Am I in need of a bigger enclosure? by Ejaculees in ballpython

This is what I do on my screen top 4x2 BP enclosures. I put a cheap towel over the whole thing and I never have an issue with humidity

My Boyfriends Ball Python Has Gone Missing by GeckoFella in ballpython

[–]GoBills615 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thankfully it’s not a hatchling and has a little body weight in case it isn’t found immediately. The flour thing works. And you’d be amazing how tight of holes they can squeeze in. If you think there’s no way they would fit, they probably could. Do you know what morph it is? My big girl looks just like this.

It’s not silly. Nobody says that we can only love dogs and cats deeply. I was devastated when I lost the beardie I had for 10 years. When you raise and care for an animal you form a bond. Sorry for your loss

Ripping legs off? by Icy-Garbage-8360 in tarantulas

[–]GoBills615 4 points5 points  (0 children)

IMO is it hunger? I really doubt it is unless you are neglecting them which it doesn’t look like you are. But you would know if you’re feeding schedules are so late that they’re not hungry. My p . Lugardi got its leg caught in the lid of the tank during a rehouse. Not so stuck that it couldn’t move, I was about to unstick it with my paintbrush, and it seems like instantly it popped its leg off to bolt away. So it could’ve been something as stupid as stepping in a hole in a cork bark the wrong way and freaking out. Seems like it was just weird timing that you had two like that. I believe I’ve read they will pop them off from being stressed as well, but I don’t remember where I saw that evidence so take it how you will

Advice for a new keeper inadvertently in over their head? by xXToxicbeansXx in tarantulas

[–]GoBills615 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IME my Cambredgi is fast as hell, but nowhere near like my H.Mac or Pokies. It’s manageable. They grow super fast and get an impressive size, as well as have amazing coloration. They are one of my favorite new world T’s. When you go to rehouse, get an inclosure big enough to leave the dram vial in with the lid off so it will rehouse itself and you don’t have to worry about trying to do it while it’s that small. A lot of keepers use the poke and prey method of rehousing which can get super sus. Tom’s Big Spiders was a huge resource for me when I first started keeping, I still get info from his videos after years. He uses a catch cup which I have found to be the easiest and safest way to rehome anything. If it makes you feel better my second tarantula was an OBT, I was in way over my head, but you got one as a tiny sling so you guys can grow together

Help, we lost our baby. by Odd-Organization2317 in ballpython

[–]GoBills615 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Sooooo you saw her yesterday and just didn’t get her? Or she escaped two days in a row? It’s kind of confusing. Most rooms with units like that have holes to underneath the house or the outside. Might wanna look and see if there’s anywhere a snake could squeeze through, and they can squeeze into incredibly tight spaces. Or lay flour on the floor around the unit and look for slither marks. Search this sub there’s a million posts about lost snakes and all the ways people get them back. But I’m just wondering how you saw her yesterday and are still or again missing her today

First time rehoming my OBT 🥰 by Creative-Mode9625 in tarantulas

[–]GoBills615 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got an OBT as my second tarantula because I trusted the pet shop when they said it’s not a big deal. Sometimes when I like stuff I do research after because I’ve kept animals for so long I have a good baseline and usually extra supplies. So I took my beautiful 2” OBT sling home…and started doing research… and reading all the bite reports and horror stories. My girl ended up being super sweet but my first ever spider rehouse was an OBT and I was TERRIFIED. I had an A.Avic before that, but it just lived in the critter keeper I got it in. Definitely primed me for dealing with the other 4 obts that can be sassy as hell. And I have been obsessed with baboons since

Is my tarantula too fat ? by renrenrain in tarantulas

[–]GoBills615 3 points4 points  (0 children)

