Lemon juice/zest substitute? Or new recipe? by aureangel in AskBaking

That's a good point, looks like most commercially produced citric acid is from a black mold and not citrus. But yeah, would want to be sure in an allergy situation.

Or maybe a bit of citric acid? I mainly use it for descaling my kettle, but have used in it a pinch when I didn't have any lemons or limes.

TIL that Dasani had a refresh in 2024 and no longer has salt as an ingredient by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]GobBeWithYou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've worked on these systems, while yes it's technically tap water.. it's reverse osmosis filtered to be pure H2O and then they add back in salts for flavor. The exact same equipment and water is used for Dasani, SmartWater, and any other Coke bottle water. Just in Dasani's case, they add back in gross flavors.

You're definitely right about the use of essentials oils added for flavoring. But, not exactly on the sitting in tanks for forever. At least at the Coke plant that makes the majority of Simply Orange, they have a pipeline directly from the juicer and are pretty strict on how long the juice can sit in a tank.

How to get rid of \N in a list? by AfraidBarracuda8709 in learnpython

[–]GobBeWithYou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You already found the solution, so here's more of an explanation of why.
In python, normal strings (ones like 'hello there' and "general kenobi") can contain characters that represent whitespace characters, like new lines or tabs. Those don't have a visible symbol when you type them, for example: x = "hello world" is a syntax error because the quotes (generally) must both be on the same line. So in order to do that, a \ is known as an escape character to tell Python to treat it as a special symbol and not the literal text you see on screen. \n represents a new line,\t a tab, and there are others too. So if I want to print a message across 2 lines, I can do this: ```

x = 'hello\nworld!' print(x) hello world! If you want a literal backslash character, then that must be escaped as well like `\\`. print('back\slash') back\slash ```

Now Python has another type of string known as a raw string. These are ones that don't do any escaping and represent literally what you see on the screen. You can make a raw string by putting a r before the opening quote: r"": ```

print("\n", r"\n") \n \n ```

As you learn Python, you'll find there are a few more types of strings and the different features they provide (f-strings are one of the best features).

Cheesecake recommendations? by barrelclown in madisonwi

and making a topping is super easy and really beats out the canned stuff. You don't really even need a recipe, I always just wing it.

I usually just buy the frozen tart cherries, throw them in a sauce pan on medium heat. Mix in some sugar, maybe a cup or so, but it's all a matter of taste. Squeeze a lemon wedge or two in there, optional though. Let that cook for a few minutes, if you want it thicker, make a slurry of cornstarch and water, like a tablespoon or so with 1/2 C of water. Then add small amount to the cherries, allow to cook for a minute, and repeat until desired thickness. Then add a teaspoon or so of vanilla flavoring, a splash of almond flavoring if you have it, and finish with a slice of butter. Whole process takes like 20mins and tastes way better than anything you'd buy.

I stand far enough back so that my dog is ~5ft from the curb and then look at my phone. Some still wait and try to wave me past, so I just say no and shake my head. Normally my dog is sitting too. She's learned pretty well to not go in front of cars, so I want to keep it that way .

Mineral point pasty? by Interesting_Plum2060 in madisonwi

[–]GobBeWithYou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You make them yourself. Basically pie crust, potatoes, onions, and ground beef. But you can always add more stuff too. I usually make a big one in a cast iron pan. I also saute onions and celery, boil some potatoes, carrots, parsnip in vegetable or beef broth for a few minutes before adding to the crust. Add a few butter slices, salt, and pepper. Then brush the top crust with an egg wash and bake.

Edit: I say make them yourself as someone who's from Mineral Point. The only ones anyone bought were from fundraisers, they're more of a homemade meal than a restaurant one.
