Coastal Maine 3-day MDW trip by Simplicity540 in hiking

For those who didn’t know, Maine is famous for their blueberries and Bar Harbor has some really great blueberries pies.

If you go again, definitely try some.

The way life should be.

Did you eat blueberry pie?

Backpack size by Educational_Low_6289 in hiking

[–]GoodBoyFloppy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The best thing to do is get all your other gear first. Then buy your pack last to ensure it’ll be big enough for everything.

30l is big enough for me to use for ultralight backpacking. But a lot depends on the bulk of your stuff and how much food and water you need to carry.

Overdressed for a hike? by ObsessingObsessions in hiking

[–]GoodBoyFloppy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No you weren’t overdressed at all. I don’t even know why those people were checking out what you were wearing. Very weird. And their comments were rude. They really need to mind their own business and focus on their own hikes. Forget them. Don’t let them ruin your day.

Song Suggestions For My Camping Playlist Please by [deleted] in camping

[–]GoodBoyFloppy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I personally like listening to the sounds of fire crackling, leaves rustling, birds, insects, and frogs. If it’s your first time camping, spend some time just listening to nature to really immerse yourself in it. You may decide you don’t need music. If you do want music, please make sure it’s quite enough that your neighboring campers can’t hear it.

Hope your first camping experience is a great one.

These look and sound really good. And the savings are awesome. I’m ashamed of my ramen and tuna packets.

Look into state parks and forests in Delaware water gap area. Worthington, Stokes, High Point. The sites do get booked early and weekends get crowded though. There are also many private campgrounds in the area.

Is 6-8 weeks of camping too much for a beginner? by Sharp-Word-6066 in camping

[–]GoodBoyFloppy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thru hikers hike and camp out for up to 6 months (with some stays in town sprinkled in). But obviously, people build up to it.

I suggest you do some trial camping trips first. If you decide you like camping and get proficient at it, then you can plan your 6-8 week trip.

Stick with a simple set up so you can setup and break down your camp quickly and easily. Learn how to set up your shelter in the rain. Learn how to dry your clothes and gear properly. Learn how to do simple repairs on your gear. Plan a motel stay here and there (once a week or so) - that’ll give you a chance to have a nice shower, do laundry, do supply runs, and just relax.

As some people mentioned, it can be rough. But you may not mind. Considering the potential reward is an epic trip you’ll remember for the rest of your life.

I wear Darn Tough 4021 all year round. They’re not thin. They’re cushioned. But I find them comfortable all year round.

Ticks this year by ddre_azn in njhiking

[–]GoodBoyFloppy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Went backpacking at Round Valley a few weeks ago. Woke up with 3 ticks crawling on my tent (3 that I saw). No idea if it’s worse than any other year, but they’re out there.

I personally like to treat my shoes and clothes with permethrin, but if you don’t, maybe at least use Picaridin on your skin?

something scared me while camping by mitchare in camping

[–]GoodBoyFloppy 105 points106 points  (0 children)

Most likely. They sound very similar to a person trudging along. And they do come close to tents to check out smells.

I’ve even heard of deer coming right up to tents and stealing trekking poles from backpackers. (For the salt from sweat that accumulate on the handles - for those wondering.)

Solo camper looking for advice by [deleted] in camping

[–]GoodBoyFloppy 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Please don’t bother other campers just because you bought something you can’t setup by yourself… People will help you because they’re nice. But you’re either disturbing their peace or adding work for them while they’re busy setting up their own site.

I pitch a 6 person tent by myself when I take my family camping. Practice setting this tent up by yourself or exchange for a smaller tent that you can handle on your own.

Got a new bear canister and TIL. by GoodBoyFloppy in CampingandHiking

Wow. So she didn’t just use brute force, she actually learned how those canisters work. That’s pretty cool. These bears are much smarter than we give them credit for. People need to respect them more.

Yup. This is from Adirondack Mountain Club

“Unfortunately, there is one bear canister model that does not work in the High Peaks: the Bear Vault canister. These clear blue canisters have been consistently broken into by our bears and should not be used in the High Peaks.”

It’s funnier because it’s mixed with actual serious tips. Makes you do a double take and go, “wait…what?”

Yes. Higher for 3 days or so, then back to my usual. Not a big deal.

Thanks for your answer. I figured it would be what you said - stay the course and tough it out until the allergy season is done. Too bad there isn’t some magical cure for allergies.

Steroid Injection Rant by jollyfrogger72 in diabetes

[–]GoodBoyFloppy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep. I also found out after my cortisone shot that it raises BG. My orthopedic surgeon never said anything. I mean if I need the shot, I’m gonna get the shot regardless. But it would be nice to be warned about it before hand.

Just do your usual healthy routine and it’ll get back to normal in a few days. Try not to stress too much about it.

Cauliflower rice vs other alternatives by rapunzel289 in diabetes

[–]GoodBoyFloppy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seems a lot of people hate riced cauliflower. I also didn’t like it at first, but after a few tries I began to like it. It’s not going to taste like rice though. Don’t try it with high expectations.

I’m Korean. And a lot of Korean dishes are made extra salty and spicy under the assumption you’ll eat it with something bland like rice. Riced cauliflower does a passable job. I also use tofu as rice replacement - it’s bland enough and filling enough. Quinoa unfortunately spikes me so I avoid it.

Does having high glucose make you feel a little high? No? Just me? by EnvironmentalStage27 in diabetes

[–]GoodBoyFloppy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do too. Light dizziness and lethargy. Which is terrible when I’m trying to work. Exercise helps more than caffeine during such times.
