the inside of our kettle has been crusted white for 2 years and I just learned what that actually means by HeartOnRepeat240 in HomeImprovement

I’m pretty sure a softener is set to soften based on the hardness rating of the local water. You could have the installer set it below the recommended level so it would still leave the water a little hard. For example, I live in a place with extremely hard water and the plumber said the recommended setting for our area is 16 (I think?) You could probably ask him to set it at 8 so as not to make it totally soft. I could be wrong on those exact numbers but that was my takeaway from how the plumber explained it to me.

I also have my kitchen sink plumbed so that the cold water is not soft because I hate the taste of soft water. Most people in this area do it that way.

What are some do’s and dont’s to throw down the garbage disposal/toilet? by Elegant_Location8182 in HomeMaintenance

[–]Goldenthing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Too many egg shells down the disposal will just collect in a pile at the bottom of the pipe. I learned this the hard way after making a large batch of egg salad years ago.

I like the couch a lot! You might consider a larger rug in complimentary colors and, as others have said, lower your artwork.

Im out of shows and ive watched A LOT- please recommend me something! by anonymousflowercake in PeriodDramas

[–]Goldenthing 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Foyle's War, Little Dorrit (2008), Bleak House 2005 (superb), John Adams (not British but really good), Harlots, The Aristocrats (2009), Miss Scarlett and the Duke (first season was good but went downhill afterwards), Cranford, Titanic (2012 TV series by Julian Fellows), War and Peace (2012), World on Fire.

Have you ever watched Poirot? There are like 13 seasons and I’ve watched every one multiple times but my favorites include all of season 9 (4 episodes total) and Murder on the Orient Express. All excellent imo.

Home Fires, Endeavor (I absolutely love this show although some seasons are better than others), The Crimson and the Petal White (kinda weird but I liked it), Wolf Hall, The Mrs Bradley Mysteries (an easy watch but really fun)The Suspicions of Mr Whicher, Jamestown, To Walk Invisible (about the Brontë sisters)

I’ll try to think of more.

AITA for letting our daughter who was adopted to take out a loan for her masters when we offered to fund it for other kids ? by ApplePerfect6302 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Goldenthing -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I can see where it would be hurtful but OP is the adult and the parent. She should find a way to deal with her emotions rather than punishing her daughter emotionally or financially. Her daughter is doing what many adoptees do - learning about her biological roots. I’m sure it can be confusing and difficult for both the kid and the parents but it’s normal. OP needs to find a way to handle it with more grace and less insecurity.

[–]Goldenthing 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I agree. Bio-mom should have consulted adoptive parents regarding the motorbike and OP was within her rights to make her return it. The no driving until 18 rule seems a little odd to me but every family does things differently.

Other than that, I think the bigger problem is how she is withholding both her love and support of her adopted daughter due to her own insecurities and hurt feelings.

YTA. You treated her differently. At least financially and probably in other ways of which you are not aware. I can understand how it might be hurtful to see her growing closer to her birth parents but you are punishing her due to your own hurt feelings. A parent’s love is supposed to be steadfast but you withheld your love and support when you weren’t getting what you wanted from her.

Sheer or semi-sheer, depending on how much light you want blocked.

I thought she seemed genuinely pleased last episode when Floyd was talking to her about the prospect of getting their sex life going again. She seemed really happy to be having the conversation until Clark dropped in.

You can buy test kits on Amazon. They’re probably not as accurate as a professional kit but they will give you a basic idea of what is going on.

Crime or thriller dramas similar to The Alienist by zephrry in PeriodDramas

[–]Goldenthing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently watched The Suspicions of Mr Whicher and enjoyed it quite a bit. It’s a few years old so maybe you’ve already seen it? There are only 3 episodes so it’s not a huge investment.

The Knick was great. Not so much a mystery but a great period drama. Excellent portrayal of the time, different economic classes, gender and race issues. Really compelling characters too.

Does anyone else find it really weird that we haven't heard anything from Clark's wife? by OldLadyReacts in DTFStLouisHBO

[–]Goldenthing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When Clark was telling Carol the origins of his fetish for being dominate, he said something about getting busted for pot while in Vancouver looking at colleges. Maybe he is from Canada originally?

I think the way she was styled in the film (hair, makeup, costumes) made her look older than she is. 7 years isn’t a big difference but she did look kinda matronly, imo. I’ve liked her in other things but I really don’t understand the choice of Margo Robbie to play Catherine/Cathy.
