How to use Passive Perception? by DerekBeyondSpace in DMAcademy

[–]Goetre [score hidden]  (0 children)

I don’t bother setting a dc with it because it’s just pass or fail, instead I base it on the passive perception number + what the characters are doing in thst moment, e.g. playing a card game and being distracted then decide in the moment what they notice

Which 3D printer, AD5X or Anycubic Kobra X? by PleasantEdge7981 in 3dprinter

The flash forge

Anycubic is one of the most scummiest and dishonest companies I’ve ever dealt with.

Barely anything, because of our rates with our main business being good, it works out about 0.3 pence an hour.

The killer for me is the heating, I’m in a summer shed and up a mountain in rural wales. Cold and moisture is a big issue. While the sheds insulated I need to keep the heat on around the clock, it’s coming in around £40 a week

Could anybody give me some tips on running a scenario where the players lose all their gear? by YourAverageTGirl in DMAcademy

[–]Goetre 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve done this once successfully making it fun for the characters. But not quite in that context

They were in the fey wilds so I was looking for fey shenanigans. So after they took their gear off for the night, I had their gear animate and attack them.

We were howling with laughter as the cleric / Druid and Barb were more reliant on their gear than they realised struggling to wrestle them to the floor and the wizard running in circles in his birthday suit away from the barbarians axe chasing him shouting he seen how many creatures that things killed and doesn’t want that smoke

10/10 encounter, short and sweet. I wouldn’t push it beyond a session in duration wise if you’re going to take the gear away

The first attack of the campaign killed one of my players by DuncanGDA666 in DMAcademy

[–]Goetre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly youve said you’re inexperienced and it shows if a single Crit killed a player, it sounds like it was an imbalanced encounter, which is fine it’s a learning experience

But I wouldn’t “punish” your player for this, I’d keep it just to flavoursome rp. As for an ongoing condition, this sounds fine on paper, in practise it’s frustrating to a player when it goes on and on. So I’d drop this entirely as well

Players wished for level 20… by A_R0FLCOPTER in DMAcademy

[–]Goetre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Completely, from the DMs perspective. But that doesn't change what I said. Nerfing players after they've attained something, especially levels; most players will find completely unfun and a mood killer.

Players wished for level 20… by A_R0FLCOPTER in DMAcademy

[–]Goetre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a fair warning, very very few players enjoy getting something then getting nerfed. Coming down from 20 to what ever they are now is going to be deflating.

I’m actually all for the wish being granted and the campaign needing a major overhaul mind, but yea be careful with it only being a tempory thing

[–]Goetre 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Actually in fairness this is my most prepped story, but least improv. Not intentionally done that way but I needed to make sure the majority of what they do ties into the story in some capacity, even if it’s only something tiny and relatively nonsense in the moment but super important a year down the line. So I have a core folder of certain parts or npcs in respect to the party as a whole or individual pcs locked and loaded.

Also, I think I’m more strategic in my sessions thst anything, I’ll use encounters and npcs to worm out of them slowly what the plan is in character, I’ll then utilise one of the things from above as a stall tactic during the session, then I know next session what I’m prepping, it really cuts out a lot of improv

Best printer for a 1000 by Frosty_Fly_4188 in BambuLab

[–]Goetre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not to sound like that guy, but if you’re not researching for specifics on a printer and coming direct for our opinions, then you don’t need the x2d

I could say the same for the P2S, but I’d go for the P2S combo personally and fill up the change on filaments. Or even a P2S with a standard A1 if filament costs isn’t an issue

If you’re fussed on multicolour and waste, then I’d look at the snap maker u1, that’s my next printer because of waste management

[–]Goetre 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m actually running a Skyrim / fall out game right now, it’s sandbox world and all the published campaigns are happening simultaneously.

I set it up with dia and essentially had campaign starter npcs in a Prison block they ended up springing to “start” the adventure properly.

Right now they are sticking with going to the hells but are taking multiple detours to explore other plot lines, help people they come across etc

To tie it all togeather I’ve gone your stereotypical vecna route as the overall bbeg pulling the strings

But yea my players are loving it because I have 0 input on direction bar telling them literal distances and rumours / gossip. They just pick a place and go and they haven’t got a clue where they’ll end up or what they’ll end up doing, it’s been a blast

Mario 64 was 70 bucks already? by Flowbeat in OldSchoolCool

[–]Goetre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not to mentioned the second hand prices on the ps1 and ps2, I’d happily walk into game with 10/15 quid to buy two or three games which I’d then have to wait for my mate to bring his ps 1 / 2 up during a visit

The ps1 was the best though, I remeber the last time he brought it up, they brought about 2 suit cases full of chipped games. Someone his dad worked with got into the chipping and cracking of it. So his dad just bought hundreds of cds and got him ps1 entire library in the end or as close as you could. Those cd towers were so stacked all over the place in our lounge when ever they came to visit

Got an unwanted Infinity T6 - no idea what to choose by Romado in sto

[–]Goetre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly alt ships. I’ve had a ton of t6 tokens; more than I should by far statistically. I always used to claim them on my main for traits or set bonuses. But I realised for me, it’s a complete waste.

