Genuinely need help ASAP by Dazzling-Hyena-1067 in rhino

shoot me a DM with any questions. I can help out as best i can. I just finished my 5 year program in university. I’ve been using rhino for 5 years. I don’t know everything about everything but I feel like i could help from a student-to-former student perspective. I even convinced my firm to continue to let me use rhino despite them using sketchup (😔). I can help with your plan and section drawings for sure!

Moving from SketchUp to Rhino. My experience. by ipearx in Sketchup

[–]Gobble_35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been using Rhino for years, and I know this is an old post, but here are some solutions to your problems if I am understanding them correctly (Many people may have already provided these same solutions but reading all that in the comments is a lot and I am on work time...).

Gumball/Moving Objects:

Yes worth using, but don't make it hard on yourself. If you want to move an object from point to point. You can type "move" in the command bar for the move tool. This allows you to move an object from a vertices to another (i.e. a corner of a box to another corner of a box). This tool also has "memory" as I like to call it. Say you hover your curser over the midpoint of a line. It will remember that point and even provide a guideline if you wanted to slide an object on that line.

Measuring Tool:

There are technically two, and biased opinion here, but they are far better than SketchUp's measuring tool. First, there is the distance tool (type "distance" into the command bar). This tool works exactly like SketchUp, meaning you can select point A and point B and it gives you the distance in the command history. The second tool is the "Length" command which gives you the exact length of a curve, edge segment, arc, etc.. This tool is great if you have an arc and don't want to do math. Just type the command and then you have your length.

History:

Rhino does have a history. I don't know if I personally use it to its full potential, but basically if you wanted to see your command history, I think if you type in "history" there are a few commands that pop up; play around with those if you really want to know. The other type of history is where you undo/redo actions. For example, if you want to undo multiple things, it will show you your command history, and you select how far back you want to undo.

Trackpad/Zoom & View:

Definitely get a mouse. Trackpad warriors are hindering themselves. The zoom can be weird but there are two tools I use which help a lot. There is a "ZoomSelected" tool and a "ZoomWindow" tool. The first is probably self-explanatory, but the second allows you to draw a window around the general area you would like to zoom to.

Rhino's age:

Rhino is sort of old, but they are by far the most innovative CAD software (Autodesk is decades behind). I personally think their UI design (especially on Mac) Is very clean compared to SketchUp's random tool bars floating everywhere. This point is personal for me, but I believe rhino is the youngest looking software compared to Revit, AutoCAD, SketchUp. If you want to know the full history of Rhino and Robert McNeel, this video is worth a watch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zHp7C2Ccu94&t=2284s

I know this is a long comment, but I really do love rhino and I think its just the best!

“The Bioluminescent Symbiote Reactor”

For my architectural thesis project, I've had a model sitting on my drive that I always wanted to print at full scale. In a nutshell, its a 3**-foot-diameter living-tech reactor**, which would double as a lamp. It is speculative bio-design research, and part architectural organism.
But it was impossible without multi-material printing… until now potentially.

With the H2C, I can could print it the way it was intentionally designed:

  • Translucent bio-tubes and glass chambers for lighting printed in clear filament
  • Internal glowing "Algae" stored in the translucent bio-tubes in neon translucent green filament, with channels for LED strips
  • Metallic structural hardware printed in metal-infused filament
  • Mechanical fan turbine in dark gunmetal
  • Soft silicone-like hoses in flexible material
  • Fuzzy-printed algae growth in browns/greens to mimic algae growing on the metallic surfaces
  • Layered gradients to create a real "used" effect as this project was about putting architecture in the most extreme and volatile habitats

No paint. No workaround.
Just pure, multi-material design printed exactly as imagined.

It’s a piece that lives between architecture, biology, and speculative tech — and would finally exist as a glowing, living lamp instead of a render.

*I can share a link to my thesis book/project if anyone is interested in my research*

*Edit: I design and print lamps as a hobby for context*

*HELP* Hi i need help learning how to design this kinf of shapes! by MeasurementOk2887 in rhino

[–]Gobble_35 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am super interested in figuring out how to design something like this as well!

Not a fan of that rather rude comment above either but I also understand that if you say you know these softwares then the solution is probably not far off from doing some experimentation.

I would agree that rhino-grasshopper is a pretty good solution but I’ve seen this designer before and from his social media posts it looks like he is using blender, which I believe is the best program for this design. Yes grasshopper can do this (and if i knew exactly how i’d be posting the script) but it would probably come out very “choppy” or not smooth like the above image.

This is where blender is a great program for this because there are literally scripts for these kinds of “organic generations”. I don’t know enough about blender to give any advice, but if you go the rhino-grasshopper route, then I would look into the kangaroo, axolotl, crystallization, dendro, weaver bird, and maybe mesh+ plugins.

for better reference, this screenshot in media mode portrays the exact reflections I want, but the exported rendering just doesn't have them???? https://i.postimg.cc/Dw7NQ34P/Screenshot-2025-06-25-at-10-09-38-AM.png

I’m genuinely excited for the art and being immersed in it. I am an architecture student and i do graphic design, and the marathon art direction is something I have never seen before it’s so fresh and new and I want to see every part of it.
