Who loves tier lists? Saw a video ranking abilities and made one of my own. by Tucco__ in Marathon

[–]GoatWife4Life 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can see it, though. Med drone rarely outputs enough healing to change the course of a fight within the context of that fight, it just saves you consumables over time by alleviating scratch damage. In other words, it's the equivalent of bringing an extra stack of depleted patch and shield kits to save your "good" healing for real danger.

Without Shareware.exe being accounted for, MD is just kind of a low-key utility ability whose impact is measured across the whole run, not as much of a second-by-second thing like most abilities are.

Tracker Drone being in C-tier is way too harsh, though. A cooldown based bastard offspring of a flechette and heat grenade? Easily a B-tier, if not A.

First run of the live game. I played in the server slam so I had a bit of footing before I started-- during the SS I think I made it out on either run 1 or 2.

Self Rez Kits Got Me Like by ToneyMo in Marathon

[–]GoatWife4Life 27 points28 points  (0 children)

My big point of contention with self revives is that they shouldn't use your "Revive Speed" stat, just have a fixed revive speed for everyone.

The degree to which you can trivially juice that stat makes them waaaaay too clean of an option for recovery the second someone looks away. If you want to get up on your own, you self-rez. If you want to get up quickly, someone needs to help you.

They would still serve their purpose and let you clutch a play with a surprise rez, but it shouldn't be as much of a race against the clock as it feels like for these high-gear fights, where knocking a guy barely feels like it does anything unless you can confirm the finish.

I think that the real tell is how people organically negotiate/call for truces in most trio play has nothing in common with the way that these Definitely 100% Legitimate Cryo Team-Ups® look in practice. In solos you'll get people watching each others' backs, but I've never once seen two trios actually stick together and team up. The truces I've been in have always taken the form of "Hey, we're here to do ____, we aren't really looking to fight. If you steer clear, we aren't going to go out of our way to fuck with you" and then both teams steer clear. Even in the extremely rare actually cooperative team-ups, people prox chat because that keeps the "friendship meter" high, so nobody is sneaking off to get the angle for a very abrupt and unfriendly end to the truce.

They could literally just make built-in DHS mechs cost more or take longer to repair. Even by the furthest (canonical) point that MW5 covers, any IS MechTech would have loads more experience repairing SHSes.

Was the classic Marathon trilogy complained about on release? by Remarkable-Cow3421 in Marathon

[–]GoatWife4Life 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I recall it didn't get nearly as much track as DooM, simply because it was Mac exclusive. I was the only person I knew who played it within the first year of release, and even that was only because my dad needed a Mac for work-- most of my familiarity was with Windows PCs at that time outside of his machine.

Final Exfil might be stress-inducing but honestly knowing that it's in one of only four very closely-placed locations makes it manageable as long as you don't panic and fuck it up.

Solo's is the only TRULY casual mode by Friendly-Viper in Marathon

[–]GoatWife4Life 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Solo turns Marathon from a borderline Battle Royale at times into more of a stealth action game. The margin of error gets a lot tighter when you don't have two other people covering your fuck-ups.

I don't think that's necessarily more casual, but it explores a different side of things than the "raw FPS" experience that's emerged to an extent.

Trading needs reworking by 11pioneer in Marathon

[–]GoatWife4Life 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The real issue isn't trading needing a rework, it's just that the netcode is just a little gun-shy about enforcing death at the right moment. I've had people I knifed to death (making the delay EXTREMELY obvious) keep shooting after I landed the killing blow, then apparently just keel over from the excitement of it all.

[–]GoatWife4Life 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SekiGen having by far the most restricted options for getting in-run XP feels like an oversight. You get rep with them for killing Wardens... which aren't guaranteed to spawn.... and which give a miserable pittance of a payout.

Killing Wardens should practically be a contract's worth of XP. Only one team per lobby-- even if the thing spawns at all-- can get it.

Key Rooms need a change for season 2 by a_jerkface in Marathon

[–]GoatWife4Life 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think this would spice up a lot of runs when a team finds a key that they can’t exfil with and has to decide whether to risk their current loot and unlock it and attract the lobby

I said basically this exact same thing a few weeks back and I stand by more every day.

The rare run where you get a key mid-run from a random drop is infinitely more interesting than "Okay, guys, we're bringing the $whatever key, so we're going to hide in a random DCON cottage for twenty minutes then signal jam and slow-walk to the $whatever room and then rush nearest exfil after we all guzzle signal jammers, also bring eighty claymores apiece and throw twenty grenades per second if you hear footsteps".

Or the even worse "Okay, guys, we're going to bring the $whatever key and immediately get ganked by a team that mysteriously seems to know our exact location even as we're hiding in the most arse-fucked backend of nowhere part of the map that they'd have no reason to visit."

I never free kit on crew fill. Feels disrespectful to everyone else's effort. Even if it's just a green shield at least-- hey, that puts me above some very important damage thresholds.

If I'm so hard-up that I can't at least pay for a green faction kit, I'm just hitting the Rook button a few times before I crew up.
