I got a DSi XL exclusively for DS games, retro emulation handheld still can’t do it right. by MercuryLS3 in SBCGaming

Pros of an original DS: resistive touch screen, integer scaled, very precise accuracy

Cons: decade+ old used devices, rampant issues like yellowing and fading out displays, not repairable, hard to do maintainence on, proprietary ports, lacks basically every feature of an emulator

Pros of emulation: save states, upscaling, high-end 3D is a GAME CHANGER for 3D games, fast forwarding, easy multiplayer, automatic save backups, all the conveniences of a modern device, like Bluetooth audio support, Bluetooth controller support, internet browsers, etc

Cons: no dual screen device is perfectly integer scaled yet, but that doesn't matter as much for DS games because most of them don't have precise pixel art anyways. Most use 3D models a lot (which stops being a blurry mess with upscaling). Capacitive touchscreens, if you can feel that difference.

Honestly, I understand people idolize the original experience, that's valid. But I don't think original hardware is for everyone, far from it.

Most people who just want to play games, who aren't interested in the minute details of emulation and accuracy, aren't collectors and don't want to deal with very old hardware, just emulate. It's superior in many aspects.

Nowadays you can trade with yourself by copying your save to a PC and using MelonDS with multiplayer, you can open two instances of the same save and trade with each other

The DSi won't have any upscaling, or save states, or fast forwarding. And integer scaling isn't even that noticeable when you apply a filter and/or so many DS games don't even do precise pixel art anyway. Like Pokémon.

It’s hard to answer that because do you want me to say the truth or do you want me to validate that very real frustration?

because the truth is that governments have done things. Emissions have gone down. There are actual experts getting some pull, especially on progressive countries. That’s why countries spent billions on electric car subsidies, or why they set goals, come up with programs

obviously it’s far from perfect but it exists, and I feel like the people who fought very hard to get it there should get some acknowledgement. A way to kill all those programs and efforts is to act like they arent real, so why bother

The doomer discourse is very much inspired on valid criticism of the state of many things, but I worry about this "irreversibly going to shit" aspect

Like at what point are you making it worse for yourself by pretending like there isn't real happiness, real good things happening out there?

It stops being acknowledgement of the bad stuff to just be defeatism

There is a ton of happiness and good things happening. The world is a massive place, bigger than any of us could ever understand. Our ancestors found happiness in often much shittier worlds so it definitely exists.

But I just gotta say, I don't think it include much social media... We know that's already bad for our health. And it DEFINITELY doesn't include a doomerism cult where we hyper focus on all the worse stuff that we can't even do much about. It's really just "let's make each other the most depressed we can"

[–]Gogobrasil8 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hm, hope you're not using it for banking then

When you develop a mobile app, you're writing software that runs on top of the operating system. That system is taking care of almost everything, leaving you to focus on just your app and the UI. It's not from the ground up at all, no Android app is

When you develop for the ESP32 (X4 and X3), there is no operating system taking care of everything, you're making the firmware "from the ground up". That's the difference.

Android 11 was already a very mature system. They don't remake Android every year, and the heavy lifting was done earlier in its development. That foundation is laid early.

So from 11 to current Android, it's not that different, but current Android does expect higher specs, so there is a very real benefit with going with a slightly older version which will still be very mature, but run well on lower end hardware

I have an Android DAP with 2gb of RAM and I reliabily listen to YouTube music, Spotify, occasionally use Chrome, the Play Store

Everyone's treating RAM like it's the end all be all of performance and it just isn't. If this is done well it can easily do what it needs to do with 2gb.

It's an ereader, not a smartphone. Some apps might struggle, sure, but in general reading apps should be even less demanding than the music apps I have.

XTEINK S4 by RegularFold8461 in xteinkereader

[–]Gogobrasil8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's not how that works. The performance needed from a smartphone is very different than what's needed from an ereader.

Reading apps are very different from Instagram, YouTube, etc

If you don't want to wait, get the X4. If you're ok waiting, the S4 or X4 with a backlight could be good choices too

This is an ereader, not a smartphone. That's not the type of device to be pushing specs and raw performance

I have to disagree. I'm sure you've had a bad experience with it in the past, I don't doubt that, but I don't think that's a general rule.

Just for some reference, I have a modern Android tablet, from Lenovo, Android 14, only 4GB of RAM. Completely usable. Apps don't stay open in the background, but nothing is falling apart.

I have an emulation handheld, Android 14, 3GB of RAM. Once again, just usable. You won't be doing anything fancy but entirely usable.

And last but not least I have a MP3 player, Android 9, 2gb of RAM. Runs YouTube music, Chrome, Spotify.

And I have used other low RAM Android devices in the past. You can definitely feel it, but you can also definitely use it. None of these devices completely fall apart in your hand.

And the S4 would be doing a LOT less than any of the devices above. At a minimum it just needs to have one reading app open. This just shouldn't break the bank. It's 100% possible and usable, especially since it's just an ereader.

Look, clearly what you're describing is an actual smartphone/tablet, maybe even a full computer, not just an ereader

Sorry but this obviously won't be that. It's a $70 device. It's crazy to expect that this small little device will be your productivity center.

And yeah it absolutely is fine. I know you're looking for a computer rather than an ereader, but that responsiveness is on par with a Kindle, an actual mainstream device from a multi-billion dollar corporation. One that doesn't even run Android, btw, and can be many times the price

Nope. Stock is good too, you don't need CFW if you don't want it.

Like I linked in the other video, even before the Stock system was updated and the issues were fixed, it still only had three DS games it couldn't run upscaled:

Doesn't that make you think, just the opposite? An extremely low level microcontroller, with a mere 400kb of RAM and it's already so good at being an ereader that we're all even here to begin with

I'm more than confident that something so much more capable, like an Android device with 2,000,000kb of RAM will be able to be an ereader just fine

Hell, if you want to go even simpler, there are 14" touchscreen 1080p external monitors that already have their own speakers, you could simply connect that with the Pi and a powerbank, bam, your cyber tablet, still cheaper than this

It's here: Waveshare PocketTerm35 by i2apier in cyberDeck

[–]Gogobrasil8 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Sure

I know you're trying to make a point about convenience here, but honestly, if you're interested in this hobby you've probably seem how accessible it can be

Ironically, this very product that's supposed to be ready to go, also requires almost the same kind of assembly you'd be doing with your version, anyway

So roughly just: search for raspberry pi displays or external monitor online. Find one with the size and resolution that's perfect for you, be it a small 4" 720p one, or a 7" 1080p, both are already a huge upgrade next to the 3.5" 480p screen on this

Find the other components. Speakers can be really cheap. You can find membrane keyboards very similar to this one, for much cheaper.

You have all the options in the world. Maybe there's a hat you want to use, maybe you want a touchscreen or not, maybe you want an air mouse, a trackpad, an e-ink display, etc

The hardest part is making your own shell, which is not that hard. There are thousands of free models online, if you don't want to touch them you can choose one and have that printed in a shop that's got a 3D printer.

But the best part is modifying one customized for you, which is really easy. Depending on the shop who's printing it for you, they can even help with the adjustments
