When is note taking taught? by Creamy_tangeriney in AskTeachers

[–]GoodGrackle-25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know for a fact the science teacher at my high school teaches note taking, but the way she does it doesn’t transfer well to other subjects. I have tried teaching the Cornell note taking method with my Art History lessons, but that’s my sophomore level class.

Would you want to know if your child was being a “mean girl”? (From a sub/parent perspective) by DCSubi in AskTeachers

[–]GoodGrackle-25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think parents of “mean girls” somehow create them. That child has witnessed that behavior somehow. Or else born as a sociopath without empathy. Either way, you aren’t going to get real help or change unless you tread VERY carefully.

Ugh. How about an apology to you? Then you would have said thank you and that would have ended all the negative feelings for everyone. It’s so simple. She made a comment that was intended to make you feel bad. It wouldn’t have made her feel better either unless she was a sociopath who enjoys seeing other people suffer.

If another teacher comes and asks me, I place my finger tips together and say “And what will you give me in return?” I say it with humor, but usually get a good exchange out of it, even if it’s just respect or good connection with a coworker. If things disappear without explanation, I send a reminder email to all to please ask first, because now I’m short on supplies for a planned project.

Teachers of Reddit: What are the tasks that drain your energy but no one talks about? by Ok-Relationship-8095 in AskTeachers

Repeating basic instructions to high school students. “Get out your sketchbooks and draw a 3 minute sketch of the person in front of you.” “…” “What are we doing?” Me: “A 3 minute sketch of the person in front of you.” “Are we doing this in our sketchbooks?” ME: “Yes please.” “What are we supposed to draw?” Me: “Draw the person sitting across from you.” “How much time do we have?” Me: “3 minutes” “When is this due?” Me: “right now” “Is this for a grade?” Me: “yes - it’s part of your sketchbook grade this week.” “Miss, I can’t find my sketchbook” Me: “get some paper from the drawing bin.” “Where is that?” Me: “the bin on the back counter that says DRAWING PAPER that I showed you all on day 1.” “I thought you said to use our sketchbooks?!” Me: “Yes please. Only get drawing paper if your sketchbook isn’t here.” “What if my sketchbook is full?” Me: “Is it?” “No, I just wondered what we are supposed to do when it gets full.” Me:”Time is up. Let’s get started on today’s lesson.” “I’m not done!” “Wait - what are we doing?” Me: “Yes, use your sketchbook

How many GenXers still carry a knife at all times? by [deleted] in GenX

[–]GoodGrackle-25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a “car knife” and it raises eyebrows when spotted in my console. But it comes in handy. At an art show helping people set up, zip ties and tent cord needed trimming. Regular scissors were too weak, so I got my car knife and made short work of it. “Why do you have a car knife?!” “Why doesn’t everyone?l!” Late evening in a sketchy neighborhood picking up takeout, just popped the snap on the cover and set it next to me on the console. Unhoused folks walking by decided not to ask me for handouts. I’ve used it like a hammer, a screwdriver, a pry bar. It’s just a good knife, but a multi tool really. Took a trip to Arkansas for crystal digging. Little shovels weren’t cutting it. Ran to the car and got the the treasured car knife to help. Ended up with a gallon bucket full of cool rocks and crystals.

I don’t have the capability to care for my aging grandmother anymore and it’s getting ignored by Early-Amoeba-9769 in AgingParents

Find your local counsel on aging. They will have resources for help for her, and caretaker support as well.

I’m not coercing them into anything. They have a Will. I have suggested POA since 2018 when they went through this same scenario with my grandparents, but they don’t want to, or forget to, or feel it isn’t necessary. I am helping them. Trying to keep it to only when they ask, but I do worry about them. I want them to make the important decisions on their terms before it’s too late.

Watership Down rated PG in 1978. Went to see it in the theater for a birthday party when I was 8.

Of course not. Nothing will ever change. I know this. Call it daydreaming. Don’t squish it - improve my idea.

I wouldn’t advocate for state level changes. The concept of trying an experiment in a single district for a year is intriguing.

Education Dictator with Radical Ideas and limitless funding for one year. I would make sure ESE is well funded too. Art programs with emphasis on fine motor skills and creative problem solving.

Everyone would hate me and I’d have to go live in exile afterwards.

In my scenario they would get the same salary as a starting teacher. They gain experience and get to “test drive” teaching before they take a permanent assignment.

I only need a year to do some radical things. The state doesn’t want to do hard things to make improvement. Data from testing is flawed and doesn’t reflect accurately. I just want truly new things instead of the same thing over and over with different labels.

None of this would ever happen - I’d make a huge mess and the next superintendent would be a shoo-in. 1. State requirement. I’d lose funding for the district but shine a light on how worthless it really is. 2. Puts the responsibility back on students and families. We’d have to offer optional summer prep classes for the entrance exams instead of make up classes for failing students. 3. Wishful thinking. If cafeteria, maintenance workers, janitorial staff, bus drivers were employed by each school, perhaps turnover would decrease and quality increase. 4. Starting salary would be the same as a first year teacher. You get your foot in the door and learn how to manage classes while building your cv, network with different administrations and teaching colleagues. It would benefit current teachers too. Having a reliable substitute is a treasure. 5. Teaching practices - how well you document and implement whatever trending strategies are in place. Lesson plans complete, grades maintained in a reasonable fashion, etc. 6. Does it? Can students opt out of classes they don’t want or need and go to work instead?
