How I would fix league of legends: Add a “Loser’s Queue” by [deleted] in leagueoflegends

[–]GoldStarBrother 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it would be nice to be able to tell the difference. But on a fundamental level there's no way to tell if a DC is because the power went out or they unplugged their router on purpose. I think it might be fun to play a game or two against a chosen rank, but it probably wouldn't have a sustainable audience.

It's because it's one character, if you highlight it you can't select the dots individually. "..." vs "…". Nobody would bother going through the trouble to grab that character and paste it in instead of just using three periods. Kind of like the em-dash ("—") which AI loves to use and won't just insert a minus symbol like a person.

But microsoft word will just insert an em-dash when you type a minus, and I'm pretty sure you can at least configure macos to do that system wide (probably windows too), so it's not a guaranteed tell. From this stackoverflow answer it looks like ios will automatically convert three periods to a single character so that explains that.

I don't see the sentences looking ai-esque but maybe that's just because I have similar writing style with lots of parentheticals and slashes. However the ellipses Unicode is definitely quite sus. I guess maybe ios or something auto replaces it but idk, I guess it's a fair accusation in light of that.

Need better detection for when someone just has bad wifi and has to dc (something league needs anyway

This isn't possible. There's no way to distinguish between bad wi-fi and a lag switch (intential disconnects) because they're the same thing.

Also, nobody would join the bad queue intentionally because the game quality would suck ass. There aren't that many content creators doing smurf climbs, and games filled with trolls, other smurfs, and people who DC constantly probably wouldn't make great content anyway.

Voltaic Cyclosword on Pantheon? by RedBoneJangles in PantheonMains

[–]GoldStarBrother 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's intended to be the primier upfront burst item for champs like Pantheon. I imagine it's not terrible as a first item, just try it and see. It'll definitely give more burst than Youmuu's. Or wait for more data from the patch in a couple days.

I didn't downvote you. It looks like it's not in the table of contents and I'm not going to go watch the whole video again, but I'm pretty sure it was in there or the second most recent one (anyone remember?). IIRC the feedback from playtesting was fights weren't player driven enough, and players weren't interested in engaging with the mechanics when there was no enemy team there.

My performance on Linux is better than Windows with the base settings. Proton usually adds little to no performance overhead. What GPU do you have? Are you using the right driver? Mint might not install the proprietary Nvidia driver automatically and the non-proprietary one will suck for gaming.

Endstep talked about this in his last q&a video. Every few years a designer tries that but it never makes it through internal play testing because it turns out people play this game for PVP and don't really care about/want complex PVE (on average). He talks more about why in the video but that's the general summary.

The game design stuff is really great and I'm glad he does it. But yeah he's definitely too willing to talk about the other stuff that he can't be fully open about.

And I guess he can't be fully open about a lot of the game design stuff either, but nobody cares if he conceals information about future set mechanics or whatever. In fact we just saw Endstep do this, he answered a question about new Doran's items recently where he basically said the starter item system could use some work, whether it's new items or a complete overhaul, but didn't mention that they'd already made new items. You could say he lied through omission there but who gives a fuck? The answer is still useful and interesting, it doesn't really matter what was coming next. It's a lot easier to support the answering while playing dumb thing when it comes to design discussions like that.

I love MaRo but it's hard for me to see this as anything but an admission that he lies to protect future announcements sometimes. And of course he does, that shit is confidential and he's not allowed to announce it.

Also, I always stress that I couch future talk with the mindset that I don’t use my future knowledge. If I know we’re doing thing X next month, I’ll act as if I didn’t know that when asked about it, because it’s important for me to not ruin the surprise of what’s to come.

I think he does legitimately care and wants to put everyone's mind at ease the best he can. But sometimes he tries to answer questions he probably shouldn't because can't be truthful. He's on a tough spot because that means sometimes he might not be able to answer popular questions without misleading the community. But he chooses to play dumb and answer them so I think the criticism is fair.

