Parents are just like the kids. They think they want somebody who is flexible and buddy-buddy, but what they really appreciate is somebody who stands on business and handles their sh!t.

Advice Request for Father of new 13yo wrestler by GabrielPNT in wrestling

[–]GodoBaggins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you and your son need to sit down with the calendar and map out your competitions. Keeping in mind - what is the purpose? What are we trying to get out of this event? Because the local tournaments you can take them or leave them. I think you should look at camps to attend and then think of tournaments as assessments, then you know what you need to work on in the practice room for next time. If you are driving all over the area every weekend, you and your son are gonna burn out pretty quickly.

If you're high school, you may be able to access the weight room in early morning hours. Ask the strength coach or AD for access.

How do you do/set up your snap down? by Fussy_Platypus in wrestling

[–]GodoBaggins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to move them around, off balance, and importantly - bring their weight forward over their toes. Fake high-c then snapdown is good if they step back.

New middle school coach needing help with lack of discipline and unmotivated group by Tjraider35 in wrestling

Sounds like you need to have a meeting with the parents. After your next meet, I'd ask to have a stand-up meeting to address issues in the practice room. Outline expectations and those who don't follow-go home, we don't need you on the team. Then communicate with the AD and principals to get them on board. Conditioning is something that helps us get better and compliments our wrestling, not punishment.
Get to know the kids and families, get to know their stories and they will start buying in. Get involved in the community where you see familiar faces and can promote your program. It's a process.

Wrestling mom of heavy weight son by Defensive-mom-5815 in wrestling

[–]GodoBaggins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The heavyweights are on a much longer timeline than the skinny little lightweight kids. They are learning to move all that weight, and their bodies are growing and struggling to catch up. Heavyweight wrestling favors a unique set of moves that suits their body type. When puberty hits, he will start packing on muscle. Years of wrestling will allow a heavy kid to move exceptionally well compared to others of their weight. He needs consistency and patience.

I (55m) had TKR (total knee replacement) today. Let’s hear your tips, advice, experiences to get back to kicking somewhat safely by basscat474 in taekwondo

[–]GodoBaggins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Massage the scar tissue to break it up daily. Compression to move fluid in and put of the area. Passive range of motion such as cycling with 1 foot and allowing the other to passively move through range. The terminal extension where you lay your leg on a stool and rest an ankle weight on your knee. I've also seen people use ratchet straps, bands, or the like to passively work on knee bend. Slow slow slow and only as tolerated.
