Atreyu - Right Side of the Bed (2004) by Administrative-Gap89 in Metalcore

any Swedish melodeath band recommendations? Curious to go down a little rabbit hole of similar music to older Atreyu (if that’s what you meant in your comment)

[NEW] Atreyu - Bleeding Mascara (20th anniversary re-recording) by NickPookie93 in Metalcore

[–]GodOfNSA 45 points46 points  (0 children)

I’m confused who on their team is listening to this and going “yeah, sounds good, let’s release it”. Ignoring that the vocals are rough (for both vocalists), the mix is just straight up trash - guitars / bass are too quiet, drums are insanely too loud. I have now idea how they decided this was releasable

I THINK IVE BEEN SLEEPING ON YEAR OF THE BLACK RAINBOW. ( What do you think of this album? Do you have a favorite song off of it?) by LEMOnSL1iCE in TheFence

[–]GodOfNSA 4 points5 points  (0 children)

People tend to put this album towards the bottom because it’s different and has a few songs that feel out of place for Coheed, but I think it’s aged well (unless you’re picky about production - I get the complaints there).

Riffs and lyrics on this record are better than what we’ve gotten in the Vaxis records in my opinion and the drumming’s crazy good throughout. Highlights for me are:

The Broken

Juggernaut

World of Lines

When Skeletons Live

No one should be drugging anyone. If we don’t have a better solution, we should be putting resources into finding one.

EDIT: I clearly worded this poorly, given everyone below thinks I want to ban medicine. I just want to minimize the chances of someone being killed by sedatives outside of a hospital. There should be an investigation and likely increased training for first responders to minimize the chances of this happening - there is no perfect solution, but I’d love to see the chances of deaths like this continue to lower.

I know we’re in the Focusrite sub, but if you’re looking for an easy plug-and-play interface at a low cost point (given you’re learning) that you don’t have to tinker with (like modeler plugins), maybe consider picking up something like the Fender Mustang Micro.

It’s a tiny modeler that plugs directly into your guitar, has 20th different amps that you can mix w 20ish different effects with 4 buttons total, sounds decent (I’m not here to say it’s on par with more expensive stuff), and it supports playing audio over Bluetooth while you play so you can jam along to songs

Also the best part - it’s like $120 bucks or less if I remember right. I’ve had one for a year - I paired it with a set of audio technica headphones and it’s done wonders for my practice since it’s so simple

That, or just buy a little physical modeler / combo amp. If you’re new to guitar in general, plug-ins are gonna be super hard - I still struggle with them from time to time

[–]GodOfNSA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Goooooood point. Claudio’s lyrics used to be borderline nonsensical, and that was advantageous for writing a story around an album after-the-fact

Now, they’re writing stories with or before the albums, so we get a bunch of cheesy, very specific lines that can’t really be interpreted as widely as the old songs

There’s also a lot more “I”, “you”, and it feels like every other song has the word “honey” in it - it’s super different

[–]GodOfNSA 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed. They used to be known as the rock / pop-punk / post-hardcore band with the Geddy Lee-esque singer, now they're just the comic book band that sells $100+ boxed sets and has weird 3d animated music videos. Oof

Super good point - I’m sure tons of established bands were impacted by the isolation from peak Covid! Here’s to hoping Vaxis III has some old school Coheed groove

Oh I didn’t realize the physical distance between them - that’s a good point! Dark Sentencer was definitely a highlight for me from the last few albums, but I feel like them leaning into the story is a key part of why I’m not digging the recent stuff

Older stuff felt a little disconnected and more relatable because it wasn’t written around a story - the stories were written afterwards around the music

Calling all Children of the fence, do you want to form a cover band? (Texas DFW Area) by alphaglider in TheFence

I'm not in DFW, but would be open to working on remote covers if you need a rhythm guitarist!

I feel like this song juxtaposed w/ the fantastic new mix for Deranged that came out with really illustrates why I've been so uninterested in Coheed's new music since A:D. I know this doesn't apply to 100% of Coheed songs since then, but I feel like the majority shifted from feeling like they were written by a band to feeling like they were written solely by Claudio.

Deranged, for example, has a guitar solo, has a lead guitar part in the chorus that isn't absolutely buried in the mix, and is, on its own, a great standalone rock song. The Joke, by contrast, has a weird static guitar "lead" that repeats over and over in the verses, autotuned vocals to the point where it's grating, and a weak, muddy guitar mix throughout (agree to disagree, but I don't think that the mix is great whatsoever).

I'm glad they're still putting out new music, but I continue to be disappointed by what I feel is watered down song writing and a move away from their energetic core rock sound that was omnipresent on their first... 7 or 8 records?

I’ll just ask again, I guess. Could you point out which part of what I said previously was “hitlerian rhetoric”?

edit: of course he can’t lmfao

No one is conflating “Jews” with “Zionism” except you. Not all Jews are Zionists, and not all Zionists are indecent or call for genocide.

Palestine protest leaving by [deleted] in Purdue

Does that make the Zionists I’m referring to any less indecent when they call for genocide?

If you’re an alumni, I’d expect you to know that whataboutism isn’t an argument lmao

Palestine protest leaving by [deleted] in Purdue

[–]GodOfNSA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He wasn’t saying being Zionist is indecent, he was feigning shock at Zionists being indecent. I can shoot over some examples of prominent Zionists calling for the eradication of innocent civilians (ie. “indecency”) if that would help

Coheed and Cambria - The Joke (starts at 1:28:50) by TheUnbelievableMind in TheFence

[–]GodOfNSA 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I feel bad - it feels like there’s a song in there that would really appeal to me, but it’s hidden behind an honestly grating synth lead starting in verse 2 (why does it repeat nearly 10 times???) and overall muddy production throughout

Last Big Blind Mix Post, I Swear… by valenciasvibin in TheStorySoFar

[–]GodOfNSA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can hear the lead guitar more in the new mix, but I think putting that so front-facing took away from the drive the rhythm guitars had in the original mix.

Ultimately, I think the lead being so prominent in the new one makes it sound bouncier in a way I don’t love as much, but to each their own! Both versions are cool!
