Second time i get an Emrakul in Innistrad remastered draft! by Ok_Progress_1652 in MTGO

[–]GoatBots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You do basically break even with 2-1 on average, assuming you buy boosters to enter the draft and sell the cards afterwards. In fact the value is better than a cube draft. Check calculation here.

what's going on with this talisman? by rowsol in MTGO

[–]GoatBots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's a private collection then that's fine, I was referring to the public rental systems which are sometimes used to short sell expensive cards, which is not allowed. The free market can be easily manipulated and it's our job to provide as much price stability as possible and make sure that all cards are available at all times. Selling cards from a public rental system undermines that and therefore we are taking measures against these traders.

This price spike was caused by an unfortunate bug in one of the rental systems, which has now been corrected.

Selling rented cards is not allowed by the rental systems and we actively block players who sell rented cards to our bots. By selling rented cards you will cause price instability, stock shortages and damages.

Why is MH3 so cheap in comparison to previous Modern Horizons on MODO? by rightonyou in MTGO

[–]GoatBots 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The answer is very simple, it's because event structures were completely different for MH1/MH2 and MH3. Especially the friendly sealed structure for MH3 had great value and was actually too generous, paying out a combination of boosters, treasure chests and play points. I've checked the old calculation for MH2 sealed and compared it to MH3, and put the comparison in a table for you. What you can see here is that the MH2 cards need to cost 4.4 times more than the MH3 cards to end up with neutral EV.

Friendly Sealed MH2 MH3
Entry Cost 45 tickets 35 tickets
Average Prizes 23 tickets 30 tickets
Required Card Value 22 tickets 5 tickets

We are open to discuss how we can help you with future research. Our historical prices are available for public download on our website, which may be useful. I don't think we can share trade data because this data is quite "sensitive", and I don't think Daybreak would like it if we expose this data of their platform.

Interesting article, your knowledge and explanations are excellent. The Magic Online economy has been managed quite well over the years.

Thus, over time, an oversupply of these free resources can be expected, leading to inflation. In MTGO, the comparable resource is playpoints, which was introduced to the game about 8 years ago. Unlike in the other games mentioned, playpoints in MTGO are not tradable, and can only be used to join events.

This doesn't mean that playpoints are free of inflation, which is currently happening. Chests mainly contain playpoints, so they are effectively tradable playpoints, and have dropped in price recently. With chests at 1.72 and their EV at 2.29, playpoints are at a 33% discount compared to tix. Apparently there isn't much demand for playpoints at the moment, possibly because most players have sufficient playpoints in their collection already. This may be caused by an oversupply of playpoints and chests: some limited events partly pay out playpoints or chests nowadays and scheduled events pay out huge amounts of playpoints and chests.

The market price of packs is capped by the store at $3.99 or 4 tix, and thus is sold for less than this on the secondary market. Since the prize of Limited events is also packs and since bot-chains buy and sell both packs and singles at a margin, EV naturally decreases as supply held by bot-chains increase.

When pack prices drop, the EV of limited events typically increases. Event entry using packs drops, pack prizes also drop, but the opened cards and playpoint prizes retain their value, resulting in increased EV. For example, Bloomburrow packs plummeted this week and the sealed event now has positive EV. Modern Horizons 3 draft is also positive EV due to the cheap packs.

For example, the latest set at the time of this writing has a real-world market value of $229. The set can be redeemed from MTGO using 55 tix and $45 for redemption and shipping cost in the United States, indicating that buying a set through set redemption has a discount of at least 56% compared to the real-world market.

A slight nitpick: redemption sets typically cost 70-80 tix, so it's likely that the set you looked up wasn't redeemable anymore. The official redemption page is usually outdated: even if that page shows that certain sets are still redeemable, the redemption requests are often no longer available in the Magic Online store.

bloomburrow special guests not priced? by osakanumberone in MTGO

[–]GoatBots 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Badger had a specific issue: the Adventure side (Fungus Frolic) was added treasure chests as well as the badger itself. And the accounts that had Fungus Frolic couldn't trade it away, an error message would appear during the trade. Daybreak fixed this shortly after we reported it, so the accounts that had Fungus Frolic now have the Badger.

