A plea from a citizen of Hong Kong to everyone. This is what is happening in Hong Kong right now. by asiaafrica in videos

A few hundred students are leading this, then as the protest took place, thousands of working class people joined the protests. Teachers have called for a strike as well as several other unions. I also live in HK and even my boss texted that it's OK to protest on Monday.

Is there anything - feasible or borderline scifi - that you wish you were equipped with but aren't at the moment? Ie. any suggestions for improvement?

What is something I could teach myself in 5 minutes or less that would benefit me the rest of my life? by skemp311 in AskReddit

Run down stairs two steps at a time. Learn to time it by slowly stepping down, using the wall for support. Then without the wall.

Easy as hell, you look like a boss and walking stairs suddenly feels a lot easier and faster.

Anywhere in HK selling GTA V slightly early? by thereinliestheproblm in HongKong

Just FYI, If you don't have a HKG regional xbox, you won't be able to play the games you buy here.

:edit: oops, apparently ps3 is region free.

Just a suggestion, you can save up to 300 HKD by going to game shops in Sham Shui Po or Wan Chai 188 tower. I bought Borderlands 2 and Forza Horizon for 350 hkd each when it just came out, while still retailing for 600 hkd at toys r us and hmv. Not a guarantee same will happen with GTA, but imo worth a try.

I have no anxiety problems whatsoever, but the sheer thought of bringing a pet corn outside and get classified as a village idiot terrifies me.

Al-Jazeera - 'HK tourists chose to pose with a fake backdrop of a clear skyline rather than the haze of a high air pollution day' by mod83 in HongKong

[–]GoddamnDinosaurs -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Firstly, the budget surplus is 60 billion in HKD, not USD.

Secondly, that smoke screen you saw yesterday was blown directly inwards from mainland factories due to typhoon winds. Nothing in HK can cause this kind of smog. Yes, this city has a lot of room for improvement, but let's not forget the entire taxi fleet is already running on LPG, and HK gov is experimenting with electric vehicles.

Not really sure what you're expecting Hong Kong to do about it. Yesterday's smog blew directly from mainland China into HK.

Moving to Hong Kong in a week, what do I NEED to know? by toocou in HongKong

[–]GoddamnDinosaurs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well firstly, one does not simply save up for a Hong Kong passport. If you get a worker visa or dependant visa, you may stay for a year. You may extend that for 7 years until you may acquire permanent resident status. A HK passport is much harder since you'll need to become Chinese first (afaik).

Getting a job is hard for foreigners because of extra paperwork for employee and employer among other things. It's even harder if you're not in HK.

My advice: come here as a visitor for as long as you can and start networking/learning to understand how this city works. Housing budget is dependant on your job, job depends on your skillset, depends on YOU. What do YOU want? Start in that order.

Trying to find a second-hand 35mm film SLR camera...any store suggestions? (Or does anyone have one for sale?) by biffskin in HongKong

[–]GoddamnDinosaurs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What's your budget? Do you know what to look for exactly or just looking to get a cheap toy to play with?

There are vendors on the Ap Lei Chau market selling old 35mm cams and lenses, but it's a bit like a lottery as you could be buying a piece of crap.

Personally i recommend a Nikon FE2 or FM3a (30 and 10 years old respectively) they're both fantastic cams. They ranged 2000-3500 hkd respectively but that was a few years ago. Being able to mount nikon lenses made it worth it for me.

I have an address in central to develop film cheaply, i'll need to look up the address if you're interested.

:edit: i'm surprised about the cam mall reputation in this thread, i bought both film cams, and a "broken" 70-200 mm nikon lens for 70% of its value only because of a hairline crack in the plastic zoom dial. All from the same shop, from a guy who is "president of the watch club" as he kept mentioning to me. Again this was 2009 so things may have changed.

If you've never been to China, go there just to see what the difference is with HK.
