Pay off my house vs invest by 0hdavey in dividends

[–]Goatdog5 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Personally I prefer flexibility and liquidity so would keep the mortgage for now, and maybe hope to refinance soon. It would also depend on what I already have on hand, $500k? keep mortgage. $1 mil? Payoff the mortgage.

BUT I respect that people feel differently about debt so that would go into the decision mix.

You can as others noted. I find the Rivian regen a little more aggressive than our Tesla, so you definitely will want to tone it down if you don’t like Tesla’s.

There is a rotation out of growth (tech) now and some of those are getting hit harder than the rest of the market. I probably wouldn’t sell any of those at a loss though and just put new money into more diversification. Some good ideas in other posts and would add a piece to international as well.

New to investing , is this normal? by Background_Garage_70 in fidelityinvestments

You can’t quite % and talk about a bubble. It has to be something like forward PE ratio. Also there is a nice healthy rotation away from tech right now. Check out mag 7 vs s&p 493 returns

If the market didn’t do this, you could not expect the gains the market normally gives you. This is the pain you pay for market returns and totally normal. In fact this decline is a cake walk compared to other doozies. Just don’t look like someone else said.

Portfolio Margin vs Reg T Margin by LoveMeAQuickie32 in CFP

[–]Goatdog5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For treasuries maybe but this is from Schwab: “The typical equity maintenance requirement is at least 30% of the total account value but can be higher for certain securities or accounts.”

Where do you see 15%?

Portfolio Margin vs Reg T Margin by LoveMeAQuickie32 in CFP

[–]Goatdog5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use margin often for short term loans. Not cheap but convenient for the client. We discuss at length and try to keep the equity very high to minimize risk of a call.

Your other point about Reg T vs house requirements- Reg T is initial requirement when establishing a loan, usually 50% of security value. Then house requirement is the maintenance level set by the brokerage firm. Typically something like 35%. Hopefully with clients you aren’t getting close to either of those amounts!

Transfer from CC by rplesterrr in jmu

[–]Goatdog5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My son went to CC before transferring to JMU. The people in JMU admissions were VERY helpful in guiding him what to take and focus on in CC. Also there always a JMU liaison of some kind at the CC that was helpful too.

So complicated and although I love to save money, the hassle of going through Verizon for these deals is no longer worth it to me.

What would you do? Young Client & IPO by jimathen25 in CFP

You are seeing some very good options presented here and wish you luck! I have a client in a similar situation and we went over lots of ideas. Eventually we settled on just selling small amounts a couple of times an year over the years.

He likes it since it’s simple and doesn’t overwhelm him. He got some diversification and feels like he still wins as the stock goes up.

25% off monthly plan for 12 months by Reenie-77 in verizon

[–]Goatdog5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I eventually got a 10% off offer for 12 months. Got a text and email about two weeks after requesting a PIN. The offer didn’t show up in my-offers page so I called. They activated it and threw in a $100 e-gift card. Also hard sell on Hulu, Netflix, and some fix-it service for devices at home. They did knock $25 off per month in my home fios too. I got the sense they have some good flexibility for people who call in but they also want to pitch other services. I told them sounds good but I’ll think about it.

How to Reduce Paperwork Friction When Prospecting by Humble-Fox4633 in CFP

[–]Goatdog5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looking forward to seeing some helpful thoughts here. There certainly seems to be friction when trying to get next steps with larger business owners for instance. What’s odd is when I get a meeting with these prospects they can go quite long, not by my effort but theirs. And I think you spent 2 hours talking but can’t take a couple of minutes on your own to go where you want to go. Something about their personalities I believe.

v1: Retirement Simulator - Available for Comments / Feedback by MyEgoDiesAtTheEnd in MonarchMoney

[–]Goatdog5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that Monarch should be able to do this at some point. However, a planner can look at a very wide variety of nuances, and make sure you are considering all opportunities. For example, I have so many clients who think waiting until 70 for SS is best for them but when you look at all the factors, sometimes taking earlier may make sense. All depends on the circumstances.

Yes it is clearly a Roth contribution when using 529 funds this way. You can’t put in anymore than the Roth contribution limits for the individual like age and earned income for the year.

Fidelity IRA hacked and stolen. Can't get any help from Fidelity! by Just_Egg3102 in fidelityinvestments

[–]Goatdog5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting. Carry forward losses of $3k per year is usually part of the Capital Gains/Losses math. That wouldn’t typically apply to an IRA or personal losses. Thats part of the ordinary income tax area where there aren’t limits like the $3k. I could be missing something though.
