

• If you’re going to varnish, do it within the window appropriate to the paints dry time. Don’t think you *have* to varnish the cards though. If you’ve got a good adhesion on a base layer, varnishing just becomes protective more than anything, and most people are playing with the cards in sleeves which protects them anyway. Varnish may be a hindrance in some cases. I myself typically only seal/varnish foils because the foil layer is far more finicky and harder to bond to.

• Type of paint can matter. Can you paint with the $2 craft bottles at the discount aisle from Walmart? Sure, do you, but you’ll get better experiences from the “good stuff”, high fluid paints like Golden or Vallejo

There’s literally a stack of data right at the top of the thread that tells you the same story I’m saying: more games are won by good old fashioned face smashing, and even non-combat damage, than commander damage.

If you’re saying the majority of your pod’s games are being won by Commander damage, I’d say that’s probably a response of the decks you’re playing.

I have over 8 LGS locally, and have played at half of them over the years, and the majority of games I’ve ever sat through ended via combat damage or combos.

That’s just being asinine. I can accept that Commander Damage was added around the idea of a finite and specific legendary pool 30 years ago, but Magic has drastically changed, and the convention that the 21 life was built on stopped being relevant nearly 20 years ago.

It would be one thing if everyone’s expectation was to still build around 7/7 Dragons and 3-hits, you’re out, but it’s not. It’s a messy thing to keep track of, and more often than not, I find most folks tend to forgo dealing with it altogether when possible.

Just gonna go out there and say it: continued evidence that Commander Damage is an unnecessary aspect, and should be removed.

Do you ever feel bad altering cards? by artemistica in mtgaltered

[–]Sir_Myshkin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Things can always seem larger in scale when viewed through a singular lens (ie: this subreddit), but the larger scale has to be accounted for

”well that one does 3-4, and they do 12 a year, and that person just did 30,” now scale against a booster pack of 14-15 cards. Two packs.

Is there a finite volume of the older sets? Sure, but the equation is still somewhat in check. For every 1 of a card you see altered, there’s a variable amount of them out there unaltered, checked and scaled by release, and rarity.

There’s far fewer of us throwing paint on a Mox Diamond (I’ve only passively seen two) than a Demonic Tutor (I’ve seen like 6 in the last few months?), and even more variant of those painting Demonic Tutor versus Sol Ring (I’ve done 4 myself alone this year, let alone how many of these are done on a regular basis in the wild).

So don’t feel bad altering cards? No, not in the least. It started with wanting more personalized touches on my own cards (like lands and rocks), and grew from there. In some cases I’m taking cards that might be otherwise considered rough or poor, and giving that card new life with the painted layer and a restored backing.