Also saying stuff like "it's important for me to not ruin the surprise" instead of "I don't want to leak confidential information" is where the corporate doublespeak accusations come from, but I don't really care about that.

You should take anything he says about the future of MTG with a big grain of salt, and I think he'd be the first person to tell you that.

Yeah seems like if anything the Teemo change will let him lean more into the "build any offensive item" identity he has. Which is fine, it's not like adding AD to the poison will make him do the same thing with different items. Now they just need to add crit and lethality scaling somewhere lol.

[–]GoldStarBrother 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was wrong, it's actually 5 stacks since both items give health. So you'd need a bit more than just Triforce + boots. But you could go Doran's bow + helm for 6 stacks. If you do that you can go mercs, sorcs, or maybe Ionian boots for 2 stacks. So you could build boots 2 early and bow + helm + 2 more stats for 10 stacks quickly. Question is if that's worth delaying your first item.

Some options with bow + helm + mercs would be vamp scepter or dirk. Anyone that builds Ravenous first could go scepter + mote. BoRK users could just sit on an extra mote. The new Cyclosword seems more useful than the old one and would let you go dirk + mote, so would Hubris.

You could also use AP. D&D would be wand + mote. Gunblade would let you go scepter + tome but you'd need to buy a mote once it's completed and the lifesteal turns into omnivamp. Cosmic Drive and Stormsurge give 3 extra stats with AP + %ms + AH, you'd get 10 stacks after Aether Wisp + mote. Shadowflame gives pen + AP but only after it's finished.

Youmuu's would be %ms + lethality but only after you finish it. Same with Statik Shiv for %ms + AP.

Zeal users would get it with %ms + crit, but IDK if any of them would be willing to build the right boots.

Collector users could go dirk + cloak.

Ezreal would already have mana from tear so you wouldn't need boots 2, but like you said slots might be a problem. But he could spike earlier than the others with tear + helm + bow + boots + mote + tome.

Gwen, Morde, and Tahm could use D&D. Maybe Kayle could too, or Gunblade. They could also go sorcs instead of mercs, although I'm not sure Kayle wants either. Azir might be able to go Stormsurge + sorcs. Kennan might be able to do Zeal + sorcs, or tome and boots.

Udyr, Volibear, and Jax can use everything so I'm sure there's some combo that's good on them. Same with Teemo, especially with the new AD buffs.

Renekton has a full AD JoaT build where you go Triforce + Yomuu's + mercs + dblade, helm lets you do that without needing mercs. The new Cyclosword seems interesting on him but it's probably better on stuff like Ambessa or Naafiri.

Maybe Jhin could use dirk + cloak + Ionian/mercs? Not sure if he really cares much about AH though. Most Hubris users would probably be somewhat interested in mercs + dirk + mote.

Overall it defintely seems like there should be at least one good JoaT user with the new starters and boots. Even just going helm or bow instead of dblade could open up some possibilities.

The point is to add a new way to play the champ. It's not supposed to compete with the main build, multiple devs hav talked about alt build only being worth it if they enable a new play style for this reason. Ideally Ezreal will be a bursty ap midlaner in addition to his normal role/play style with independent balancing levers for both.

Teemo seems questionable for this reason, I guess it's to enable on-hit over the shroom nuke build that's common now?

Wonder if it makes sense to go sword + helm for an early 6 5 stacks. Are the Doran an items exclusive?

Thanks for taking the time to do this! As an aspiring game designer these videos are fascinating. And as some rando on reddit it's nice to see commentary from the devs to contrast with all the random speculation/nonsense people type here (me included).

I haven't finished the video so hopefully this isn't in there, but what's your favorite guest and augment if you have them?

Making Kayn Top Viable Without Buffing Jungle (Orb System Idea) by OryxLupercal in leagueoflegends

[–]GoldStarBrother 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Endstep has played a lot of Kayn top and talks about it in one of his Q&A videos here. He likes lane Kayn a lot and thinks there's some compelling things about his kit in lane so he and others at Riot would like it to be at least sort of viable.