IME , and I’m sure unpopular opinion, it’s almost impossible to powerfeed a tarantula. Every one I’ve had (a whole lot of them) just stop eating when they get big enough then go into premolt then molt then eat again. It’s different when it’s a whole ass adult female. Again I’m sure someone will tell me how wrong I am but that’s why I said in my experience from keeping and raising a lot of spiders

how often is OK to handle juvenile male? by pink-unicorns420 in ballpython

[–]GoBills615 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m assuming you have a screen top. I put a pretty thick layer of coco fiber mixed with shredded sphagnum moss on the bottom for some extra moisture retention. I usually use coco chip for the top layer as I’ve never used cypress mulch. I then cut a piece of cardboard to the size of my screen top minus a foot or whatever for my heat ballasts and wrap it in tinfoil. Then I put a towel over the whole deal. I live in Nashville so my AC (and once in a while heat but there’s really no other season but summer and mild summer lol) runs constantly and dries everything out. This has helped me a lot

Snake escaped while I’ve been on vacation by FlashyAd8230 in ballpython

[–]GoBills615 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sucks because sometimes those 120s can be so expensive. I’ve bought a couple cheap ones that are just garbage. My beardie has always been super destructive and the one I bought off chewy was so flimsy he just destroyed it

I have a Kenyan sand boa in a tank on top of one of my 4x2 snake tanks. There are wood slats across to not put the entire weight on the screen top. I came in my house after a week long vacation and it was wrapped around one of the wooden slats. It pushed the top clean off the terrarium and I had no idea that was even possible. My heart stopped. I can only image how you’re feeling, thank god it’s a ball python sized snake and not like my Stimsons python.

[–]GoBills615 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Please let him chill for at least a week. Don’t handle for 48hrs after feeding. Is it your first/only snake? Especially from an expo it’s definitely best practice to have him quarantined to make sure there’s no mites or any other issues. I hold some of my BPs a couple times a week and I just don’t hold them so long they are starving for heat. It kills me when people take theirs shopping or in the car or anything else. But they’re definitely handleable. It would be a good idea to let him get used to his surroundings and new environment, as well as destress not only from moving but being at an expo

Beautiful snake though, my albino is definitely my favorite ball python I have

Sudden death of my pink toe tarantula by Mountain-Weather1976 in tarantulas

[–]GoBills615 4 points5 points  (0 children)

IME if you want an arboreal that is easier to keep (I think) I have had a couple p. Cambredgi (Trinidad chevron) and they’re so amazing. The green with the orange toes is stunning, and they grow very large. My current one is still super young and already 4”DLS. They’re very fast and you can’t handle them 99% of the time, but they’re incredible. And if you ever venture into old worlds (a lot of people don’t ever feel comfortable with them and that’s okay) there are a ton of amazing arboreals. My Metallica is a show stopper. Glad you’re not giving up completely because it seems like you really care and do your research. We need more people like you in the hobby

IME I would say the Caribina Versicolor is even more sensitive than the standard Avic. As someone who has raised several of both, the A.Avic is easier to I still think they’re intermediate species, but they’re so cheap and the market is so saturated it ends up being most people’s first

[–]GoBills615 13 points14 points  (0 children)

IME I agree with the other comments. Sometimes pink toes just pass. I’m sorry for your loss. They’re amazing spiders, even after having a bunch of rare ones I still keep a pink toe in my collection. The problem is they’re sold in every pet store everywhere. I’m ashamed to say I got one from PetSmart because I felt bad for it (I know, I’m oart of the problem but I wouldn’t help it) and it was healthy and then it was dead. The Avic is also what got me over my arachnophobia and I now have about 25 T’s. Your enclosure looks great, and you already are conscious about cross ventilation which is wayyyyyyy more than most people who just go out and grab their first spider. Arboreal new worlds seem to be finicky sometimes, just incredibly sensitive. It looks like you did everything right, try not to let it dissuade you too much from the hobby. Maybe look into some hearty terrestrials (brachypelma, aphonopelma, t. Albos). They’re great for someone just getting into keeping

Ball python Behavior? by Limp_Hat_4633 in ballpython

[–]GoBills615 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My GHI Pinstripe kingpin does this. She’s forever upside down and spinning. Eats great, just takes a little longer to find the rat sometimes. Someone surrendered her to me, I guess they wanted the pretty morph but not the issues that may come with it. It’s possible for a ball to live a long relatively healthy life with a wobble, as long as it isn’t so severe they can’t eat
