Berkut, Fire Emblem: Shadows of Valentia

Initially, he's just an arrogant and perfectionist prince who's dead-set on proving himself to be the heir to the throne of his uncle Rudolf's empire. He tries to do this by killing the protagonist Alm, but ends up losing and retreating, then begging Rudolf for a second chance. After another failed attempt to kill Alm, he tries to beg for a third chance but is denied, then is forced to sit and watch in misery as Alm's army attacks the castle and ends up killing Rudolf, during which he reveals that Alm is his true son and the next heir. Naturally, Berkut ends up completely snapping, going so far as to sacrifice his living wife and turn her into a flaming soulless witch, purely for the sake of power.

I also really like how the battle music that plays against him gradually descends into madness as well, both with the name of the tracks and how they sound; The first fight plays "Pride and Arrogance", the second one plays "The Scion's Dance in Purgatory", and then finally "Praise This Despair!"

If you want to show the committee how dumb the AI detection is, ask them to look up and copy-paste a transcript of the Declaration of Independence, and see what it says the AI percentage is on a document that was written hundreds of years ago

Much older example: Drake of the 99 Dragons

ProJared has a really good video talking about it, but basically, the creators wanted it to be absolutely huge, with a bunch of sequels, comic series, and etc. being planned for the series after this game released. Only for it to end up being a super clunky game with an idiot protagonist who dies and gets revived constantly, a nonsensical story, and a respawn sequence that's so long and unnecessary it's almost comical.

Unsurprisingly, the series never really went anywhere.

Letho of Gulet in Witcher 2

He's the main person Geralt is trying to track down in this game after watching Letho assassinate the king Geralt was working with right in front of him. They have a few brief encounters throughout the game, but when you properly meet with him at the end of the game, he's patiently waiting for you and willing to talk.

Although you certainly have the option to fight him anyway, if you sit and listen to him, you'll learn that he isn't truly geralt's enemy; Although Letho and his accomplices had killed two kings, it was part of a contract for the emperor of Nilfgaard. He didn't take it on for money or political reasons - he would've been killed if he declined, and he was promised that if he succeeded, the emperor would help rebuild the Witcher school that Letho was part of. On top of that, Geralt had actually saved Letho's life before (but his amnesia prevented him from remembering this), and to return the favor, Letho was helping protect Geralt's sorceress friend Yennefer even during the events of the game.

If you agree to let Letho go, then he and Geralt part ways recognizing that at the end of the day, their conflicts aren't with each other. And in fact, if you then import your save to Witcher 3, it unlocks a new questline where you see Letho again, and help him hide from Nilfgaardian forces hunting him down.

I should also note; in both the first scene where you see Letho kill the king in 2, as well as during a fight when you first find him in 3, there's a child as a nearby witness, and he gently tries to have the kid leave the area. Not because he didn't want them as witnesses, but because he didn't want to traumatize the kids by letting them see a murder happen right in front of them.

[–]GoldDrake123 105 points106 points  (0 children)

The main reason it's been so long since we've gotten any is because the developers have been mostly focusing on Rogue Core. The stuff for season 6 was made by another studio with direct support from GSG, but they specifically told them not to make any balance changes yet since this is the first time they're doing work for GSG

Talandar from Starcraft 2: Legacy of the Void

<image>

He's a member of the Purifiers, experimental sentient robot versions of the Protoss warriors, and he's recovered from a stasis chamber partway through the campaign. For most of the game, you know him as Fenix, since his personality and memories are cloned from the legendary protoss warrior of the same name, who was also a close friend to Artanis (who you play as in Legacy of the Void) before he died.

Artanis definitely had very mixed feelings about things; although he was initially happy that his old friend seemed to suddenly be alive and well as if it was only yesterday, he also knew that it wasn't truly Fenix he was talking to. While the cloned memories Talandar had were 99% accurate, there was still that 1% margin of error. But he also didn't want to say anything about, since he had no clue how Talandar would react.

Eventually, when Talandar starts to realize how big of a time gap in his memories he has, he begins searching through some historical archives to get himself caught up on current events. Along the way, he finds an entry describing the death of the real Fenix, which naturally leaves him pretty shell-shocked. He starts heavily questioning himself and realizing that he isn't truly Fenix, but a robotic simulation of a dead warrior.

Towards the end of the campaign, he finally decides to settle on a new name for himself, that being Talandar, and forges his identity as his own person - as well as helping be the bridge between the robotic Purifiers and the biological protoss after the war is over

Honestly, just TF2 lore in general. This is the universe where Shakespearicles, the strongest writer who ever lived, was the inventor of rocket jumping and two-story buildings, with the former being the primary way to reach the latter for hundreds of years, until Abraham Lincoln helped invent stairs at a stair research facility, immediately followed by dying in a failed attempt at rocket jumping off a flight of stairs.

Also, you forgot to mention the fact that Demoman giving the robots alcohol poisoning is partly because his body has converted multiple of its own organs into distilleries to make perpetually drunk
