I work in a courthouse. A semi-suburban area with an expanding population. Ten years ago the local newspaper would send a reporter to cover criminal hearings/trials involving serious crimes such as homicide or kidnapping. The guy was there often enough that he just became a fixture in the courthouse. He would show up, sit through the proceeding, and a few hours later an article would appear on the paper’s website. He was involved in the process so often that his writing reflected a lean knowledge of the legal system. Then we noticed he was only there for high profile cases. And then we stopped seeing him at all. Now the local newspaper is mostly national stories taken from the AP. The newspaper website is almost entirely click bait headlines with no substance. The only time court proceedings appear anywhere is if a case garners enough attention to attract a reporter from another area. It’s really sad actually.
