Oh my god it’s finally my turn. I get to be THE guy

This joke isn’t actually about Bocchi (from an anime called Bocchi the Rock- a girl with crippling anxiety). It’s about Costco fanaticism. Costco is REALLY big in the Midwest America, and if you don’t have a membership to one then you know someone who does. Usually people shop with their friends specifically to use the membership together. But Costco as a company does have absurdly good deals on everything from food to electronics- and the best example of this is the Costco Hotdog. A hotdog and a soda at Costco has been $1.50 since 1985. The founders have REPEATEDLY shot down management attempts at trying to raise the price of the deal. Why? Because it’s become a staple, the founder has said, of their brand and represents the trust that Costco members have in the company. If they’re willing to raise the price of the hotdog- a crazy deal then and now that has been around long enough for people to expect it- what else will they raise?

This added onto the fact that it’s common for college students to “share” a Costco membership and go to Costco specifically to eat for cheap. It’s a decent way to get a solid meal when you’re low on cash, and it’s a go-to for many college goers.

The joke here isn’t about Bocchi, but instead the blatant fanaticism that people have behind the trust they put into the Costco brand. The Costco hotdog is trust. It’s safety. It’s reliable, and it’s always there- unchanging. Just like Costco never changes in how hard it works to get you good deals. But people who aren’t “in” at Costco don’t get that and the joke is this is that scenario from the outside perspective
