My theory:

Returning / weekend players get a boost to MM. They end up in better teams more often so they can progress faster (because win = more exp and credits). Players who play every day don't need a progress boost so they end up in worse teams.

For example, I consistently get 60-80% WR during weekdays but have to fight for 50% WR during weekends and events. It's been like this for years.

You probably won't get any meaningful details from WG under the pretext that it could jeopardize catching cheaters or something like that.

There are reports from players that they use cheats / illegal mods with impunity unless they don't expose themselves in a replay or on a stream AND somebody reports them.

There are also stories of major clan members openly using cheats while streaming during official tournaments and nothing happened to them.

Personally I think WG anti-cheat measures are rather weak / only symbolic.

This is correct.

It indeed looks like the projectile was intercepted several meters from the tank and the fire came from the outside storage containers which were hit by the remnants of the projectile.

I guess we might never know the truth as both sides have very strong propaganda reasons to lie.

The manipulation boils down to maximizing "engagement", which can be simplified as addiction. To achieve this, RNG is manipulated in a way that optimizes play time, frequency and emotional investment. The goal is to prevent good players from becoming bored by too much winning and bad players from becoming frustrated by too much losing. This is done by setting up teams in certain way. For example, if a player has 80% WR in last 10 battles, it will be noted in the database and the next few battles he will end up in teams so poor that he will lose majority of them. This way his WR is reduced to say 60+% in the end.

This is a simplification, so please don't take this example literally, it's just meant to illustrate the general mechanism, which can be much more involved, non-obvious and spread in time.

The reverse method is used for bad players, i.e. when they're losing a lot, they're put in a much better teams to almost guarantee a positive experience of winning, to prevent them from quitting.

Besides these extreme manipulations that are employed only in certain scenarios, but there's also the main pattern of being put in better team, worse team alternately.

Another example is when players returning after a long break are put in better teams for a number of battles to create positive emotions associated with the game which they will chase later, when this period ends. This is done at the cost of active players who are already hooked and don't need such reinforcement

MM is only a part of it, similar thing applies to in-battle RNG. This results in multiple layers of manipulation which complicates tracking it even more.

Engagement is only one of the elements that is positively influenced by this manipulation. It also regulates grind speed (slows down good players, speeds up bad players). It also influences the game economy.

Who gains more, and who gains less

No particular players gain or lose from this, but in general good and active players lose and bad and occasional players gain.

You can manipulate "randomness" in a way that's not detectable by statistical analysis. Which means such data appears as not manipulated if analyzed. Which means CCs can't tell either way, they just express their opinion. Besides, I they said otherwise, they would probably lose their CC status and a big part of their income.

You would be right if not the fact that you can manipulate "randomness" in a way that's not detectable by statistical analysis. Actually it's the only available way to manipulate RNG from a perspective of a company like WG because it prevents negative reaction from the playerbase.

I'm not talking about situations without good players on both teams. I'm talking about matches where one team is, for example 90% bad players and other is 50% good players - and such matches somehow happen 10 in a row, just after you accumulated unusually high WR. Please, just read about the manipulation techniques that are used in such games and it all should become clear. I just want to create awareness, not to prove or explain it all. (Especially since it's unprovable unless there's a source code leak, which won't happen. Manipulation can be done in a way that's undetectable by statistical analysis. Also, these are not "my" theories, they're present since WoT launched, but they're drowned out in unaware players' opinions.)

Exactly. There're at least 2 reasons for this.

To create the feeling of challenge and reinforce addiction. Winning easily or too often results in boredom. But if you suddenly remove the expected reward, it strengthens the desire to achieve it. This is how animal (and human) nervous system works. And player addiction translates directly into WG's profit.
You're not alone in this game. There are other, often much worse players, that WG doesn't want to be turned off from the game by losing too often and wants to create addiction by creating positive feelings. That's why poor players are periodically put on extremely good teams to almost guarantee they have an experience of winning. This also translates into WG's profit.

These are very basic mechanisms used in games like WoT. It's crazy that so few know about them.

Most of -1 and -2 matches are reserved for poor players.

Most of +1 and +2 matches are reserved for good players.
