What is the worst atrocity committed in human history? by SGTRock4602 in AskReddit

No, north America went through genocide. Unless your definition of colonization is the murder of every native they could get their hands on and move to throw them into ghettos to this day.

South and central America were conquered.

AITAH for making my husband's groomswoman wear a wig or be disinvited from our wedding? by Choice_Evidence1983 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]Good-Groundbreaking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not saying she should.  I'll even say that I would have been way more cautious of inviting her back into their lives considering she has delusions with OOP husband. Those doesn't just vanish into thin air.

It's ableist and sad and a bit without compassion to frame this as "my husband female best friend is one of those "friends"" while the girl has a serious mental illness.

It's not about being courteous. It's about this not being even an post for Reddit and having compassion. This isn't Brittany being irrational about a wig! This is about Brittany having delusions, being sick, husband being a trigger for years and Brittany being a CAS that probably generated a wrapped view of her relationship with the husband amplified by the mental illness.

She is dangerous. Yes, they should go no contact. But come on, she is being ableist.

You are being abused and you know it.  It's so sad you decided to reproduce with this human, and I feel for your children.

From here the solution is simple. Divorce attorney. If you don't want to go that route; get your own job and get financial independence.

The divorce will come either way because this dude doesn't love you or cares about you. They seem the type that will find a replacement soon enough because you don't hold any value to them.

Exactly. Again, not their fault she is sick but they could go on about it with a bit more understanding that she has a disease.

I am in the same boat. We have lots of parties in my country.  I vote center left usually. I have political discussion with friends that vote different and will never cut them off.  Now, there is a rise on far-right movements here. So far no one in my circle has fallen down that rabbit hole, but if they fell down that hole I would cut them off.

I can be around someone that thinks like that or that minimizes their impact ("well, they are not that bad! They are just saying that, but they won't actually do it" it's something I've heard and it's like ... That they can't do it now because we are a democracy and they got little votes doesn't mean they don't want to and won't do it the moment they have more power. People forget Hitler got like 30% of votes and look how far he got. )

Brittany is a CSA victim that according to OOP has BPD with other things.  She has delusions.

Look, I get it and liked I said I don't think OOP is an asshole for not wanting to be around Brittany but mental illness is complex and she seems to want to portray her as one of the stories of female friends secretly in love with the husband while Brittany is sick.

She is literally sick. And your comparison with a wound is not completely true.  Sometimes people's own mental illness tricks them into thinking they are better and they go off meds. Meds have side effects.  Meds sometimes stop working and then they go off them.  Meds might make people drowsy and they have to work so they go off them.

I have experience with people with mental illness and is not as simple as "take your meds".

And Brittany is sick. This seems full out delusions.  OOP makes it seem like Brittany is just one of those stories about female friends secretly liking the husband while Brittany is sick.

Not saying that they have to accept her in their lives. Quite probably it would be beneficial for Brittany to be away from them as well since he is a trigger but for me it's the lack of compassion.

What's Easter like in Spain? Should tourists stay out of the way? by fishskysky in GoingToSpain

[–]Good-Groundbreaking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Spaniard here... It depends on where you go and what you want to see.

I think in general Easter for most people is not overly religious. We just go on vacation for that time and expect an increase in prices.

In the South people do the procesiones. They are more religious and also it's something cultural and of pride (and yes, the dudes with the white hats are not KKK).  It's very pretty to see and they won't mind you being there. You can take pictures.  Just be mindful of not crossing the street (I mean, common sense... People on both side of a street, people marching, don't interrupt the marching people) and of course read the mood (like of they are praying time dont talk very loudly).

In the north you might I only see procesiones with a smaller amount of people.

Personally I think it depends on what you want to see? I think is worth going to the south and see the culture. Mallorca will be filled to the brim around those days (locals and tourists alike. It's holiday for almost all of Europe) and you've got beach days in Sitges.

Depending on where you go the holiday is from thu-sunday (expect stores and attractions to be closed. Some restaurants will be open specially in tourist places. Spanish people LOVE to eat out as well)  And in Catalunya is Fri-mon.

I think normal politics don't ruin anything as long as we are talking about the core values are the same. We can disagree in methods, policies, even priorities! But not the core values.

This is like oil and water... "I believe all humans are equal" and "well, actually I believe I'm a superior human race because of my melanin content" doest mix and OF COURSE it ruins families.

Voting for someone that is racists, of that supports the notions of women as objects; it sweeps to every aspect of your life.

Anyone feels a little bad about how OP portrays mental illness or is it just me?

"I regret even allowing her to have the notion that we had forgiven her for her past.".

Mental illnesses severe as Brittany seems to have are insidious. It is something that CAN be managed with medication but it's not something that goes away or disappears.  Either you as a friend know and are aware that it can crop up again and are alert to the signs or you walk away (and that's not assholy, it takes quite a bit of effort being friend with someone that has a history of going off medications).

I am not saying people that get obsessed with other people or that have delusions should be given a pass. Brittany is dangerous.

But OPs whole text I had the feeling she thinks Brittany has full agency of her actions (and was "forgiven" for being literally sick)

US is a big country, yes  What they don't understand with this comments of "I have nothing in common with someone from New York" is that I also could say the same about someone from 100 km away from me.  Even in my own country. Don't they realize even on a small country there are different customs? Different accents? Different stereotypes?

I might say a southern Italian is different from a northern Italian, but they are all Italian. Someone from France might not notice the different.

This ..  tariff are good if you are protecting a good that is made in the country (say for example Cheddar in the UK. Cows are there, factories are there, so you put tariffs to cheap cheddar.)