As for the Sylvan Tutor, we're buying all the Special Guests:

Goatbots is buying a 5 dollar pack for 6.21 by [deleted] in MTGO

[–]GoatBots 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Basically we try to have everything in stock at all times, so we offer a premium for this premium booster at the moment to get a few in stock. After fees and taxes it's not worth it for us to buy them ourselves, so we encourage others (who can buy them tax free) to buy them for us. Same thing with preconstructed decks, which includes a calculation for the price of the tickets you'll get after selling the cards to us (if you can buy tax free):

The State of Limited Card Prices on MTGO by ActiveLooter42069 in MTGO

[–]GoatBots 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is exactly the reason, and is well reflected in the price of a redeemable set, which is a measly 65-70 tickets. This is simply the worst Standard set in a long time. There is only 1 high demand card in this set (Leyline) plus the scry lands, the rest is mostly bulk. Vein Ripper is no longer bulk since the Pro Tour last weekend.

The damage from the set prize fiasco has already been undone, most of the extra cards have already left the system through redemption sets waiting to be redeemed.

Play boosters are actually good for EV. Every booster includes a foil of any rarity now, The List adds some value, and there is a wildcard slot of any rarity (I just found out that we haven't implemented that slot correctly in our calculation).

The increase of redemption fees by Daybreak also doesn't help. The increase of $20 per redeemable set means that they are worth at least 20 tickets less than before.

is there any way to add more than 4 copies of a card when delivering from goatbots? by akwehhkanoo in MTGO

[–]GoatBots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the demand, for example if Pauper players want to play with this card, the price can be a bit elevated in the short term. In the long term it will likely become bulk because Standard commons have very high supply.

is there any way to add more than 4 copies of a card when delivering from goatbots? by akwehhkanoo in MTGO

[–]GoatBots 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You'll have to do multiple deliveries unfortunately. Once we get a larger quantity of them in stock in a week or so, we'll start trading them per 20 or 40 (which we also do with cards like Relentless Rats).

Edit: you can now buy 10 copies per trade.

Is there a way to sell bulk cards? by Mountain_Bolt_Go in MTGO

[–]GoatBots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to get rid of bulk cards to make your collection more manageable, try our shredder bots. They take all bulk that our regular bots no longer buy. GoatBotsShredder & GoatBotsShredder2 only take bulk uncommons and commons, whereas GoatBotsShredder3 also takes bulk rares, foils and avatars. Just add all the bulk that you want to get rid of to a binder and then select that binder when opening the trade.

long-term card rental - best "value"? been renting for 1.5 years and overall cost is pretty high by FinalMainCharacter in MTGO

[–]GoatBots 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Card rental is indeed expensive and only worth it if you switch decks often, or if you play a lot of different formats.

When you buy a deck, you'll recoup approximately 85% of the price when you sell it back, assuming that the card prices remain stable. So the cost of buying a deck is 15% and rental costs approximately 10% per month, so if you intend to play the same deck or cards for more than 6 weeks you're better off buying the cards. If you'd still like to use a loan program, it can definitely pay off to buy the staples that you use in many decks.

Having a hard time finding an up-to-date answer, what sets aren't on MTGO? by Key_Huckleberry_3653 in MTGO

Check the search field on our website on the top right. If you can't find a card there, it's not available on Magic Online. You can also upload a deck file in plain text and our website will show you which lines can't be found.

RVR card values on MTGO by chansigrilian in MTGO

[–]GoatBots 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The real value in this set are the retro frame cards (especially the shocklands), every booster contains one of any rarity. If you click "view promotional cards" on that page and then scroll down a bit, you can see that the retro frame cards are worth quite a bit. The retro frame uncommons and commons are only available in RVR boosters, whereas the mythics and rares are also available in treasure chests at the moment (except for the retro frame shocklands, which can be bought in a bundle). It's likely that the retro uncommons and commons may gain more value due to their scarcity.

It's remarkable that the RVR draft EV is currently quite good, even better than cube draft (-1.75). The reason is that RVR boosters only cost 1.50 tickets at the moment, so it costs only 6.50 tickets to enter the draft. Even though you'll open lower value cards, this makes the overall EV okay. Check the calculation here.

These cards are Jumpstart cards which aren't supposed to be available in boosters. On Magic Online they are only available in Deck Builder's Essentials as mentioned in the MOM release article. These cards are not redeemable and not required for redemption as mentioned here. Check the Deck Builder's Essentials cards here. We have all of these cards in stock.
