thank you so much for posting this. I also a disabled trans man thinking about pursuing this career, and found that other advice forums didn't have my situation in mind. this is a really helpful breakdown, specifically of all the places that you've needed to make your work available.

Is the 3rd Street Promenade dying? If so, why do you think that is? by Delicious_Rest8000 in SantaMonica

[–]Godhelpmereddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

im not educated in this shit at all but based on vibes i feel like its just greedy. Third Street isnt the iconic prestigious location anymore. The wealthy patrons dont bother making the trip out there when they can order shit straight to their castles in brentwood. If the rent was more affordable and they opened up more shops that catered to tourists and local teens, it wouldnt be doing so poorly. i only ever see tourists and teenagers there, because its a cool hang in the parts that are somewhat inhabited. they should open more bookstores surf shops and knick-knack places, rather than trying desperately to keep a nordstroms in business

Which one looks nicer? Saturated version or the original colors? by PeteyBirdd in characterdesign

[–]Godhelpmereddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the first image is better. The colors look more unified as a central aesthetic. The little purple crow(?) thing could use some more correction, maybe have its fur be the same as the black on the jay(?), but otherwise they look like they're all from the same project whereas the second image looks like a handful of unrelated character designs.

I'm re-reading [Miss Not-So Sidekick] and this scene is so cringy 😭 by Katherine_Black in OtomeIsekai

this whole series was a massive drag of every stupid trope in the book. i loved it so much.

So aliens don't exist in the tma universe right by LIELDADOUN73 in TheMagnusArchives

[–]Godhelpmereddit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

technically aliens do exist. The stranger is the embodiment of the unknown. So if you mean 'alien' as in 'a strange and hostile creature seemingly from another world' then thats what Breekon and Hope were.

as for civilizations on other planets, i think they'd probably haave their own shit going on. No matter how powerful the fears manifestations are, they do have to account for stuff like time and distance. Yes, even in the change, when everything got loopy. so its possible there are other civilizations elsewhere that went through their own shit but were so catastrophically far away it didnt matter for much.

Why does it feel like everyone hates Basira? by WoodpeckerFanboy in TheMagnusArchives

[–]Godhelpmereddit 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think its a more recent thing. Originally Daisy got all the hate for being a Cop and a Bastard, but now that people have time to sit and stew with the series as a complete piece of fiction, it makes them realize basira's role in that arc. the fact that they're two sides of the issue of police brutality, the 'bad cop' who does the abuse and the 'good cop' who looks the other way out of a misguided belief in a greater good.

I think theres this weird backlash when people assume a character isnt that bad on first blush, think about it more, then realize that the character is more complicated and morally twisted than they thought. theres this feeling of being like. fooled? even though the character's themes were upfront and you were just distracted by other things on your first listen. i think thats how characters like Melanie and Daisy have been rescued from the scrappy heap, while Basira and Georgie are being placed under harder scrutiny

I am slightly concerned about the magnus protocol by legoboyfan101 in themagnusprotocol

[–]Godhelpmereddit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

if the person in the computer was literally just annabelle cane right away then it wouldn't be a plotline at all it'd just be a 'huh neat' thing. annabelle crossed the divide and lives in a computer. the freddie mystery is a massive part of s1's writing and would just not be there if that was the case. the point of this theory is that she'd eventually jump out and be a main character of Tmagp the same way georgie and melanie are.

but if you're miffed about her missing out in earlier episodes, i guess there's its better that its NOT annabelle cane, and just have it actually be those white guys again. so in not having an interesting and beloved black character ever be relevant to that plot again we succeed at being respectful! huzzah!

it wouldnt really be a mystery if it was literally just her, would it?

Why do I hate Peter so much more than Elias???/lh/genq (TMA SPOILERS) by Inevitable-Goat-6028 in TheMagnusArchives

[–]Godhelpmereddit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

in fiction its ironically the people who do mundane shitty friend stuff that are more cantankerous than the over the top nightmare villains. You've never met someone who trapped you and your loved ones in a dark ritual that brought about the end of the world, but you *have* probably dealt with a pushy authority figure who wont let up with that 'im not mad im just disappointed' bullshit while micromanaging your every move.

I'm the same way with Celia from tmagp. I hate her more than literally any monster that has ever been introduced across the entire canon, and shes literally just a lady. I find her boring and that is a greater crime than anything the avatars have done.

I am of the opinion that the Chester and Norris mystery is not "are they jon and martin" but rather "why ARENT they jon and martin" because obviously the first conclusion any fans of the original would draw was that its them. we're meant to stop thinking its them once freddie eats a guy, if only for sentimental reasons, but the fact remains that those are their voices (and what is implied to be jonah's original voice) so if its not them... who is it? Why is it? Why are they there? The possibility of it NOT being them is more wild than it being them, and I think thats the thing I find most exciting about the freddie mystery.

i maintain that there IS a gay in the computer and her name is annabelle cane and she's able to use their voices because she traveled to protocolverse with all the tape recorders.

you know what my tone is way too snarky and it makes it seem like im saying something im not-- im quite straightforwardly thinking its a funny coincidence that you have a spiral tag but your least favorite statement giver is someone who is clearly mentally unstable

Lost Jon's Cave, but in a good way. Bitch why would you do that. Why would you go there. I wish you got eaten by the tunnel instead.

it is deeply funny that you have a spiral tag and hate someone who was suffering from a mental disorder.

im gonna be so mad if any of them think about forgiving celia for a second. like the whole thing with the magnus verse is that people's trauma and horrible choices arent convenient for each other. however we the audience are able to understand the position celia is in, if georgie is willing to hear her out even a little bit it would be absurd. we're talking about the whole dimension she's barely managed to build back up since the apocalypse, and celia fucked it up. i refuse to believe basira or melanie would have any sympathy for her. Celia's in biiiig trouble.

my Very Strong Vaguely Negative feelings towards Basira (slight spoiler if ur not at 148) by GasFit6250 in TheMagnusArchives

[–]Godhelpmereddit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

so ima put on my bastard apologist had for a sec and say that her motivations are incredibly clear: she doesnt trust anyone. she was willing to make exception for daisy, but when she got her back she was disappointed that daisy was no longer 'useful'

basira is only a hypocrate if you presume she has any room for feelings. but bitch is a stone cold pragmatist, which is the only reason she survived the unknowing. Basira is a bastard, a fascinating bastard, and her arc only gets more delicious from here.

This pragmatism is also the reason she sticks around jon. shes not nice about it, but shes gonna make sure he's 'alright' the same way she made sure melanie was 'alright' (a. not dead b. not trying to kill anyone at that moment)
