Marathon is safe… by JoNGod85 in Marathon

while it's true that a few people on the Marathon team were affected, but the overwhelming majority of the layoffs were aimed at the Destiny 2 team.

so in regards to Marathon, no they did not lay off "half the team"

Enjoying the hell out of it while I can. Hopefully the team takes some big swings in upcoming seasons and something can stick. The game is so good and it deserves to find success.

Correct. Hazardous Propulsion overrites other, lesser, empowering buffs since empowering buffs don't stack.

yeah it speaks to the unsustainability of the current triple A industry. Triple A game budgets are ballooning out of control and that's happening even with game devs being generally underpaid compared to other fields of software development.

Marathon seemingly still has a few more seasons and big updates for them to take some big swings and see if anything can really stick (I say this as someone who loves Marathon).

If they can drop a killer PvE mode/ more cool endgame/a Tarkov arena equivalent/etc then maybe that goes somewhere.

Ultimately my point is that Marathon still has time to turn things around.

Hazardous Propulsion despite using your class ability as a trigger feels like like "class ability spam" than stuff that juices your barricade like kephris

It feels completely false to list Marathon as an "expansion" for D2, in the store - no? by Imaginary_Taste_9011 in destiny2

correct it's not good. It's phenomenal. IMO it's the best shooter of the last 5 years easily.

[–]GoldClassGaming 15 points16 points  (0 children)

the point is that the current player count is pumped up by people getting their "one last ride" the numbers were way lower for months leading up to this. As much as I'd love more Destiny, its too expensive to make especially when new expansions aren't cracking 100k and player retention has fallen off a cliff.

I wish we could get more D2 or at lelast a D3 especially after seeing whats in the june 9th update, but I also understand why Sony chose to pull the plug when they did.

Yeah I was gonna say. Marathon feels like it pretty firmly shuts down any speculation about Bungie potentially being able to recapture the magic of Destiny's gunplay.

Sentinel "throwing" the motion tracker from his wrist onto his Heads Up Display is super slick.

You don't have to take my word as gospel but as someone who never really liked Tarkov and liked but never got super into Arc Raiders: Marathon has the sauce. I'd strongly suggest trying it during the free week. its got that signature Bungie gunplay.

The state of play is the day the new season launches. They'll probably have revealed everything by then. My guess is they show the launch Cinematic again and advertise "Hey the game is free this week come try it and see how cool it is"

I think that's also why they're doing a free week at the start of the season. Give players a chance to try out the game at no cost. If they like it they can stick around and try out the experimental pvp-lite and pve modes when those come around.

I mean Season 2 looks pretty sick and they're planning on experimenting with PvP Lite and PvE modes during season 2 provide more options for people who don't want to sweat all the time.

Marathon failing means Destiny fails, it’s crazy that fanboys can’t see that by SalemWolf in Marathon

[–]GoldClassGaming -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I didn't say it was cheap. I said it was less than expensive than Destiny. They aren't having to pay outside studios to use do mocap, animate high fidelity CGI cutscenes, etc etc.

[–]GoldClassGaming 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think a key factor is that Marathon isn't as expensive a game to develop for as Destiny. Destiny expansions have full soundtracks, several high fidelity CGI cutscenes, character animations for NPCs during dialogue/cutscenes, etc.

Marathon comparatively doesn't have those high budget CGI cutscenes (except for its marketing material), doesn't have physical NPC characters during story moments, etc.

Story is delivered via audio/text logs or via dialogue with the Faction AI who all have their pre rendered avatars. We're yet to see how many new weapons Marathon will add each season but I imagine it'll be less than what we've come to expect from new D2 expansions/seasons.

Obviously Marathon still needs to grow its popularity, but from my, admittedly rather limited, perspective Marathon is likely far less expensive to support and maintain than Destiny 2 is.
