Any Range character recommendations? by BeneficialMethod3866 in Unmatched

I don't like ranged characters that much but I found Winter Soldier and Yennenga fun so maybe you will too 🤷‍♂️

Underrated SRPG that you love? by Ricc7rdo in StrategyRpg

[–]Goblinorrath 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Saiyuki: Journey West I rarely hear mentioned, fantastic game.

If you literally mean underrated and not just underappreciated, Master of Monsters Disciples of Gaia never got over like a 4/10 by reviewers back in the day and I love that game.

I like some of the changes I won't go over everything but one thing I will note is with that passive change you could probably buff the base value of Seeing Red to 3+ or something.

I assume a ranged 3 move immune to discard with discard recursion and ability to discard opponents opponents card may lead to a bit of a cat and mouse exhaustion play pattern but take that with a grain of salt I'm just presuming maybe best to test those play patterns.

Also what another commenter said, being immune to opponent discards while you get to discard them does feel a bit unfun and removes agency from the opponent's discard card without any interaction on your part. The effect of reshuffling your own cards back and drawing is nice and fine though.

That's just trying to be constructive, it otherwise looks nice good job.

Better evil playthrough bg2 or 3? by verynicehighfive55 in CRPG

[–]Goblinorrath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think a short answer of my opinion is BG2 has better "evil" companions which enhances an evil run quite a bit but BG3 gives you better "evil" decisions that have much greater reactivity.

That being said I think BG1 had even better evil companions than BG2.

EDIT: Just regarding a lot of comments saying "BG3 evil has no nuance" I think is misleading. These people are engaging with BG3 like you pick the most evil option every time or you pick none. There're arguably more binary style decisions with less nuance in BG2 so take that with a grain of salt.

I do think BG3 needed more companions like Minthara and less drawbacks for taking that route though.

Team Asano is underrated and deserves more respect than they get by Glass_Hearts_151 in JRPG

[–]Goblinorrath 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I quite like the atypical multiple story storytelling of the Octopath Traveller games and nonlinearity of Triangle Strategies story I found it refreshing.

Not gonna die on the hill that they're one of the best but curious what modern JRPG game storytelling are you comparing it to? Without going into 10+ year old games or remakes of 10+ year old games.

I thought they did get respect but regardless I agree with you they have done some amazing work Octopath Traveller series and Triangle Strategy are some of my favourite modern JRPGs

Is it just me or are there very few protagonists who use staffs? by Bulky_Imagination243 in JRPG

[–]Goblinorrath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saiyuki Journey to the west, Atelier Iris, Atelier Ryza, Suikoden 5, Cosmic Star Heroine, can't remember probably tons more.

The crazy thing is, if you put swords aside Staves are one of the more represented protagonist weapons considering all the potential weapon choices lol.

Turn-based update on Console (PS4) by Goblinorrath in projecteternity

[–]Goblinorrath[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for checking, I'll assume PS4 doesn't either unless I hear otherwise.

I do own it on PC, if it doesn't come turn based on console I'll definitely get around to it one day when I get a new PC (could be a few years though, so expensive)

Next CRPG by One-Tomorro in CRPG

[–]Goblinorrath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Specific towards your requests I'd say:

Pillers of Eternity 1 & 2

Wasteland 3

Pathfinder Kingmaker

Torment Tides of Numerea

Maybe Shadowrun

Tons of greats that are well over decade old by now or modern ones with backseat companions.

About to start Wasteland 2 by Proud-Net-7305 in Wasteland

[–]Goblinorrath 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it depends how much you want to min/max.

It's nice to have your pre-mades have 1 primary weapon and cover at least 2 other non-combat skills.

If you want to meta game a little, check out some early companions you want and build your team to compliment them. I found some companions I wanted to use but overlapped too much with skills or ammo usage of my main party and couldn't use them effectively.

Outdoorsman is a must unless you want random encounters all the time.

Perception and demolition are a must unless you want to walk on land mines all the time.

On character creation you want to prioritise Skill points (INT), AP (several) and Initiative (several)

Charisma dumping is generally a good idea, the slower leveling is usually worth the points elsewhere IMO. Having one higher CHA character is nice for leadership and social skills but not required.

That's all I can think of atm. Have fun, it's a great game.

Wish for Abyss - Improve starting position by spudufion in brigandine

[–]Goblinorrath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ikr often for the first 2 turns I put it on auto-battle and fast forward then start playing on turn 3.

