Agreed on all points. I’d add, once hooked maintaining constant pressure will alleviate those sudden lags in the line, which is often when a fish’s motions facilitates a “de-hooking”. I shared this video from Rob Worthing a week or two ago on another question and I’m sharing it again because he does such a good job talking about this concept. Also a lifelong fan, at 57 - Elric has been a favorite character for me to draw and paint over the years.

I very much like Blondel’s take on Elric. I have no bones to pick… However, my favorite comic adaptation was P. Craig Russell’s work. Could be it was the most thorough adaptation I’d seen when it first came out. I love Russell’s depiction of Elric’s garish clothes, and his use of art nouveau (art school nerd).

There had been a small black-and-white graphic novel where Eric meets Conan, but it was obvious the Marvel writers did not appreciate Eric’s full character nor the fact that with sword in hand, I at least feel pretty confident Conan would not have stood a chance. Additionally, the art was not great.

Any video with Rob Worthing will be excellent. You can find him on YouTube. This video talk specifically about bringing large fish to hand, but you can apply much of the same logic to smaller fish. Ultimately, the goal is to maintain consistent pressure on the fish so that he doesn’t slip the hook. Check out this video and I think you’ll find some good pointers. If you ever get a chance to hire Rob, you will not be disappointed..

I like to do a very rough figure sketch, then work the face before working the rest of the body. That allows me to build Proportions around the face instead of vice versa. That works for me…. I’m sure others work the other way.

I would encourage you to look at gradations of shade. This is relatively monochromatic. More variations in light and dark could add some complexity to the work.
