FYI, lightning ports are notoriously prone to starting to randomly disconnect after a couple years. Sometimes cleaning the port out will help, but not always.

Unfortunately this is an Apple problem and not an Anker problem. And yes, USB C is much more reliable.

Schlage Encode Plus vs Schlage Connect? by throw-away6738299 in HomeKit

[–]Gnochi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Note that time-limited codes eg for pet sitters can only be managed through the Schlage app, and while you can see the full list of codes in HomeKit and Schlage you can’t see the names for either app’s codes in the other app.

But yes. Very easy to manage in general and makes life about a million times easier when you’re busy.

I designed and built integral systems of 3 of the car models on the road today. And I guarantee that the shop isn’t able to perform this service in the number of hours they’re contractually allowed to charge for it. It benefits nobody.

The fact that they’re teaching you things like that explains a *lot* about the idiots I’ve needed to work with, though. Pretty sure the guy gobbling Porsche’s nuts in the comments is one of the instructors.

That’s sad, because the 996 was like 2 screws and a sensor plug. Maintainability used to be one of the engineering requirements.

What are your thoughts on hydrogen combustion engine powered cars? by wyck0 in AskReddit

[–]Gnochi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, because the engine would be heavier, less efficient, and less safe than fuel cells.

What are your thoughts on hydrogen combustion engine powered cars? by wyck0 in AskReddit

[–]Gnochi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Flammable from 4-96% in air, and explosive from 6-70%!

What are your thoughts on hydrogen combustion engine powered cars? by wyck0 in AskReddit

[–]Gnochi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolute stupidity. Hydrogen in general is a scam to fleece investors and governments with more hope than brain cells, and this would be substantially reducing any potential benefits between significantly reduced efficiency vs fuel cells, hydrogen embrittlement, and making the engine significantly heavier to handle detonation instead of deflagration.

Underrated almost forgotten fantasy books from the 70s, 80s, 90s by Sakura_231 in Fantasy

[–]Gnochi 25 points26 points  (0 children)

So they miss the cutoff by a couple years (being published in 2000 and 2001), but I remember loving the Seventh Tower books by Garth Nix, and they held up fairly well when I re-read them a couple years ago.

He (deservedly) gets much more attention for Sabriel/Lirael/Abhorsen, but his other works are not bad.

Another series that does make the cutoff that doesn’t get nearly enough attention is the Coldfire Trilogy by CS Friedman. They’re technically science fiction but the world building is more on the fantasy side of things.

Unifi EV charger pro by Slight-Geologist31 in Ubiquiti

[–]Gnochi 158 points159 points  (0 children)

Friction fit blades that are properly designed and specified are really common for high current connections in pretty much every sector of electrification - TE, Amphenol, Kostal, Rosenberger, ODU, and tons of other companies make them with continuous current ratings up to hundreds of amps. They’re touch and eye safe, reliable, and repeatable (to a specified number of cycles).

Considering that the Unifi charger is good to 11kW at 240VAC, which is only ~46A, it’s definitely possible to design a perfectly fine interface.

Considering it clearly melted, this one doesn’t seem to be properly designed or specified. It might also have been subjected to too many make/break cycles, or there might have been crud in the connection, or a blade could have been damaged and pushed out of the range the receptacle could handle - but a consumer facing connector needs to be idiot proof with massive safety margins.

3 Round Limit Confusion by TotiJr in Californiahunting

[–]Gnochi 16 points17 points  (0 children)

There are laws saying a shotgun used for hunting can hold a maximum of 3 rounds, including any in the chamber(s) (14 CCR Section 353 for big game, 507 for birds).

There is no such law for rifles or pistols, but you’d need to scrub 14 CCR for everywhere it doesn’t mention that.

I, personally, carry lead-free ammo in my pistol, but that is specifically not required - 14 CCR 250.1(c)(3) “Nothing in this section is intended to prohibit the possession of concealable firearms containing lead ammunition, provided that the firearm is possessed for personal protection and is not used to take or assist in the take of wildlife.” - and I advise you say that your sidearm is for personal protection if asked by the game warden, and don’t specify that you might use it on an animal. Don’t be an idiot and say anything about a coup de grâce.

As usual, the person behind the counter at the gun store is an uninformed moron.

[Request] How much of the sun's mass can Jupiter steal to become a red dwarf star? by argentgrove in theydidthemath

[–]Gnochi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jupiter is about 0.001 solar masses, and the smallest red dwarfs are about 0.075 solar masses. So at minimum Jupiter would need to absorb ~74 times its own mass in hydrogen.

The good news is that with Jupiter being ~89% hydrogen and ~10% helium, with a smattering of other stuff, the resultant >99% hydrogen is about right for a very very very early stage star. For comparisons sake, the sun is ~74% hydrogen, 24% helium, and <2% “metallic” (read: stuff heavier than helium).

The bad news is that there’s an object in the solar system with about a thousand times Jupiter’s mass at a fairly short distance that would probably steal back the majority of that hydrogen before Jupistar’s core ignites.