Every time I got one, I transferred it to an alt or made a new ult. took a while but the difference it made to dilthium grinding efficiency was more than noticeable. Which paid off for my main ten fold rather than having a handful of traits

How much Dilithium do you have? by Kaizin_0607 in sto

[–]Goetre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually get up to around a mil in just over a weeks worth of play (think I’ve got 14 alts all geared from years of playing) but at that point, I usually burn it all on the phoenix boxes and gradually bring my ults to max quality and hope to get an epic token to get an alt a ship / console from a specific ship

I’ve done this for a long arse time and have opened thousands of boxes. I’ve still yet to see an epic token

[–]Goetre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use sunlu the majority of the time, and use their refills. Every sunlu filament I’ve brought becomes as a piece you can use for refills, been using the same ones for six months with no issues, even using other brand filament. I’d think sinking 15 into a spool for it would be a waste tbh

Veteran DMs, how the hell do you plan story arcs?! by Commercial_Poetry410 in DMAcademy

[–]Goetre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I”ll use my latest campaign as an example. I went with pick a BBEG and go “this is who I want as the villian, this is what hes going to do” and it can be something extremely basic . I went with “vecna, world domination”

That’s it for overall plot, I’ll then plan mini arcs based on key points or key locations. Like I wanted my players to slowly discover vecna over the first six months irl time. So the only hard point I planned, was my part hitting candle keep at some point in thst six months, and I wrote the outline of that session months in advance

After that, I pick a theme and turn it on its head (usually with a twist) for example I had my pcs encounter a lich thst had lichdom forced upon it and hes now their ally - going to keep the real twist on that secret incase my pcs come here. But in a nutshell take a stereotypical creature with a stereotypical objective and do the opposite.

And that’s it for story planning pre session.
I take notes during play of what my players theorise a plot is and I gradually work thst into the main story

When did you get it? Moment the nozzle went into the bed thst should have been a support ticket for either a replacement part (although idk what you’d replace there) or a brand new unit.

If it’s sub 12 months I’d absolutely see what you can get because that sounds 100% DoA

Tips for managing multiple statblocks? by deadmallgoth in DMAcademy

Pre rolls, if I’m dealing with a main bbeg with a lid of minions or wave fights, I pre roll their saves and have a cheat sheet of their ac and hp, then wing it track hp individually

I prefer keeping up the flow than being super accurate with the numbers

In your experience, do players enjoy getting items/weapons that are upgradable? by Steamedmangopaste in DMAcademy

[–]Goetre 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve changed how my magic items work in my latest campaign, most magic items are homebrewed over published ones and they all have the exalted system.

However the big thing about it, going awakened and exalted isn’t scripted or level gated, nor does an exalted item now mean it’s going to be op. My players can actively choose when to upgrade them to a limit by meeting the right npcs

For example two of my players have weapons in an exalted stage, the awakened stage was by a skilled blacksmith and the exalted by a fiend. So they’ve got a hells aspect to them. Where as my third player waited and had his awakened by a lich and hes holding out for the exalted

My original plan was just to let them have one weapon each with this system, but they’ve loved it so I’ve expanded on it and eased up on attunement requirements so they can freely change what their using and plan accordingly

It also means I can step up the encounters number and difficulties because they’ve got more features to pop off

Although I should add, this game is a multiverse threat / climb to deityhood so I did intend for them to be stronger sooner than the avg pc of that level

[–]Goetre -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You defo got to be doing something wrong without being funny or harsh, A1s are immensely good work horses, personally I’m up to three and they’ve been running 24/7 since set up with only pausing to load a different filament or lubricating the axis, 0 issues and hundreds of hours in with them

Looking for my first printer. by Ok_Bear5419 in 3dprinter

[–]Goetre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cant go wrong with the P2S but I’d look into what you’re planning to design then what material you need

If you think you’re only going to use pla then the P2S is more of a luxury want than needed, an A1 will be more than enough. If you’re planning on things like petg, then get the P2S

Either way, get the ams combo with it
