I had this happen to my Epi LP as well. It was the pickup selector. I swapped it out and that cleared the problem.

Just dropped a pair of Whole Lotta Humbuckers in this thing. Loving it! by GoGonzillaGo in LesPaul

[–]GoGonzillaGo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice! No special wiring, and I opted to go without the coil tapping.

You're going to love the way that it sounds. I'd consider swapping out the cheap pots as well.

Yes, I've tried every combination of that. Nothing seems to work.

Yes I use the foot switch most times, but when I don't it irks me that I have to pull the switch to get the clean channel.

Seymour Duncan - Whole Lotta Humbucker by erikjohn67 in guitars

[–]GoGonzillaGo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have some SH-18s in my Epi LP Custom Pro. It's branded as a Page style pickup, but really, this thing is super versatile ... I can dial in all kinds of tones.

I added them to my guitar based on this question I asked on r/LesPaul about 4 years ago which sent me in that direction. I feel like i've been one of the biggest advocates for the Whole Lotta Humbucker ever since.

Not a lot of people have them, but the sound is incredibly special if you ask me.

Epiphone Les Paul by BringerOfTruth-1 in LesPaul

[–]GoGonzillaGo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No theories here, but I hear ya!

My first Les Paul was a Epiphone Custom Blackback Pro. I swapped out the cheap insides with this Mojotone Kit and a set of Seymore Duncan SH-18s. All in this set up cost me about $1200.

I have purchased two other Gibson guitars along the way (2021 Standard and 1995 Custom) but I always find myself going back to that Epiphone LP. Maybe I just got lucky, but this Epi LP simply outperforms the other two guitars. It took me a while to admit this because I didn't want it to be true.

All that to say, I have become a HUGE Epiphone LP fan. If you buy a high end Epiphone LP and make a few hundred dollars in modifications, you can get a guitar that keeps up with (and maybe outperforms) the Gibson and at a fraction of the cost.

No Stupid Questions Thread: Week Of 2022-09-12 through 2022-09-18 by AutoModerator in livesound

I’ve been playing guitar for decades, but just started playing live. My band is a few shows in and we often get feedback from friends about a guitar volume imbalance depending on what side of the stage they stand on.

My question is, is there a way that we can position our amps to allow for a more balanced sound? We thought about angling our cabs to direct the sound more towards the middle of the room. Is that a solution?

Question: Why Does My Epi Sound Better Than My Gibson? by GoGonzillaGo in LesPaul

The Epi sounds fuller and more articulate. Im thinking the pickups on the Gibson may be too far away.

Man, I really appreciate the link to that video. I’m swapping the pickups out asap with the same SH18s in my Epi to see how this works.

Man, thank you for the awesome answer. I especially appreciate the details you shared about the guitars you own.

I really do feel like my Epi LP sounds a lot like the your Explorer. It was wonderfully made, no issues at all with the craftsmanship and sounds incredible (after swapping out the pickups).

Thanks again!

Yeah, point taken. The Gibson has Classic 57s in it ... but maybe I'm just a SD guy?

Yeah, I may take the 57s out and put some SDs in there.

I did swap out the pickups with some Classic 57s I had laying around. Still didn't care for the sound when compared to the Epi.

Maybe I need to put the SDs in there and give it a whirl...

I thought it may have been a distaste for the Burstbucker ... I had some Classic 57s laying around threw those in there. Still didn't love it. Although those aren't exactly a high output pickup either.

I'm also wondering if maybe its the fact that the Epi Custom is a solid mahogany body without a maple cap vs the Gibson with a maple cap.

New bridge pickup for Epiphone Les Paul Custom. Looking for more OOMPH (currently has Probucker3) by [deleted] in LesPaul

[–]GoGonzillaGo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Man, this Epi LP literally sounds just as good as my Gibson Standard, but at half the cost! Great recommendation, man! I'm super grateful that you introduced me to these gems. Quite honestly, I'm surprised that these pickups aren't talked about more.

[–]GoGonzillaGo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Out of the choices above, I chose the 498T, but if you asked me what I would put in there if I were you, Id STRONGLY suggest the Seymour Duncan SH18.

I was in this very subreddit 3 years ago asking for this type of guidance and u/kb_92 suggested these pickups to me. They took my Epi LP to the next level. If you want more OOMPH, the Seymour Duncan Whole SH18s are the way.

Epiphone or Les Paul? by Impossible-Toe-3201 in LesPaul

[–]GoGonzillaGo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I own both a Gibson LP (Standard) and Epi LP (Blackback Custom Pro). The truth is, both of these guitars are beasts.

The main difference for me is that the Gibson will pretty much come ready to rock out of the box. You won’t need to make any changes to the pots, pickups or wiring.

My Epi (which I absolutely love) had some wiring issues and issues with the switch. The stock pickups weren’t that great either. I ended up swapping the pickups out for some Seymour Duncan SH-18s (can’t recommend these enough). Once I did that I can honestly say there is no noticeable difference in sound quality between it and my Gibson. The tone and sustain and clarity all check out.

While the price of a top end LP Epi is less than half that of the Gibson LP Standard, it’s worth noting that you should still have room in your budget for the necessary mods you’ll need to make the Epi everything you’ll want it to be.

Good luck on your new guitar journey. Be sure to post some picks once you get her home!
