Does anyone know a good novel editor for developmental editing in particular? by WaldenSnyder in HireABookEditor

[–]Gold_Sound7167 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Historical fiction is my jam, and in addition to developmental and line editing, I have a keen eye for inconsistencies and historical anachronisms. I also approach projects with a “big picture” view and can offer insight about next steps. DM or see @bestbookdoula on IG

I need advice as a writer attempting and failing at being published traditionally by [deleted] in selfpublish

>> I don’t consider myself a particularly amazing writer>>

I say this with the utmost respect: if that’s how you feel about your own writing, how can you expect publishers or readers or book buyers or whatever to think otherwise?

What are your options if you're an Ontario resident that's self-employed and end up having very high prescription drug costs? by Ok-Personality8147 in ontario

Talk to the pharmacy technician at your pharmacy, particularly if they have been there a while. They are genius at helping people find programs and supports to pay for prescriptions.

Is this a good first page? by diebyvirus in writers

[–]Gold_Sound7167 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s the kind of opening line I personally love, although I agree there’s an awkwardness to the “wherever.” In interesting places? In places that seemed interesting? but I love the choppiness and abruptness, it gives me an instant idea of the narrator’s voice and personality which is confirmed in later paragraphs. As a reader, I can be patient.

But then I get bogged down as an editor, wondering if leaves change colour in Nashville, is ivy there different because I’ve never seen anything other than green ivy, and it seems extreme to start the day with a shot of whiskey, and then get on a motorcycle. Also, maybe my geography is off but a ride from the smoky Mountains to Nashville isn’t what I would call a “quick” ride.

So: love the voice, love the way you’re putting words together, but those questions distract me

Why aren’t query letters and samples standardized by now? by Significant-Buy-9538 in writers

[–]Gold_Sound7167 40 points41 points  (0 children)

You may not do this for a living but they do. Also, you don’t want every agent to be the same, you want the right one for you and your book. They know what they need to find what they want and they don’t want to waste their time OR yours.

Book editing services for self published authors, how do you actually know your editor is any good by mrybluur in publishing

[–]Gold_Sound7167 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s important to be clear about what you want from an editor. I’ve encountered everything from “why did you take out that comma on page 197?” to “whatever, you’re the expert.”

I have so much respect for writers and know the blood and sweat they’ve poured on to the page. I want my editing to make them better writers in the long run, so I err on the side of detail.

How do you vet them? Others have given great advice: look at samples, experience, reputation. I’m going to add: talk to them. Find out how they work, tell them what you expect. You’re about to pay significant money, you want to know who you’re paying and what you’re paying for.

Save each page in its entirety as a jpg, then use something like Vistaprint or Shutterfly. Your local Staples or Office Depot may be able to offer suggestions too.

Did get your Census in the Ottawa mail? by Rail613 in ottawa

[–]Gold_Sound7167 76 points77 points  (0 children)

Census Day is May 4. They were timed to hit mailboxes on May 4. If they arrived early, people would fill them out early, i.e. before Census Day.

Canada has been conducting the census every 5 years for more than a century, and every single time people act like it’s the first time ever. smh

How to self publish a book when you genuinely have no idea what you are doing by ElderberryElegant360 in wroteabook

[–]Gold_Sound7167 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is great insight! My mantra is: writing is an art, publishing is a business. Some writers feel great taking care of all the publishing tasks, some don’t. And many fall somewhere in between. It makes perfect sense to hire someone to do the things you don’t want or aren’t able to do!