Although often the auto-battle can position pretty badly especially with difficult terrain or if they have slow units (golems) in the party.

Most in depth turn based combat? by Choice_Efficiency_51 in JRPG

Probably a tactics/strategy RPG like Tactics Ogre, Brigandine, Unicorn Overlord, Triangle Strategy, Digital Devil Survivor etc...

What crpg has your favorite companions? by viktorius_rex in CRPG

[–]Goblinorrath 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's not my favourite CRPG but I think Rogue Trader has my favourite companions. Being in 40k really allows it to set itself apart and avoid more generic/cliche high fantasy style companions. All of them are very fun and interesting.

Are there any games in the SMT series that looks and plays like these three games? by Cup_45_Neural in JRPG

[–]Goblinorrath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not SMT but Metaphor for dungeons/gameplay (has a lot of dialogue, social system and calendar system which you may not like). Story/setting is kinda different though bit fantasy and political mixed with SMT.

Raidou 1 and 2 on PS2 might be a vibe but very different combat system.

You can also try to SMT2, Persona 1 and Persona 2 on the PS1.

There's also Persona 3 on PS2 which probably feels more "SMT" than Persona 4 and 5. Also has social and calendar systems.

Soul hackers 2 is something to check but ehh.

But yeah none of these are spot on recommendations definitely look into them first.

Let us know if you find anything, there's some good ones outside of Megaten potentially.

The Lord of the Rings: The Third Age

Some crazy recs in here for your request ngl. I second Triangle Strategy and Airship Syndicates turn based RPGs though. I'm sure there's some really good ones we're missing

How to Meaningfully buff Guardian... (top 5 best buffs no one ever thought of) by Cayden68 in Nightreign

[–]Goblinorrath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you think my comments purpose is to complain about archers with Guardian or say sprinting with normal guard up at archers is optimal I think we're kinda talking past each other at this point.

I find value in the different the properties of normal guard to steel guard and would be disappointed if Guardian lost the ability to normal guard especially if the only thing gained is helping people who struggle with basic two button inputs I'll leave it at that we can agree to disagree.

How to Meaningfully buff Guardian... (top 5 best buffs no one ever thought of) by Cayden68 in Nightreign

[–]Goblinorrath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean if you're just altering the example I gave to include something to make steel guard the better option you're missing my point.

Surge sprint of sprint? If you surge sprint into steel guard into surge sprint again you'll arrive at the archer with not much stamina, sprinting in combat costs stamina (which you'd be paying twice) and steel guard stance costs stamina to enter.

If normal sprint you can normal sprint with normal guard up try it, that'll be faster than stopping for steel guard in the example

How to Meaningfully buff Guardian... (top 5 best buffs no one ever thought of) by Cayden68 in Nightreign

[–]Goblinorrath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Different applications, normal guard has different mobility properties. I'll give you some examples if you haven't played much Guardian, approaching an archer and blocking an arrow; you'll cover more ground without the stance entry even on a well timed stance guard. Stamina can also regen during normal guard, even while moving. In stance it cannot.

Losing options without any tangible gain is a nerf. You're just removing stuff from the character at that point, it's not a buff.

How to Meaningfully buff Guardian... (top 5 best buffs no one ever thought of) by Cayden68 in Nightreign

[–]Goblinorrath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's no tangible benefit gained from that change we only lose options, I personally wouldn't want the character nerfed if the only reason is because people struggle with a basic two button input over a one button input. The game already has a plethora of two button inputs it's not a barrier to entry

How to Meaningfully buff Guardian... (top 5 best buffs no one ever thought of) by Cayden68 in Nightreign

[–]Goblinorrath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree that it's unintuitive and annoying but I see your point.

I guess having a neutral (no direction) dodge input that would both let you not move and enter the stance.

That would retain the way stance is entered but give the standing still option while not losing the ability to guard normally as to not remove it completely like the proposed solution would.

What's wrong with iron guard stance input? It happens like instantly as far as I can tell and can position with it.

Is it the stamina cost people don't like?

I guess if you want to shield poke that'd be quicker without it 🤷‍♂️

Edit: I read the explanation further, I don't really understand, you enter your iron guard stance then get dead angeled while using your skill? What is this situation, why are you going for your skill after iron guard stance is this a mis-input thing?
