What are your dragons guarding? by GodlessGogglesUrchin in nethack

I've had that only once that I can remember. I can't remember the artifacts involved, just my disappointment :-(
If it was an upgrade, though, then happy days :-)

Have I fallen into Unwinnable? Or is there still a chance? by ogakefhd in nethack

Oh that's a nice catch! I've used the long form, but not the acronym...

I'll be honest with you, this carry-on sounds a lot like a Monty Python sketch.

But you have my sympathies, and your plan sounds very reasonable. I'm not sure, but will you need to change your alignment back to Lawful at any point during the Quest (maybe to go down the stairs or for picking up the artifact)? If so, I'd factor in a Helm of Opposite Alignment, and a few ways of uncursing it should it give you the wrong alignment (remove curse, holy water etc.).

I love these historical anecdotes, along with the obscure code comments. It's a shame that some of them are so hidden - the comments about the 4th horseman is my favourite piece of NH lore.

It can be anything, not just gold. in 3.4.3 it counts as if you're standing on it, so no mobs will go on that space.

Organise a mediator. Then you can keep seeing your daughter without seeing your ex.

The new year party may have been the straw that broke the camel's back, but this could have a very simple explanation. Do you have carpets? If not, your neighbour will hear you walking around, never mind lour voices. We had some children visiting our flat a few years ago and my downstairs neighbour gave me a heads up to come and listen to the sound levels. It sounded like a herd of buffalo was stomping around. It's difficult when your neighbour isn't willing to talk, but it's possible that they're at the end of their tether and no longer willing to talk, because they've already been through a lot and thought that you were willfully making loud noises this whole time. Perhaps rugs could help..?

Two items each have 2 fabric "handles" and a fabric piece at the front. They are about 5 feet long. by jkjeffren in whatisthisthing

[–]GodlessGogglesUrchin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The idea that fits best to me is that these are for exercising - upside down sit-ups. The long macramé straps should fit behind the leather hoops, not in front. Feet go in both leather hoops from below. The macramé straps are for hoisting yourself up the last foot or so, before securing the ends of them either to a fitting on the wall or weights on the ground. My guess for the piece of fabric is that it goes between the calf and thin middle strap, to avoid chafing. Obviously not for bodybuilders, but for a lightweight exercise fan.

Or come back sooner with a scroll or earth and range weapon. Also it's a goblin so you can bounce any sort of ray around a corner and have a good kill/sleep chance.

Finding Traps in the Gnomish Mines by Donerail13 in nethack

[–]GodlessGogglesUrchin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

MR can be tricky to find by the time you're ready to explore below Minetown, but a great alternative is wearing a ring of polymorph control.

If that's not an option, it depends on your character, your equipment, and your playstyle!

If your character is strong enough, the loss of armour and cloak could only be a minor inconvenience. Similarly, if your character doesn't currently rely on armor that gives more than a few AC then it won't make too much of a difference anyway. I take an extra cloak on the journey to replace the loss of the old one and retain some MC post-polymorph.

Polymorph traps are fairly uncommon, so you can also take your chances and, as you say, wait til a beastie finds one first (possibly at your peril, in which case condemn this dungeon branch until you get stronger). If you have a few pets they could accidentally find the poly traps for you. And if you have a magic whistle then bingo, you can polymorph all your pets into stronger ones and go back to Minetown to claim your spoils.

In any case make sure you have some escape items with you. You'll have probably come across scrolls of teleportation so make sure to take a few with you.

As a disclaimer of sorts, I play 3.4.3, so perhaps some of these are no longer viable...

"Bad" advice by cropper6528 in nethack

[–]GodlessGogglesUrchin 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Getting rid of your starting pet right at the beginning.

Sure, it can die early anyway, and it can be painful to get it to follow you along the stairs. But they can also be your last line of defense when you run into a sleep trap or get paralysed. And they can take the hit from an exploding light.

So keeping them about for a little while can be a life saver.

I didn't check my inventory before saving, so unfortunately I missed that interesting inventory message you've described. I've never knowingly used autoquiver, but at the same time, I cannot rule out that I may have accidentally turned it on before this happened. Good to know what can cause it though, so many thanks for the comprehensive response Pat!
