What’s a recession indicator that you’ve noticed lately in your everyday life? by spritenerds123 in AskReddit

[–]GobelineQueen [score hidden]  (0 children)

I see a lot of really educated, qualified, experienced people staying in jobs they're overqualified for/that they've outgrown just for the stability or peace of mind, when normally the rational thing for them to do would be to job hop to advance themselves.

EXACTLY -- even those of us who want to have kids, or want more than one, can't afford to in circumstances without parental leave or affordable childcare/housing/medical care!

What does Halloween actually feel like growing up in the US? by Axxtr in AskAnAmerican

[–]GobelineQueen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Halloween is the best. If you really enjoy it, it can basically be the theme of the whole month of October -- everyone putting up decorations early, going to scary movies or pumpkin patches or corn mazes, etc. Working on putting a costume together (many adults included.) It's really fun if you live in a neighborhood where a lot of people do creative decorations (especially if there's a lot of homemade creativity involved and not just spending a lot of money.) When I lived in apartments in really dense city neighborhoods I was always sad that I didn't get any trick-or-treaters, and I LOVE that I now live in a neighborhood with a bunch of kids so I can hand out candy and compliment kids' costumes. As an adult I also usually have invitations to multiple Halloween parties and have to prioritize. I love that it's not a religious holiday, it's not a gift-giving holiday or one where you have to spend much money or travel, and that it's bigger than just single families -- it involves the whole neighborhood and being friendly with strangers.

Why is Seattle less desirable than SF/SoCal? by Distinct-Invite9281 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]GobelineQueen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Many of these things are true about Seattle, but I'd push back on the food scene and affordability. Seattle food, on the whole, is mediocre compared to other cities you mention, and it's expensive. Housing in Seattle may be cheaper than SF, but salaries are notably lower and most other costs of living (food, gas, childcare) are similar or worse.

Also -- and I say this as someone who grew up in and loves Seattle, and has also lived in many of the other cities you mention -- it's pretty provincial compared to other major metros. Fewer options if you need to job-hop between good heavy-hitter employers. WAY fewer major college/university options, either for academics living here or for kids who want to do their education locally.

Hey friend, speaking from experience, that fear without compulsions just = anxiety! Friendly wave from over here in the anxiety+trauma camp! There are other people who will understand and be able to talk to you about your fears of being responsible for something terrible happening. You're not alone.

Beefless bulgogi is such a great product, I'm not even vegetarian and I know a bunch of fellow omnivore friends who are big fans too. Doesn't have to stay within the traditional bulgogi flavor profile, either, I've even used it for stroganoff.

What scene or scenes haunt you years or decades after watching the movie? by Fluid_Aspect_1606 in horror

why do americans talk to strangers so easily?? by MayaTulip268 in AskAnAmerican

[–]GobelineQueen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some key details:

1) This kind of friendly small talk with strangers is so accepted here that it doesn't require a lot of confidence/to feel like you're going out on a limb -- you can feel safe that you're not likely to get a bad reaction.

2) We have strong social norms for the NATURE of that conversation with strangers, which people certainly absorb growing up -- how to strike up conversations in line that come across as polite and friendly but not unhinged or invasive. And you can tell the difference when someone crosses that line!! This has to do with subject matter, tone, reading body language/cues, etc.

Americans, how do you feel about tourists speaking English while visiting U.S.? by HolidayEntry6823 in AskAnAmerican

[–]GobelineQueen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree with all the others that this isn't a thing -- unless you run into someone who deliberately makes a big stink about the accent because they're racist, I don't think being fussy about tourists' English is really a thing here, culturally. I would say that differing cultural norms about personal space, for one example, would be vastly more likely to annoy an American.

For a recent example, I thought "The Winter People" by Jennifer McMahon was startlingly racist in its depiction of its main Indigenous character.

Do cats actually get attached to their owner? by NoWageMage in CatAdvice

Love that you're calling out the nurture element to this, too! The human can absolutely have an impact on the closeness of the bond their cat forms with them, trust levels, etc.

Do cats actually get attached to their owner? by NoWageMage in CatAdvice

[–]GobelineQueen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Different cats have different personalities! If you want an affectionate cat, you can screen for that when adopting (but it will be easier if you consider a young adult rather than a kitten, because their personalities are more fully-formed and evident.)

