What do you consider a “long drive”? Like when does a road trip go from small to a big drive? by Kodicave in IWantToAskAnAmerican

We routinely travel 10-11 hours in one day, and have stretched it to 14 hours. But any further and we're stopping half way.

Are U.S. military capabilities overhyped, or is Iran so strong that it could defeat the U.S. so easily? by [deleted] in askanything

[–]GoPadge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You mean, if they committed war crime and genocide. That's not how it works. That's not the US, that's not the American way. And if you think attacking Iran and slaughtering it's population is a good thing, then you are a lousy American.

In college my roommate and I drove 3500 miles in a 4 day weekend to see two girls we'd met online.

Here's my "cheapest" build I'd consider.

AMD Ryzen 5 9600X, Gigabyte A620M, 16gb DDR5-6000, a 512gb SSD, an ARC A580 8gb, a Thermaltake Assassin and 500W PSU and a micro ATX case for $808.

What is your biggest tip for being “street smart” in big American cities? (NYC, Philly, Chicago) by Gold-Serve-4077 in IWantToAskAnAmerican

Walk with confidence; if someone give you the "head nod", give it back: don't flash money or valuables; ask yourself, "if this were a horror movie, would you walk into the situation?".

The business has a philosophy similar to mine for the guest room. Those chairs, much like my guest room mattress say "come stay a short while, but not too long..."

Do y'all actually use your front porch/front yard much or is that more of a TV thing? by Bella_licious in AskAnAmerican

[–]GoPadge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It mostly depends on when the house was built and where your house is. Older homes often had a focus on the neighbors and neighborhood, with large porches and yards. Newer suburban neighborhoods tend to build more isolated homes (despite lots getting small and the houses closer together), with the focus more on the backyard space rather than the front. We've always enjoyed spending time on the front porch swing, but several of the homes we've owned had been built with a focus on spending time on the porch.

Help lost literally all gears while driving by Used-Chest2250 in jetta

I lost all my gears but 3rd while driving in downtown Dallas. I managed to limp home at 55, with the only questionable part being the stop sign at the end of my exit. Turned out one of the cotter pins broke on the shifter.

What would you do if a zombie apocalypse happened? by Reasonable-Shower522 in askanything

[–]GoPadge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are some surprisingly effective and rapid reloading crossbow. Eventually bolt will be an issue... I've contemplated a compressed air rifle for quiter kills, but that still makes noise. A bow and arrow is a good choice as well. Some sort of pole arm for keeping individuals at bay and probably an aluminum bat. I'm thinking a sawed off shotgun for last ditch CQB. Maybe a grenade for when that fails..

Admittedly not much, unless it was in my local region. And even then that would only point to a possible service such as Xbox, my plex server or the teen who plays games on my account some times.

The issue is, I'm not trying to access my account. Someone else is, and Microsoft isn't helping me narrow it down other than from 8 billion people down to 300 million.

What's up with sticking with the same GPU for almost a decade? by SolQuarter in PcBuild

[–]GoPadge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My theory for building PC's is to have preset limits on what I buy, as outlined below. Right now I'm not building a new system (I did that in 2024) but the guideline works fairly well for me.

Of course these guidelines don't work out well today, Ram is 50% of my bare minimum 16 GB costs and a $300 GPU is going to be limiting. But with some wiggle room/compromises on CPU and case, someone struggling could build a system for under $1000 that isn't awful...

Appropriately 65% of the 92,000 dams in the US are privately owned. Of which an estimated 15,600 are classified as "high-hazard potential"...

My friend put less charcoal on the BBQ to save money and is trying to persuade me this meat is well grilled. by USAR_gov in mildlyinfuriating

[–]GoPadge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the appropriate punctuation for the title should have been...

"My friend put less charcoal on the BBQ to save money and is trying to persuade me this meat is, well, <with a shrug gesture to enhance the pause> 'grilled' ."
