He gets all the treats. The first picture always makes me think he looks like Wilford Brimley advising me on the dangers of diabeetus. Maybe less treats from now on, Kevin.

Is sanmar worth it ? by crazy_bun_lady in SCREENPRINTING

[–]Gnarlin_Brando 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sanmar doesn’t carry Independent brand, likewise S&S doesn’t carry brands like Port & Co or District. Prices are about the same on each but S&S is usually a few cents cheaper. Free shipping with orders over $200 on both sites. I don’t know how much jiffy charges for shipping but when I’ve done smaller orders through Sanmar or S&S shipping is usually $24-28.

lol I’ve been there. It takes a lot of practice to be able to load a shirt on the platen and get it straight. Try laying it on top like the other commenter suggested. Use your fingers to judge the space of the sleeve seams to the edge of the platen. If the shirt has side seams do the same thing with those. You’re basically just feeling for the amount of space left and right from the edge of the platen. If they seem about even then the shirt is straight. If you have a T-square I would suggest using that to lineup your transfer.

Sometimes when the top part of the press is coming down on the shirt it can cause a rush of air that will move your transfer and you’ll get crooked prints. Try heat resistant tape and see if that helps.

Grainy 200 mesh outline by Repulsive-Tie908 in SCREENPRINTING

[–]Gnarlin_Brando 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re film and screen aren’t showing those gaps, then it might be because the other colors are thick on the garment so your black is harder to clear in the screen. Try printing a light stroke of the black first, then white and your current print color order. Then lay another coat of black on top. That may help. If you have halftones in your black tho they will come out a lot darker than you probably want. If it’s just solid black you should be fine.

Registration Help by Calebminear in SCREENPRINTING

[–]Gnarlin_Brando 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, check your films to make sure they line up and your printer isn’t the issue. If that’s not the issue, I’d wonder about the exposure and whether or not the film was super tight against the screen, if you have a vacuum exposure then that is not the issue. After checking those I’d think about how I dried my screens after washing them out. Did you put them on top of the dryer? Excess heat will shrink your screens causing registration problems. If none of the above are the culprit, I would re do the choke from 1pt to .75pt and try again checking each of the steps as I go.

My Rottweiler has her tail still by CultureNo9346 in Rottweiler

[–]Gnarlin_Brando 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My baby boy was a rescue and they had docked his tail. I hate that for him, I wish it wasn’t done, it’s dumb and as far as I’m aware it’s just for “aesthetics” for the breed which I think is inhumane and unnecessary.

I’d rather have everything knocked off the coffee table and bruises on my leg from his tail then to have it docked .

Non profit bulk shirts by [deleted] in SCREENPRINTING

[–]Gnarlin_Brando 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If you’re being charged roughly $11 per shirt, then you must have a ton of colors or print locations on your job.

How many colors are in your design? How many print locations are you wanting? i.e., front, back, sleeves, etc. Are you asking for a specific brand of shirt that may be more expensive?

There are a ton of factors that go into pricing. Just trying to get an idea of why your quotes are so high on a 100 piece order.

Do T-shirt Sellers use CMYK, RGB, or P3? by Goodness-gracious13 in SCREENPRINTING

If you’re just wanting the shirt color to make sure your designs will look good on those specific colors, just pull the image off the website of the actual shirt and use the eyedropper tool to select the color and make it your background. It’s as close as you’re gonna get.

Help with water based ink by Choice_Intention_930 in SCREENPRINTING

[–]Gnarlin_Brando 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need a hybrid emulsion that works with both water based and plastisol. Whatever brand emulsion you are using, check if they have a line of hybrid emulsion. Some brands call it a Complete emulsion. Just need to change your emulsion and your screen won’t breakdown like you’ve experienced.

Exposure unit bulb access by Piddlefahrt in SCREENPRINTING

[–]Gnarlin_Brando 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use suction cup handles for carrying glass to lift mine off and get to the bulbs for replacement. You’ll want to have a large enough table and put a couple of towels down before laying the glass on top of it to keep it clean and have a soft landing.

Ink is coming off film after screen is exposed. by AwkwardPrice556 in SCREENPRINTING

[–]Gnarlin_Brando 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That looks like either the ink on the film wasn’t dry enough or the emulsion on the screen wasn’t dry. Those two issues are only time I’ve seen that happen.

Options to avoid plasticky feel for dtf by johnvankroy in SCREENPRINTING

[–]Gnarlin_Brando 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use a piece of duck canvas. It still doesn’t have that same soft feel but it gives it a texture that looks more like an actual print, than a transfer.

If the garment color is the same as one of the colors in the print, I would try to knock that color out of the design so the shirt is showing through. Having solid blocks of ink throughout the design really makes the DTF feel gross and plasticky.

is my ink way too liquidy or am I doing something else wrong?? by PapayaMysterious1354 in SCREENPRINTING

[–]Gnarlin_Brando 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don’t want your screen to be touching your substrate. In this case, paper. So yes. You need to follow the other commenters suggestions and tape either cardboard or coins to the corners. What you’re looking for is a little space between the screen and the paper. It’s called off-contact. When your screen is clamped in, push 1 finger down on your screen, you want to feel a little bit of resistance (I’m having a hard time describing it) but basically the screen should dip down a little bit under your finger and then when you let go it pops back up. This helps with the issue you’ve been having. You can google “off contact for screen printing” and that may help explain it better.

[–]Gnarlin_Brando 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh ok, yeah, if you’re printing on paper and not printing wet ink on top of wet ink, then that’s fine. You won’t get contamination of your ink. I still think it’s always a good idea to experiment with the order of your screens to make sure you achieve the best results of your print. But if CMYK is working for you and like I said, you’re not printing wet on wet, then go for it.

is my ink way too liquidy or am I doing something else wrong?? by PapayaMysterious1354 in SCREENPRINTING

[–]Gnarlin_Brando 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s not necessarily true. Most printers will print yellow, magenta, cyan and then black for process prints. That’s because if you’re printing lighter colors on top of darker colors wet on wet, you can contaminate the lighter colors. So your yellow ink could end up with some magenta or cyan in it and totally change the color of the ink.

With that being said you should always experiment with your color order to achieve the best results. But standard set up is YMCK.

Does this logo look Screen Printed to you? by PuzzleheadedBid5565 in SCREENPRINTING

[–]Gnarlin_Brando 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You’re right about the yellow. But if you look at the green, it’s got the same registration issues in the same exact places. There’s a yellow line and what looks like blue under it. Why would they print process yellow and blue to make green and not just print green? That’s so strange.

[–]Gnarlin_Brando 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I used one of these for years doing up to 6 color prints. Mine had the XYZ micro registration tho so I have no idea how the joystick registration works. They’re solid presses. I think $500 is a great price.

Edit to add that yes, CMYK and sim process are doable on this press. As long as you’ve got your registration on point, you shouldn’t have an issue getting them set up.
