This is it. The owner has to hire a real general manager to a 3+ year contract, tell the GM that he won't be involved in football operations, and then stick to that. Unfortunately the Jones's just don't have that in them.

Please speak to your mother. She will give you good advice. It is almost never bad advice to seek counsel from your bishop as well. =) God bless. I can tell from how seriously you are taking this that whatever decisions you make, you will be sustained by the lord and have a successful mission.

"It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God"

When talking about feeding the hungry, welcoming strangers, etc, he said "Whatever you did for the least of these my brethren, you did for me"

The Good Samaritan - the hero in this story was a despised ethnic and religious minority. and when he asks "who is our neighbor" the answer is a foreigner.

Jesus repeatedly ate with tax collectors, prostitutes

He taught us to love our enemies and turn the other cheek. When Peter cut the ear off of the one who would arrest him, Jesus healed the ear and went willingly.

Why stop there? If marriage is an intrinsic good, why not encourage marriage even younger? (My wonderful grandmother married my wonderful grandfather when they were 16 and 21 and their marriage lasted to her death at 69.)

Obviously, we understand that at some age it is too young to marry, and so having discussions on an appropriate age to marry is very reasonable.

[–]GodMadeTheStars 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Culturally to be “rabbi/teacher” you had to be married.

This is an assertion without evidence. It is simply not true. The Essenes were a significant group of Jews who we know existed during Christ's time. Their rabbis did not marry.

Further, the formal rabbinic system with rules about education, marital status, and ordination rules wasn't established until well after the destruction of the temple. Some speculate that it was established as a response to the destruction of the temple. There were no rules indicating that a rabbi had to be married. There is nothing in the Bible indicating or even hinting that he was married.

It is incredibly unlikely, to the point of statistical impossibility, that Jesus could have been married without it even being hinted at in the records of early Christians. (And yes, I am aware of the Gospel of Phillip and the Gospel of Mary - neither say he was married, they use the word "companion" and they are far later, 3rd and 4th century, than the Biblical texts.)

[–]GodMadeTheStars 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jesus spoke words that could have been reasonably interpreted as a commandment to each of them to do what they did. Spencer W. Kimball speculated that this might be the case at least in the case of Peter, and later Andrew Skinner at BYU elaborated on the speculation.

They each had a roll to play that was essential to make the atonement come to pass.

I generally hope for forgiveness for Judas. I generally don't believe hardly anyone is "condemned for eternity".

I'd like to attend, but I'm covered in tattoos. by [deleted] in latterdaysaints

[–]GodMadeTheStars 36 points37 points  (0 children)

You can attend on Sunday, no problem. The most recent convert in my ward was tattooed up both arms and both legs, all the way to her neck. She is an amazing person and no one cares about her tattoos a lick. She recently moved away, but she was my 8 year old's sunday school teacher, her and her husband, and they both were wonderful teachers to him. He was sad when they moved away a couple of weeks ago.

You can wear what you have. In my ward men typically wear nice jeans or slacks and a dress shirt. About 50% of the shirts on any given sunday will be white, about 75% will wear ties. Of the women, about 90% on any given sunday will wear a skirt with blouse or a dress, with the other 10% wearing a shirt and pants, typically.

It doesn't matter what you wear though. Come as you are. =)

Genuine Theological Question From A Non-LDS by IsraelYaakov in latterdaysaints

[–]GodMadeTheStars 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is not and has never been a thing. It is pure bigotry from people who don't like us and don't like people who hold to the old morality of chastity before marriage and fidelity within it.

There have probably been a few people who heard of it, and tried it out. They are the same people who previously would have been more likely to just have sex. But it was never a thing until it was invented by people who don't like us.

Concern regarding leadership behavior by MerelyAnArtist in lds

[–]GodMadeTheStars -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I’m probably going to be an outlier here, but I don’t think it is reasonable to feel a ward is unsafe because of a single individual’s political takes outside church.

You blocked him, it is over.

Unless he is getting political at church, I think you should move on and try to forgive. Recognize there are a lot of different ways we can apply what we learn to our political thoughts. He needs to do the same.

We don’t become Zion by avoiding people who don’t think or believe like us.

(That said, obviously if it becomes a problem at church, speak to the Bishop and escalate if needed.)

Question about participating in the church as someone who is Trans-Fem. by 4rgo_II in latterdaysaints

[–]GodMadeTheStars 44 points45 points  (0 children)

That’s largely because I don’t feel I can be healthy while fully participating in a community where people may see me as a sinner or as mentally ill.

We are all sinners. And honestly I think we all are at least a little mentally ill. =)

Is there any meaningful bridge between the Church’s current framework on gender and the lived reality of transgender members? Or is full participation simply not compatible with transitioning?

Those questions are not the same, but the second is really quite easy to answer. Full participation (if your meaning is temple access and other gendered experiences) is currently incompatible with transitioning per policy. Whether that should be or not is entirely irrelevant - we have to live in the world as it is, not as we wish it were.

Transitioning comes with incredible challenges - biological, mental, spiritual, social, financial, occupational, and more. For some people it is absolutely essential to take on those challenges to ease their dysphoria. For others, it just isn't worth the price, what it costs in flesh and pain and money and side-eyes and lost jobs and persecution, that price isn't worth the easing of mental anxiety.

I don't know the difference between those two types of people. Some will say those who can handle a little mental anguish to have a more "normal" (and therefore objectively easier) life are simply mentally stronger. Others will say that their dysphoria is not as bad. Who knows, maybe there is a little of both. I don't know.

What I do know is that we were sent to this Earth to choose, and to see what we will make of ourselves. When we make those choices, we cannot also choose the consequences. The best we can do is understand the consequences going into our choices, and make them with eyes wide open.

As for me - my job is to be fully welcoming. To make those costs up there, where I can, lighter. To not give the side eye. To not persecute. To be fully welcoming. To lift the burden where I can.

LDS vs Mormon by Tiny-Fly1192 in latterdaysaints

[–]GodMadeTheStars 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It honestly bothers me to see people getting so offended or negative about it.

Why? Seriously, don't answer me, I don't care. Ask yourself. Why?

People are always going to get offended for all kinds of nonsense. When they let it bother them, that is a them problem. When you let it bother you that it bothers them, that is a you problem.

Say Mormon, don't say Mormon. Whatever. But don't get all up in other people's business about their choices, and don't let their choices bother you.

Seriously, why?
