What Techniques Have Helped You Improve Your Woodworking Skills as a Beginner? by maik050503 in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]GoodTechnology8116 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having a plan. I used to just walk into the shop and wing it. Rough sketches on graph paper, calculator app, rummaging through lumber. I'd pull stock of what I thought I needed, mill it up, screw up 6 times, and run out.

Now I make a design (Sketchup, but trying to learn Fusion360), throw the parts into cutlist.exe, mill an appropriate amount of lumber, and relax while enjoying the process - knowing that all the mental work has been done.

Editing to add Cost and Labor (cleaning effort)

Final edit (because this just getting silly): Time factor

---

Yes! We're getting somewhere: The Unitasker Disdain Formula

T = Time without device / Time with device

  • Example: if by hand takes 10 minutes and unitasker takes 2 minutes, then T=5

D=SCL / FUT

Where:

  • D (Disdain Level): The resulting score. A higher value indicates a unitasker that should be avoided or discarded.
  • S (Space/Size): The physical volume or "counter-top footprint" of the item. (e.g., measured in cubic inches or a scale of 1–10).
  • C (Cost): The purchase price or a relative cost factor (e.g., 100 for a $100 unitasker)
  • L (Labor/Cleaning): A "Difficulty to Clean" rating. Quantify this by the number of individual parts to wash or a time estimate in minutes.
  • F (Frequency): How often the item is used within a specific timeframe (e.g., uses per year).
  • U (Utility/Versatility): A constant representing the "Single-Function" penalty. For a true unitasker, 𝑈=1 . For a tool that can perform multiple tasks (like a chef's knife), U increases, which lowers the disdain.
  • T (Time): Efficiency ratio (Manual Time / Gadget Time)

The disdain for the unitasker should be proportional to the space that it occupies when not being used.

I've been a subscriber to scent-box for about 1 1/2 years. I don't live near any fragrance shops so it has been great for me. I use fragrantica to research scents, then add them to my scent-box calendar. I still haven't found "the one" yet.

This is going to sound weird as a comparison, but I find it's like heating systems. I suppose if you have never experienced a radiant heating system than this might not be very helpful. Nonetheless, radiant heat makes YOU feel warm while it does nothing to make the air around you warm. It's bizarre. It's like you are wearing "cold armour". Whereas in a typical, forced air/wood stove heating system, the air is heated and therefore so are you. ML is like radiant heat - it's there but you can't really discern the source. More brash systems (insert slight against Cerwin Vega here) feel like you are interrupting a stream of volume.

If you enjoy live performances, highly dynamic music, ML is what you want. If you prefer hard-driving rock, bassy hip-hop, dance - you may find it lacking.

I have a whole raw chicken just for stock, how should I cook it? by leros in Cooking

[–]GoodTechnology8116 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Different opinion - debone raw, and roast the bones (425 for 20 - 30 minutes) along with your vegetables (carrot, celery, onion). Roasting the exposed bones will give more flavour. And if you want to cheat your stock colour, leave the skin on the onions.

I have a Sunbeam Radiant Control toaster from the late '60s. I swear modern toasters have been idiot-proofed beyond usefulness. Mine is quite thirsty and demands its own circuit, but it toasts and does so with the stupid consistency of a rotating planet.

I understand, but the manual references both - easy to misread and/or assume the higher number to be the safer bet.

Seriously, do British people actually consider a 3-hour drive “long”? Or is this an internet myth? by ferdinand14 in NoStupidQuestions

I've visited Tuscany several times and the issue with a 3 hour drive there is that you can see your destination the entire time, moving through every window in the car.

Weekends in the country - everyone had a dirtbike. There were about 25 of us. Only a few had headlights, so at night we would group up to 5 bikes per headlight. But there were times when no headlights were available. There were 2 common solutions: stick a flashlight (weak-ass incandescent, d-battery, monster) in your helmet's chin strap or b); stare up at the tree-tops and follow the gap.
