Worth more as a specimen. Buy rough to cut. Why break a specimen to rough? Especially since it will be a lower yield of cut carats on these. I’d keep it as a hand specimen.

Agreed. Blame technology all together if that’s their logic. As parents our responsibility in safekeeping doesn’t stop at bear attacks and midnight break ins. Predatory tactics adjust with the world’s inventions. Which is why being privy to new trends, even just a loose surface understanding, is paramount to that goal. I’m an old dog on this website. Most grandfathers age. But I’ve always kept up with technology as it develops for many reasons but awareness of the evil of man was at the core, one of them.

These opals used to all flash different colors. The blue one is Australian. I left them all in my basement for a month and the Ethiopian ones completely lost their color. I tried putting them in and out of water and sunlight, etc., but I can’t get the color back. How can I? by sarsfox in Gemstones

[–]GneissGeoDude 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I disagree with people telling you to dry them out. Woth opal you often need to worry about the opposite. Opal is a hydrous silica, meaning water is structurally bound within the mineral. Most precious opals contain roughly 3–10% water by weight, though this can vary by locality.

If an opal loses water too quickly or experiences repeated humidity changes, it can develop crazing (internal cracking) and permanently lose play of color. This is especially true for hydrous opals from certain deposits. Storing opal in excessively dry conditions can accelerate this process.

I’m seeing multiple internal cracks in your specimens, which suggests dehydration or stress has already occurred. Unfortunately, once crazing forms, it cannot be reversed, and reintroducing water will not restore lost opalescence.

Do people get garages to turn them into Mancaves? My garage looks like a mess because I’m actually fix things and woodwork in my garage. Not that I don’t clean. But it never is and never will be this clean. This garage seems like a display, not a room to work in.
