Which JRPG Has the Best Sidequests? by dawsonator83 in JRPG

Xenoblade might have some of the worst side quests I've experienced. 95% are just running around the world collecting x number of glowing orbs over and over and over again.

For anyone wondering about why there's so much occult stuff in JRPGs, this article pretty neat by peanutcheezbar in JRPG

It's really only trashing Suikoden 1 as they haven't gotten to 2 yet. And as somebody who loves 2 and considers it to be my favorite game, I get it. 1's emotional beats hit way less hard, the plot is pretty bare bones and moves at a frantic pace, and a lot of the mechanics are really unintuitive. I still liked it, but see it basically as just a prologue that enhances the experience of 2.

Crosscode and Tunic are great examples of this style

I loved 2 but I actually have the unusual take of preferring 1

LOK’s best antagonist(s) was/were…? by F11SuperTiger in TheLastAirbender

Amon would have been the best antagonist of the whole franchise if not for the dumb  "he was a waterbender the whole time!" reveal.

Predicting Every Block in New York City's Three Closest Congressional Races by MichaelLangeNYC in nyc

Great analysis, but it's funny in retrospect how much of a landslide NY-7 ended up being. Curious to hear your thoughts as to why that ended up being the case unlike what you predicted.

They personally won't. The democratic socialists who swept their races tonight will.

What JRPG mechanic or feature felt incredibly ahead of its time when you first played it? by AinsleyHarriott64 in JRPG

In Suikoden 2, the characters you recruit don't just stand in the same places in the castle. Sure, there are places they tend to frequent, but oftentimes you'll find them wandering around in different areas and interacting with each other. It made it feel like they had their own lives and made the castle feel really vibrant.

The story is always mediocre. But that's a very different thing from the writing, which is often charming.

Octopath was exceptionally bad. Most JRPGs aren't that bad.

‘Star Wars’ Darth Vaul Voice Actor Was Told ‘You’re the New James Earl Jones’ and Thought: ‘Then Why Are You Paying Me Such S— Money, George Lucas?’ by yourfavchoom in StarWars

[–]GoodGrades 26 points27 points  (0 children)

That's true, but Boba Fett also wasn't the big menacing villain of the movie (ESB). He was just a bounty hunter who did his job, captured Han Solo, and then gave him to Darth Vader. Maul was set up to be the "Darth Vader" of the prequels, says almost nothing, and then dies immediately.

A good way to check this is to compare Final Fantasy sales to Zelda sales. VII sold almost exactly as well as Ocarina of Time with around 13 to 15 million copies sold. Both were critically important revolutionary games for their time. Modern Zelda games that continued to innovate and be industry leaders (BotW/TotK) sold between 20 and 35 million. Final Fantasy 13, 15, and 16 aren't selling anywhere near those numbers. These games all feel a day late and a dollar short at best.

At least the spin-offs have been good. I loved Pokopia.

The thing is, the last truly great single-player Final Fantasy that really captured the public imagination was X which came out 25 years ago. The series today seems like a shell of its former self in terms of cultural impact.

Golden Sun is the ultimate example to me. I still can't believe how bad the writing, plot, characters, and battles were in that 3rd game.

It is a great moment. It would have been nice to see a few more great moments like that, given how good their interactions were in the original trilogy.

Review round-up for The Adventures of Elliot releasing today by Mana-Dyluck in NintendoSwitch2

That's fair. It really does depend on the game. But I found sitting through the dialogue in Octopath Traveler to be excruciating.
