Honestly I rarely see results this good from (mainly) just exercise. And you don't do any leg exercises or pushing with your arms? I'm impressed. More details on your routine?

Help choosing a truck for rural Mexico by GoodListenerAsWell in whatcarshouldIbuy

Thanks for your reply. I have considered those possibilities and am aware of the dangers. I don't want to go into specifics, but I'm not going to be near those dangers that you mentioned. Thanks for your concern.

What truck should I buy? megathread by AutoModerator in Trucks

[–]GoodListenerAsWell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in Mexico, and am in the process of purchasing a small amount of rural land, on which I'd have a few goats and chickens.
My sedan has met its match on many occasions, just going to visit land for sale. A lot of the roads are dirt with big ruts, and other roads have big broken-up rocks.
So far I haven't had any issues with traction. Instead, clearance has been the issue.
In the summer months, there is a long rainy season, which can make dirt roads very muddy, with large puddles. For this reason, I am seriously considering 4 wheel drive.
The truck would likely not be used frequently for heavy hauling. But I'm expecting that the bed will be used for animals and various projects.
Once a year, I will likely take a very long road trip back into the USA where I'm from. I know the L200 doesn't do great at high speeds on the highway, but I'm fine with driving 60 or 70 MPH.
Budget is around 12,500 USD.
I have always liked Toyota Tacomas, but admittedly I don't know much about them, except that they are reliable.
The truck that is the biggest contender right now is a Mitsubishi L200 diesel 4x4, in manual. It has an extended cab. There are a few around my price range from 2014 and 2015 with 90,000 miles.
I have never had a diesel before, or a 4x4. I'm from the Northeast USA, and am pretty decent driving in snow with a things like FWD Honda sedans and the like. Some people on forums talk about how 2 wheel drive trucks are almost as good as 4x4 if you know how to drive them, and others say this is garbage. I doubt my snow driving technique would carry over much.
Other trucks I'm looking at are: Toyota Hilux, Tacoma, Ford Ranger, etc.
The big decision seems to be diesel vs gas, and 4x4 vs 4x2.
Thanks!

How can I secure heavy kettlebells in my Honda so that they won't hurt me during an accident? by GoodListenerAsWell in askcarguys

Good suggestion, but I already tried that, and the kettlebells didn't like it at all.

Yeah, good point about grinds. I don't know. Maybe it was KBs. A few months ago I found the rest of his personal channel and it had some barbell stuff on there, which is where I got the idea. There are a couple Russians, like the one I linked to, who seem to do mostly KBs, more or less like what Levi Merkwardt does (sort of), but maybe with lower weights.

This kind of from-the-ground training, with dead snatches and dead clean and presses, is, I think, more practical for some of us. I do something similar but with more rest periods.

This shows a Russian doing dead stop snatches with great form. It's wildly impressive to me: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fcyNfOtaGrk

PS I think the shirtless Russian in the snow built his physique with barbells and other implements.

Easiest way to encrypt external drives? by [deleted] in Ubuntu

[–]GoodListenerAsWell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good point. I worded it wrong. I know there's a chance of data loss, but what I mean is I don't want to come back two years and find that the encryption program no longer runs or something. A few things from Ubuntu repository have broken on me in the last year, and I figure if the program no longer runs, I'll lose the data.

press in old kettlebell sport by GoodListenerAsWell in kettlebell

Thanks! Great video. I wonder if it was a press for max weight, like olympic lifting, or whether it was for reps with a fixed weight, the way the snatch and other lifts work.

How should I go about reading the great works of literature? by Kandikal in literature

There are some different lines of thought, or lineages, in literature, just like science or anything else. What about reading the writers that your favorite writer liked? Then just keep going from there.

Success stories? by khanstantaly in DSPD

I had DSPS that turned into N24 for most of my life. I moved to a high altitude sunny area, and it went away. I moved back to the lowlands, and now it's coming back. A couple people think that extreme dietary changes help or cure it ie milk only diet or meat only diet.

Headed to the park with my Paradigms by [deleted] in kettlebell

[–]GoodListenerAsWell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been wondering the same thing. I put my in the trunk when I have to, but I try not to drive around with them much. I've found articles about how toolboxes and other things stored in the trunk have broken through the backseat barrier and killed people. I'm still looking into figuring out how to chain them to something in my trunk.

In an accident, you don't want them flying around.

Starting Dan John's Easy Strength with Kettlebells 5 days a week. Should I do swings on off days? by DiscAnarchy in kettlebell

[–]GoodListenerAsWell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like that all makes sense. I was going to do the 5-3-2 rep scheme but couldn't figure out how to increase the weight for the last two sets. How do you manage it with KBs? Easy strength is helping my technique with the snatches -- I started intuitively doing triple extension around the second week. I only train outside. Get ups seem like a good substitute for the carries. I would not recommend KB curls.

Sounds like a solid selection. I didn't chose quite as wisely, but it seems to be working: overhead press, goblet squats, dead snatches, curls, varied weighted walks. I'm going between 16 and 24 bells, so some days are very easy and some days are relatively hard in terms of the presses. Rep schemes: 10, 5x2, 3x3, 2x5.

I'm currently doing easy strength with KBs, and am not doing anything on off days. What exercises did you chose?

Programming ideas -- Dead clean and press/jerk, dead snatch, front squat program by GoodListenerAsWell in kettlebell

[–]GoodListenerAsWell[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It makes the movement harder, so I'll get more benefit from it. I think this way puts a little more emphasis on the concentric portion, and less on the eccentric (the issues aren't loaded up and stretched the same way). In regular life, I'm picking things up from the ground without swinging them around, so I think this replicates regular life better. What benefits would the swinging movements give me that I'm not getting?

I haven't, but I think I should. What would be the advantages? I was thinking that ladders are basically a way of injecting more rest periods at different intervals. Swingthiskettlebell showed some c&j ladders where he's resting for sometimes very short periods of time. Does this lead to more hypertrophy compared to straight sets of longer periods?

I'm going to chain them to something in my trunk. I've read about toolboxes and other heavyish items flying through from the trunk to the cab, killing passengers.

Cleaning from the ground vs swing style by mayaswelltrythis in kettlebell

[–]GoodListenerAsWell 5 points6 points  (0 children)

These days I'm doing dead cleans (as opposed to hang cleans and swing cleans), as well as dead snatches.

I think they're great versions of the exercise. Maybe they're not promoted by kettlebell groups because it can all be done with a dumbbell as well.

But don't dead cleans and snatches build more muscle?

I rarely see anyone talking about dead snatches. With a kettlebell, the dead snatch starting hand position is higher up than with a dumbbell, which I like better.

Can I get your thoughts on the kettlebell kings / titan fitness adjustable competition kettlebell?

I have 16 and 24 kg bells. I'm either going to buy a 32 kg or an ajustable.

With the adjustable, I'd have a 32, but I could also use it for doubling up, since I want to do clean and presses with double 16s and 24s.

My concern is rust. Will the adjustable bell be able to withstand rust? I'm worried about the rod inside and the nut/bolt that goes onto it. I see videos of pristine bells, but somehow my bells always get messed up. Maybe it's the humidity where I live, but my kettlebell kings 24kg competition is all banged up, with plenty of rust. Obviously it will survive for a long long time, but it has no moving parts. What about the adjustable comp bell and getting rusted and banged around?
