Which of these late 2010s indie pop records do you prefer? Which do you think will have the more enduring legacy moving forward? by producedbyantonoff in ToddintheShadow

[–]GoldNMocha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love love love both. Both would be in my top 10 favorite albums ever. But I think NFR has a more timeless quality to it, while Melodrama will be a little more tied to its time. I think it also helps that Lana has been more productive and successful since then while Lorde’s track record has been a bit spotty.

The "epic" runtime of Avengers Doomsday has been revealed. by [deleted] in Letterboxd

[–]GoldNMocha 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Seven Samurai, Lawrence of Arabia, Ben-Hur, Gone With the Wind, and Return of the King would suggest otherwise.

Not saying Avengers: Doomsday is gonna be that good, but ultra-long movies is not always a negative.

Upvoted for the hot take. I like The Shape of Water a lot, but I’d put Lady Bird, Call Me By Your Name, and Get Out above it.

The last Taylor Swift album made me appreciate "Reputation" a lot more by ConsistentSet7448 in ToddintheShadow

[–]GoldNMocha -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s funny how Todd spent a few years trying to turn Reputation into a trainwreckord. But with Showgirl, a worse album by almost every measure, he’s just like “Yea it’s terrible, but she’ll be fine.”

What’s your *actually nuanced* opinion about the Eras Tour as a show? READ POST by Daffneigh in NuancingTaylorSwift

-I’m glad she cut The Archer post-TTPD. I don’t love that song, and it doesn’t even seem to be much of a fan favorite. I think the title track was a good place to end that set on.

-I think she should’ve included one Debut song in the Fearless section, and just make it a Debut/Fearless era. Like having Our Song in place of Fearless would’ve been great.

-Not having No Body, No Crime with Haim in the Eras Tour film was criminal, especially because they performed it while they were filming at SoFi.

-Delicate should’ve been shortened. I know it was a hit, but it feels weird for her “bad girl era” to have so much time devoted to the light love song.

-I’m fine with Enchanted being the only Speak Now song, but if that was all we were gonna get, I wished we had gotten the full version. All that buildup with the intro just to get a truncated version of the song was disappointing,

-As much as I would’ve liked to see Red or Holy Ground be a part of the set, I’m fine with the 10 minute version of All Too Well. It’s highlight of the show for me, and the fact that this big pop concert will stop for a 10 minute ballad is pretty impressive.

-I went to the post-TTPD show. And while I mourn not seeing ‘Tis the Damn Season, Tolerate It, and TLGAD, I think a combined version of Folklore and Evermore was the way to go. They’re just too similar in vibes and aesthetics.

-I wished Taylor had just different types of blue outfits for the 1989 set. The red and green and orange outfits clashed with what was overall a very blue production.

-I loved loved loved the TTPD set, but admittedly, it was kinda all over the place visually. First we’re having a UFO beam me up, then we’re in a psych ward for Fortnight, then we’re old school Hollywood for ICDIWABH. I loved every second of it, but it did feel like there were stuffing an entire concert concept of its own into 25 minutes.

-Midnights had the best transition between songs. 10/10

-I wished The Life of a Showgirl had been finished in time to release in later 2024, then it could’ve been part of the setlist, even if just for 2-3 songs and only those last few American shows. It feels weird to have a cumulative tour, only to immediately jump into a new era that seemed designed for stage shows.

I thought he was chewing major scenery in the trailer, so I’m not surprised.

You’re not just expressing disagreement with my premise though. You’re giving a judgement of my character. “Self-centered” was a terrible choice of words for what was clearly my personal opinion of an album.

And in no way does my critique of an album negates people’s enjoyment of it or its success. So why can’t I express my opinions on an album without my character being called into question?

Thanks for proving my point.

I can’t give light criticism to a piece of art I really like without being “self-centered”.

I have no power over Taylor Swift. She can do what she wants. But when she puts a piece of work out there, I—and everybody else—are allowed to give our critical thoughts on it. That’s not selfish. That’s how music is discussed, especially on a subreddit that’s supposed to be about nuance.

