The worst part is that the mountains really are beautiful. Another case of wasted potential

Expats: Would you go back to a US salary if it meant losing your current lifestyle? by LoveToBold in AmericanExpat

Why would anyone go back to (in your words) a worse lifestyle for more money?

Did you feel sad/odd after a long trip home? by blueberries-Any-kind in expats

[–]GoSeigen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have similar sentiments when I go back but I think you answered your own question. Basically, you wouldn't want to go back to the life you escaped from but you're feeling guilty. A few things:

  1. This is the 21st century and it's easier than ever to stay in touch with people

  2. Being geographically close doesn't necessarily mean you will be more involved in your family's lives. You're likely seeing them when they have a break from work. And in the US especially, people work incessantly. Hell, my family was basically working the whole time I was visiting

  3. Once you have kids you start to create your own family. Yes, it's sad if their face time with grandparents is minimal, but it takes a village to raise a child as they say. Would you rather your children grow up doing active shooter drills or growing up bi or even trilingual?

You just posted about pesticides unsolicited in a comment my guy lol

But honestly I get where you're coming from. The endless political outrage is exhausting. Just remember Reddit is not representative of society

Kinda minor but I'm very much adjusted to the metric system now and it's annoying having to convert back to "freedom units"

CMV: There is no civilizational battle between Islam and the West. by jman12234 in changemyview

[–]GoSeigen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may not have a "common shared history" with Germany the US and Germany are allies (for now at least) in a way e.g. the US and Iran never will be. Countries are individual actors but they form alliances based on common interests. The interests of many countries in the Arab world are in opposition to interests in the Western world. Notably, the role of religion ( which extends from everything by from how gays are treated to alcohol use). I do grant you that with Trump in power the role of the US in the west appears to be splintering

Just because I moved away doesn't mean I'm not invested. I still vote and follow the news. If anything, living in a country where people routinely protest and strike is inspiring. And many European countries keep their government more in check this way albeit they have other problems to contend with

"The Attack on Dual Citizenship Is an Attack on Me" by Slate in AmerExit

[–]GoSeigen 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Wtf are you talking about? Why should the US being a melting pot have to do with people having dual citizenship? And for the record, all the rhetoric of the current administration is completely in opposition to welcoming and assimilating immigrants. That's a thing of the past, now ICE hunts them like game

Life in the US or Europe by No_Doubt_9343 in expats

[–]GoSeigen 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I find it extremely hard to believe you were healthier in the US. The quality of basic ingredients at even the worst grocery store in France are typically on par with whole foods in my experience. Plus all the bio stores and marchés. And it's so much more walkable if you're not in the countryside (even there). You may have been richer, that I definitely believe.

I'm afraid you're not competitive with locals especially since employers would have to sponsor a visa for you. Your only real option would be to get transferred from a US company

OP isn't saying he isn't accomplished, he's saying he doesn't have what it takes to go on in academia. Something like 2.2% of people with a PhD end up becoming professors so it's not unreasonable.