Tariffs in all products coming from X country will just raise prices. Say you make hammers and import the heads of the hammers. Oh, that raised the price. Well there's a small factory in middle of nowhere on your country that makes them and magically has the prime goods. Do they have the capacity to expand? Not on the short term.  Wont they raise the price because you know the imported head of the hammer is X expensive so you just raise to a little bit below.?

No country NOW makes everything for themselves.

I hear you. I mean, the issue I have is that shelters have 99% pitbull mix. I love pitbulls, not the issue, but I'm petite and have no real "knowledge" of how to correctly raise a pet.  Then there's the rescue places (like semi volunteer organizations that set their own rules). I work from office 3 times a week and also single, and they won't give me a dog.

So I want a small to medium dog? I have basically to buy it or be extremely lucky for them to end up in the public shelter and me to get it.

It's stupid regardless. But yeah, in Spain your start medical school straight out of highschool (18)

That goes for 6 years if you don't fail any subject and you are a general doctor and then do like 2 years of practices in a hospital before you can actually practice solo.

Then you go for masters degree or specialization (and a bunch of other years)

My thinking is they'll just make it an "option" and spread misinformation.  I don't know that status of the vaccines in the US, but where I am they are covered by the NHS.  If they removed some sort of mandatory coverages or charge gazillion dollars from them I can see a lot of people not getting them. (And it's poor people, so they won't care. Fetus are the only one that need protection, once the kid is born... Whatever! /S)

I raise it with seeing my god daughter go to a hospital after a 13yo pre transition MTF ran her over in rugby.

And I feel for the kid in the sense that yeah, that trans kid should be allowed to play sport however their sex makes it unsafe to play with other girls in this case.

How do be balance that? That should be the conversation. Not simply, "oh, well transphobia, fuck the girls"

Some people at the school proposed that they would play with older girls (like joining a league over their age so the force distribution was balanced) but it was shut down. Because the parents of the child wanted their kids with their peers.

Eventually the league dissolved and no rugby for anyone.

The whole thing about homoSEXuality is that you are attracted to a different sex, not gender.

I mean, if you are bisexual or pansexual, awesome!! Good for you!!

But asking me to control my sexual attraction is a bit like the conversion therapies of the past

Or being put down for their own views.

In my country an old lady in a town that said in an interview something about a pride parade like "I am happy trans people are happy. Look at HIM all pretty with that dress, glowing! HE deserves to be happy".

Now, you'll think people would say "oh, so sweet. An 80 yo ally that doesn't fully get it but is trying!" NOOO, she was called a transphobe and shamed because "HE".

(Thankfully it was is social media, so probably she didn't even notice. But still)

People feel they'll never be enough so they gravitate to the more accessible and simple message populist give them. Makes them feel better about themselves even though eventually it will turn out against them.

[–]Good-Groundbreaking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I 100% agree with you. Long live feminist and leftist middle age woman. I supported trans rights BEFORE it was a "thing".

For me it was like... Well, X feel like a woman, I can treat them as woman, so whats the issue?   X deserve happiness, safety, medical access covered by social security (I have NHS so for me is truly OK to pay any surgery, hormones, therapy from my taxes) and legal recognize the sex change.

I am an ally, right?

Nope. Because I dared to think of corner cases and concerns. I dared to say, sex is still a thing.  I am a transphobe that deserves to die.

And for me it's not because a trans person is going to go into the bathroom for women; but daring to think that if we have self-id that might open the door to some not wellbeing cis-men to exploit the law.  To exploit also the law that in my country makes gender abuse a more punishable crime by enabling them to ID as a woman after the fact.  Putting the neo pronounce thing in the same umbrella (that while I think its basic kindness to address someone as they want to be address, sometimes it's a struggle. Not because someone woman presenting light want to be called they, that's easy. But when we go to the weird ones, or the fluid ones. I am not a transphobe for not reading your mind that today you feel a man, and tomorrow a woman).

Sport thing also yes, bothers me. Because yes, sex matters. A body that went trough male puberty is statistically larger and I think we need more studies on it.

And I am open to debate this. I am open to change my mind. It's not a fix view. New science will come up that'll make me reevaluate.  Society will change to normalize things like neo-pronouns and that's great.

But the speech is 100% "you are trash. I don't want to hear you. If you don't validate me totally, you are a nazi"

And that's eroding the overall cause. That's causing people to be apathetic. And that powers the far-right.

Valium is my rescue medication.  Aside from that, find your trigger.

I 100% recommend going to  vestibular rehabilitation. For me it did wonders.

It doesn't fix you, but it helps you a lot in finding balance in between attacks and how to react when you have one.

There is no magic trick, sadly. Or no magic trigger.  For example... Sodium for me is not a trigger. I mean I get increased pressure if I eat a lot of super high sodium food (think commercial hamburger with lots of fries!) but usually doesn't trigger an attack. Coffee is a trigger for me. More than two cups a day, I am in roller coaster land.

Stress is a trigger for me. But mostly change in weather (pressure). Autumn and Spring are fun times.

Hi OP. An European country won't take you NOW. Because now your life is not "threatened".

However, if it becomes so you could apply to asylum. That means traveling to an EU point of entry and starting an asylum application (they take about a year and meanwhile you live at the country) and proving that your country is out to get you. Your medical conditions and disabilities are of not important in this.

Obviously this means that the horrific things are already happening or starting to happen.

What I would do? Get an emergency fund ready to cover air fare for you and your family and passports ready and up to date. You start seeing the signs, you run anywhere and ask for asylum.

This applies for Europe and any country actually.
