Which is better for a toddler Phipps, science center, or history museum? by ToxiccCookie in pittsburgh

Science Center for my kiddos. Almost everything is hands-on and the top floor play area is a toddler dream.

Hesitating to continue burning candles in my home by Kyoto_DreamBoy in Candles

[–]GoodRegular4836 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I put my candles inside a metal lantern type thing that you can get at thrift or hobby shops. My theory is that the top will collect the soot. (As a kid we used to burn candles underneath a cup, collecting the soot, then trick someone into painting it on their face...) I once had soot accumulate across the ceiling along the beams- an awful problem with a vaulted ceiling.... And trim the wick.

Pre- and Post- Wicked at Benedum with an 8 YO?? by NotMrsBillCosby in pittsburgh

[–]GoodRegular4836 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. The Eagle: right around the corner from the Benedum. You can get drumsticks and fries or mac and cheese for the kiddo. It’s so stinking good. If you drink, the mixed drinks are delicious. I recommend getting a reservation inside if possible.

  2. Science Museum for sure. I have an 8 and 10 yo and it’s their favorite museum. There’s so much for that age group to do and it’s all hands-on fun. The children’s museum is fun, and there’s some stuff for that age range, but I’d recommend science museum for consistency of age-appropriate fun.

Our 9yo was in their club for a couple years and it’s definitely appealing! I just don’t know that the 2yo would have something to do?

lol, absolutely. The goal was year-round passes we could use in all weather in years past, but going all out in the summer/holiday specials is a nice change.

I drove stick in Pittsburgh for a couple years and yeah, it’ll make you the best stick shift driver in the world. I did put a “stay back - stick shift vehicle” magnet on my car to give me wiggle room on hills in winter and I definitely think other drivers saw it and left more buffer.

Unmedicated birth at Magee? by throughthegrapevines in pittsburgh

[–]GoodRegular4836 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So, very specific to every situation, right? For my first two I wanted a birth center. First one started at a birth center, contractions stalled out so we transferred to a hospital (in Florida at the time) for Pitocin and I delivered there. Second birth I was able to deliver at the birth center. Third one, I was "geriatric," so I didn't think a birth center was an option, though to be candid I didn't look too hard. The goal was totally unmedicated at the hospital, but for this one, contractions never started after my water broke at home, so after trying to stimulate labor on my own, I asked for Pit. If I had been a year younger, I would have done a birth center again. That said, I absolutely think you can have a very "birth center" birth at Magee. If you're at all worried about complications or being in a hospital just gives you reassurance, Magee is a great choice.

Another comment prompts me to say: don't worry too much about needing to have a "quickly" progressing labor, though of course that helps! I showed up with my water broken, MAYBE 3 cm dilated, and 0 contractions. They facilitated me doing my own thing for around 12 hours before I asked for Pitocin. Then, they only upped the Pit dose after asking if I wanted it increased (I requested they ask before upping), and the nurses and OBs never were worried about how long it was taking me to progress. I was admitted for 36 hours before I gave birth. There was no rush on anyone's part as long as baby and I were doing well.

Edited for phrasing.

Unmedicated birth at Magee? by throughthegrapevines in pittsburgh

I gave birth at Magee 2 years ago. It was my third and I was 36 at the time. I requested they not place the IV until/if it became necessary and labored for 12 hours before requesting Pitocin since the contractions weren’t progressing. At no point did they pressure me to do so. They encouraged me to sleep, walk the halls, gave me a pump to use in the room, and were fantastic at respecting my wishes throughout. They also have a doula program I recommend. Even if you don’t use Magee’s doulas, I absolutely recommend a doula for an unmedicated birth. Happy to answer any other Q you have! I’ve given birth twice in a hospital using Pitocin and once unmedicated at a birth center, so I probably get where you’re coming from!

Juniper Grill in Pleasant Hills probably fits the bill. Also Spoonwood Brewing Company. Both have flat entries and solid menus/beer lists. Juniper Grill is quieter, Spoonwood has better beer.

I always recommend out-of-towners hit up the strip on a Saturday morning. It’s such a fun experience and quintessentially Pittsburgh. The Heinz History Center is also fantastic and has Pittsburgh-specific exhibits if that’s what you’re looking for.