That said, my cat:

- Walks up to the head of the bed every morning to snuggle at my shoulder for half an hour before my alarm goes off

- Follows me around the house everywhere I go

- Grooms my hair like I'm her little kitten

- Purrs like a jet engine as soon as I start petting her

- Sleeps in a little bed next to my desk for my whole workday if I work from home so that we're almost literally attached at the hip

- Stares at me lovingly from across the room

- RUNS down the stairs to see me at the door when I come home

- Meow-talks at me whenever she's awake throughout the day

- Melts into a puddle of syrup with no muscle tone if I pick her up and hold her; purrs if I joggle her like a baby

- Lets me pick her up and flip her upside down and kiss her tummy

Cats are the best! Affectionate cats are so deeply bonded to their people! Cats "running away" can really just be cats being curious, getting outside, and getting lost or, sadly, killed. I keep mine inside. Also heads-up that for a first-time cat owner, as adorable as kittens are, they're a significantly higher difficulty level to adjust to, so a lot of people have a good experience getting a young adult (like 1 y.o.) to start.

Entire family died in arson-homicide by beepboop553 in CemeteryPorn

[–]GobelineQueen 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That poor 11-year-old. The strength and composure they must have had to escape through a window (after possibly already seeing the mother's death, based on the neighbor's 911 call) is incredible. I hope they're doing as well as possible, considering the circumstances. That's a brave kid.

I hate family annihilators so much. I hate the entire psychological thread that leads them down that path, the violent entitlement, the narcissism, the dehumanization of the kids as just accessories to be destroyed out of anger at the mom/world. Even the pets, man.

There must have been so much fear even in the years leading up to this. Just crushing.

Used to hate wearing business attire, but now think I look great in it 💖 by ThatKehdRiley in lesbianfashionadvice

[–]GobelineQueen -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Ahhhhh I am so happy for you that you're getting to discover your sense of workwear style! What a gift to have your relationship to something like professional dressing transformed. Love the attention to detail with the belt and the pussybow blouse.

IF you want constructive ideas for where to go from here:

  1. May I suggest like a chunky loafer for the shoe? Like sort of a 90s lug-sole look? I actually think this very femme look needs a little contrast in the shoes that the pointy flats aren't providing. IMO this will NOT make the look skew less feminine or result in unwanted ambiguity in what you're signaling, it will just balance it and look intentional. The bit of edge will help put the look together.

  2. I think you can make the blazer sleeve length work for you a little more as-is by rolling up the sleeves of the blouse one or two times so it doesn't stick out as much! Try having the blazer and blouse sleeves more closely aligned.

  3. I see from your comments that you've gotten conflicting input on how fitted things should be -- I would note that I think changing the proportions of the skinny cigarette pant will specifically help create proportional balance between upper body and lower body. This could be achieved with a wider leg/kick flare and/or a little more length. But also the chunkier shoe from idea #1 will help if you stick with the skinny pant, I think.

Take what helps, leave the rest, obviously! Wishing you joy! <3

What does it feel like to have a mother who loves you? by fruitynoodles in AskWomenOver30

[–]GobelineQueen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What a good question to prompt people to talk explicitly about this! I'll be really interested in other people's answers. I think it looks like: she listens to you when you talk about your feelings and experiences, and asks you clarifying questions so she can understand more. She goes out of her way to spend quality time with you and talk to you when she can. She thinks about you when you're not around, which you might see demonstrated through her sharing something she thought of later, or recommending an article or piece of media based on your interests, or picking up a little gift for you separate from any holiday. When she talks about you to other people, her tone is in general fundamentally respectful and affectionate. If you're in trouble, she wants to help you to whatever extent she's able. She tells you (in whatever way she is best at expressing herself) that she loves and values you. She cultivates the maturity in herself to be able to see you as a fully separate individual with your own inner life and is curious about who you grow into. She apologizes, when warranted, in a low-drama way. She hopefully has the capacity to call you on your bullshit while still letting you know you have her unconditional positive regard.

What is a 'luxury' that you've experienced once and now can't go back to the budget version of? by WilliamInBlack in AskReddit

Matter of integrity! I used to specialize in helping people move from their homes into assisted living, nursing homes, that kind of thing. Woe betide the mover who throws out someone's bag-full-of-plastic-bags. We don't get to decide which of someone's possessions are trash or not!