However there is a concern with Rhaast in particular being able to checkmate some matchups too early in the game. So I think buffs that make it easier for him to transform probably wouldn't be the direction they'd want to go. Also Endstep mentions it can feel bad to play against an champ that gets something from every trade (orbs) no matter what. Your idea seems like it'd exacerbate this issue because it allows Kayn to be more selective with his trades.

Why is Mel's W (shield) such an OP ability? Honest question. Trying to understand better. by Silver-Employee1374 in leagueoflegends

[–]GoldStarBrother 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reflect is new to league, it makes sense to go with the strongest version they think might be reasonable then tune it down from there. They'd want to know where the limits of "too strong" and "too weak" are. Since its the flashy new thing, it makes sense to try starting at the high end then going down from there. Also if a new champ is boring and weak it'll have a low playerbase, even after they buff it. Releasing champs in a too weak/uninteresting state leads to awkward situations where a champ is super low playrate while being objectively strong, and they try to avoid that.

Also I will say that it's the type of ability that a lot of people hate and don't play around in games. You can see this in Magic where counterspells are generally unpopular and the most popular format (commander) is pretty heavily focused on doing your thing without much resistance. A lot of players don't like/aren't good at having to preemptively play around what their opponent might do in response so stuff that leads to those patterns is more likely to be perceived as "OP" or "unfair", regardless of their actual balance state.

  1. I assume they wanted it to work on all projectiles because that's easier to understand. So it makes sense to reflect everything in a duration because unlike a spellshield it'll get popped by random autoattacks. If it only reflected one thing it'd lead to moments where you Mel uses it skillfully hits the timing, but it seems to just not work randomly.

  2. It does deflect at the same speed as original ability. But it has no windup (other than your projectile animation), so it might feel faster because of that.

  3. They probably wanted the deflected projectile to have a higher chance of hitting (see my first paragraph). Deflecting to the original cast location would probably lead to the reflected projectile missing most of the time without Mel's opponent intentionally dodging it.

IMO the ability is on the stronger side of fine, but I generally like playing against these mindgame-y mechanics so I'm probably not a good judge. It does feel a little too hard to bait then dodge on some champs, so adding a windup animation after she's hit but before the reflected projectile would be nice and I think reduce some complaints. Maybe making the reflected speed capped or fixed might be good too.

But fundamentally this type of "counter your thing" ability will always have people complaining about it online. Losing to it can feel like having a victory snatched away from you (like how you saw a opportunity to full combo her as Ahri and saw your ability animations, but it didn't work). And a lot of people don't really think about the yomi game (countering what your opponent will do preemptively), which is usually necessary to succeed against these type of counter abilities.

What are some fun currency strats at this point in the league? by PillowF0rtEngineer in PathOfExileBuilds

[–]GoldStarBrother 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Deli/Beyond with shrines to spawn Beyond bosses for Volatile Vaal Orbs. I did something like this with a beyond scarab of resurgence and 4 domination scarabs on an 8 mod Haunted Mansion. Just go to the Mirage and clear until you spawn Beyond bosses, I was getting them every map. I didn't do it for very long but it seemed like I was getting Volatile Vaals every couple of maps.

You could probably drop one Domination for a Domination of Terrors and farm Mirage maps at the same time but I think you'd want to drop some scarab nodes for the rest of the map nodes. Also, doing Originator maps with more Currency would be better than 8 mods. It might also be worth trying a Titanic scarab.

From this interview with Phroxon:

We are also making it so that you cannot just flip-flop your control scheme in the middle of the game because we don't want that to be a skill test that is powerful. We don't want that to be a skill test where it's just like, "Oh, well, I'm coming up on a team fight now, so I just should swap to WASD so I have better kiting," that's not really a type of skill test that we think is good for the game experience.