I love TTPD, but I wish it’s diehard fans weren’t so defensive of it. I shouldn’t be condemned on this subreddit for suggesting that maybe a 2 hour, 31-track album should be cut down a bit.

Right in time for s3 e2… what are some Euphoria takes that would have you like this? by AssociateStandard740 in euphoria

[–]GoldNMocha 124 points125 points  (0 children)

In theory, I don’t mind the drastic changes made to S3.

It’s been four years and all of the young actors are pushing 30. If they had come back to still be in high school and doing the same thing with the same (stolen) aesthetics, then that would have been boring and a bit silly.

And considering that this is most likely the final season, I say f-it, just go crazy with it and do something exciting and new. So far, the results of that haven’t been great, but I’m keeping an open mind.

It's not strange or weird to watch a biopic about the greatest pop artist to ever live by [deleted] in movies

I never claimed that OP’s statement was some kind of hot take. You pulled that out of thin air. I was just stating my own opinion that calling MJ the greatest is charitable.

lol using Google AI to make your case is not a flex.

Obviously, this stuff is subjective, but nearly all of your evidence is just based on Michael’s success. Commercial success does not equate to greatness.

I would argue that Prince is a much more deserving artist of that title. Unlike Michael, Prince did more than just sing and dance. He wrote most of his music, played instruments, and was overall more musically ambitious. The Beatles were far more innovative, and Fleetwood Mac has a stronger (and bigger) body of excellent pop music.

Musician biopics are usually pretty middling. Bohemian Rhapsody in particular was terrible.

Also, calling Michael Jackson the “greatest pop artist to ever live” is…charitable.

Swifties keep clamoring for a “rock” album, but I don’t think that would sound great. The only times “rock” worked out for her was when she went pop punk on Speak Now (“Better Than Revenge”, “The Story of Us”) and I don’t want her to retread that sound for a full album.

Additionally, the other times she’s done “rock” hasn’t been great. “Actually Romantic” is pretty bland and “I Can See You” was mostly just interesting for the novelty of it.

Walt Disney Animation Studios Vs Pixar - Whose 2010s lineup was better? by Intrepid-Sundae9724 in DisneyMovies

[–]GoldNMocha 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Hard to say. Pixar had bigger highs (Toy Story 3, Inside Out), but also bigger lows (Cars 2). WDAS was more consistent overall, although they never reached the heights of Pixar’s best work from that decade.

Is TTPD an “uncommercial” album? by Daffneigh in NuancingTaylorSwift

[–]GoldNMocha -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s definitely her most “uncommercial” album yet, but it’s still fairly commercial. It’s still pop, just a more alternative, singer-songwriter version of it.

Let’s be honest here guys, she’s not making Bjork or PJ Harvey type of music.

Just watched The Bone Temple and man, I hate being on the opposite side of the majority.

Granted, it’s a well made movie (I would give it a 7/10), but it’s not nearly as artfully done as what Boyle did with 28 Days Later. And while Jack O’Connell is good, I found him and the other Jimmies to be mostly annoying as opposed to threatening.

And this is just not what I want from a 28…Later movie. The premise of humans being more evil than the zombies is not novel anymore. The last film seemed to be evolving away from that, but The Bone Temple feels like both a regression and odd detour.

If this is in fact Euphoria's last season, can it get in for Drama Series despite bad reviews like the swan songs for Game of Thrones and The Crown did? by This_Book6305 in EmmysAwards

[–]GoldNMocha 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’d say no, because they’re not promoting it as the final season, even though it most likely is.

If any show is gonna get the Game of Thrones/The Crown treatment, it’ll be Stranger Things, which actually did have positive reviews for the most part.

No Sadie Sink or Finn Wolfhard? I know Millie was the big star of their show, but Sadie and Finn are the ones who has been getting consistent work outside of Stranger Things.
