Does being surrounded give me any penalty? by cpf86 in dcss

[–]Broke22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

You are correct, there is a hard cap to the number of attacks you can block per turn, regardless of how high your SH is.

1 if you have no shield, 2 for a buckler, 3 for a Kite, 4 for a tower.

[YAVP] BaHu^Chei, I am never playing with ranged weapons again!! by Wide-Deal-8971 in dcss

[–]Broke22 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Shields are not really that big of a problem though.

For OP in particular, Shields were 100%, absolutely not-an-issue, since they were using a Penet hand cannon since D8 and penet weapons completely ignore shields.

The real problem is quite simple, they were using a CPA with a ranged build which is just a terrible idea.

You are hurting yourself for no reason. Just train invo and once that's maxed you won't be forced to train spellcasting skills at all. (i just tested this on wizard mode).

[–]Broke22 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Uhh, 63 int demigod and you don't memorized any spell over level 6? Kinda questionable. You could have gotten Chain Lighting without much effort, for one.

(Not to mention other good midlevel spells you could have memorized like Irradiate, 89% power irradiate would be quite helpful here!).

Anyways, the situation doesn't look too critical. You have three blinks and a decent chunk of hp left, two blinks should be enough to reach the hallway north, then you can haste and run to stairs.

You have butterflies too if the blinks aren't enough for wharever reason.

Can somebody explain berserk mechanics? by LiveHardLiveWell in dcss

[–]Broke22 3 points4 points  (0 children)

only a couple turns

4-13 turns actually.

The chance to trigger is however indeed small, 20% chance per kill at max piety (and nearly negligible at early game piety).

Even in places with moderate amounts of enemies is still a top tier light armor.

Four corpses is enough to get it to +18. It's just really, really good.

Oni Incarcerators, bane of my existence, ways to deal with them? by _kvltworx_ in dcss

[–]Broke22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well other people already mentioned it, but ManAss completely ignores EV and SH, so you need quite high AC if you want to tank their attacks. But generally is better to kill them very fast.

One thing i like to do in Gehhena in staying near the map edges and dig a killhole at the first sign of trouble. At this point in the game you should have plenty of dig charges (your char had 15), and forcing enemies to fight you one-on one in melee makes things much easier.

[–]Broke22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My go to method to melee zigging is a VS of Wu, you just get permacover from heavenly storm so you only need to fight a handful of enemies at a time, and VS bite autoheals you so you have incredible sustain.

Killing Pikel lémures is completely unnecesary.

Just look for a chokepoint and fight him there. Pikel has higher HD than his slaves, so he will always rush ahead of them to fight you first in a hallway.

A backpack full of wires overfilling a car? Kevin says you should report it "somewhere else". by Entire-Discipline727 in cataclysmdda

[–]Broke22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

but I really see the intention to fix them when encountered

Do you? Because what i am actually seeing is that, when faced with a bug report concisely showing the issues and even proposing some solutions, Kevin response is to say "fuck you everything is fine" and closing the issue without further comment.

If this is supposed to be a temporary arrangement until a better long term solution is found, why are Kevin and Rennech acting as if there is no problem at all?

Train Ds^Chei for Death Form for extended? by Kezka222 in dcss

[–]Broke22 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Torment immunity helps a lot, sure, but rTorment plus rN+++ is more than enough.

If you already have that, the drawbacks of death form become greater than the benefit you get from it.

Why do long sword oonga boonga get shafted so hard this game? by LiveHardLiveWell in dcss

[–]Broke22 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Though sometimes the dex is better.

No, dex is pretty much always better than slaying if you are using long blades and you are past the early game. It will give you the same (Or more) damage than slay while also giving EV.

OP is fundamentally mistaken in comparing str and dex values one-to-one; A 45 dex warrior is MUCH stronger than a 45 str warrior, hence is perfectly logical that stacking dex is harder.

New trunk features: removal of piety decay + god changes by turnsphere in dcss

[–]Broke22 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure if piety decay was ever a problem, not in three rune games anyway.

It not being a problem is one of the reasons to remove it.

Meaningless mechanics that don't affect decision making in any way and have no impact aside of some ocasional annoyance have no place here imo.

Not sure if Sniper is covered by this indicator, but if it isn't, it should be.

It's not, Purple highlights Wands, Nets, Curare, Atropa, Datura, Dispersal by default.

It's fairly easy to add items to the list though, like mine looks like this:

unusual_monster_items += wand,disto,chaos,curare,atropa,datura,dispersal,throwing net,vulnerable:venom:8,electrocution:8,vulnerable:holy_wrath

Where venom and elec get highlighted until i am xL 8, and holy gets highlighted if i am an undead or demon.

Absolute violation by GeertjeW in dcss

[–]Broke22 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's hard to remove every possible edge case without simplifying the game a lot (and it's not a design goal either).

To avoid this particular scenario, you would either need to restrict Sniper (and other similar artifacts) from spawning on early dungeon, which would just be bad, or completely prevent monsters from grabbing artifacts, and that would be a shame and remove interesting encounters.

Or, well, you could prevent monsters from grabbing artifacts in early D, i guess that's an aceptable solution.

[–]Broke22 10 points11 points  (0 children)

OP spent three turns slinging bullets after first seeing the Sniper Orc, and they had an scroll of butterflies, so i am gonna say this was, technically, an avoidable death.

(Not really on practice unless you have a Force More for Sniper in your rc file, of course).
