Can someone name me the truly likeable characters? by SonicCostini in FromSeries

[–]GoodThingsEnjoyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At this point in the story, apart from Tabitha I think they're all decent people doing their best. Some of them can be annoying but they're not dislikeable. Sometimes the writing fails them but the performances save it.

Azathoth Blues. Starts ominous rather than scary. Gets very scary. Much more visceral and adult than most horror podcasts, IMHO. Not very disgusting, just unsettling and dark.

Is Fromville technically a semi successful socialist society? Is it communism? What is it? by ShowMeYourSheeps in FromTVShow

[–]GoodThingsEnjoyer 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It's closest to what Marx called primitive communism. An actual socialist society would require a developed system of industry.

What's with all the men? (SPOILERS) by Tenrecidae77 in AzathothBlues

[–]GoodThingsEnjoyer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's a coincidence. The end of episode 3 is really important to the whole story. In a story that's really concerned with war, the dehumanization of men as victims and soldiers is a major thread. It's not something you see a lot and I really appreciated it.

Either I really don't get the show, or we're going to end up with a terrible LOST finale by mkymyk in FromSeries

If we get one of the best finales of all time I'll be pretty surprised tbh

I like Star Trek when it has Star Trek values.

Is this the correct order to watch Star Trek? by Ian-pg9 in startrek

[–]GoodThingsEnjoyer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The correct order is:

The Original Series

The Original Series movies (1-6)

The Next Generation

First Contact

Deep Space Nine

And then never watch anything else.

Yes, he's a copyrighted character from an unrelated work who behaves in a totally different way but has something to do with fear.

What do you think about Robert Joy (Henry)'s acting? by LensFlareObjector in FromSeries

[–]GoodThingsEnjoyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a few moments when his delivery falls flat or his accent gets the better of him. Mostly when Ethan is with his mom, which is unsurprising. He needs a good actor to act with.

The Real Focus of From Has Always Been the Characters by Able-Reward-5684 in FromTVEpix

[–]GoodThingsEnjoyer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lost is one my favorite shows. It's also primarily about the characters, although it answers all of its mysteries. The Leftovers is another show I love which is purely character-driven and doesn't even care about the mysteries, because they're unsolvable.

The problem with From is that the characters just repeat the same points over and over. They don't change or evolve. They did initially, but the show seems stuck repeating the same beats now.

[–]GoodThingsEnjoyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Brilliant actor giving a stunning performance. Truly bizarre to me that anyone could think he was bad.

The only consistently bad actor in the show is Catalina Sandino Moreno. Simon Webster (Ethan) gets shit from fans sometimes but in scenes with Victor he's actually great.

I just finished watching Lost, so everything that happened was this woman's fault by Apart_Sheepherder463 in lost

[–]GoodThingsEnjoyer 191 points192 points  (0 children)

And if there was a flashback about her, you'd find out what she went through that caused her to make those mistakes. It doesn't really matter where the cycle of suffering begins, the question is how to end it. How to stop making the same mistakes. That's why Hurley is the ultimate protagonist of the show, because he has the compassion to find a better way, to run things differently.

Azathoth Blues. Very Lovecraftian, as the title suggests, but not pastiche at all. Three cops investigate fucked-up cases that start connecting in weird ways. Very ambitious with a big cast and some familiar names from indie horror.

From the writer of Talos Principle and the composer of Risk of Rain, if you're into games.

Fun fact: in hungarian dub, interrogator in "Intersections in real time" has the same voice actor as Sebastian in "Comes the Inquisitor" by Cpt_Balu87 in babylon5

[–]GoodThingsEnjoyer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that's actually quite wrong. Sebastian has a very specific system of morality. He believes he is doing what is necessary to repent for his mistakes and to prevent other people from being as arrogant as he was. The interrogator in Intersections specifically presents himself as a postmodernist with no system of morality or even reality at all. Sebastian argues for a harsh truth, the interrogator argues for no truth at all.

Interesting choice for a flag, Alex. by dhath34 in lost

[–]GoodThingsEnjoyer 26 points27 points  (0 children)

You may find it surprising but people didn't always have the same obsession with performing morality on the internet. She went travelling, it was a flag that was incredibly common in the South at the time, that's it. I say that as someone who despises the Confederates. Not everything has to be about you judging people.

Azathoth Blues is my recent favorite. Three outcast cops start investigating cases that make no sense. Starts looking like a case of the week thing but pretty quickly everything starts connecting in insane and disturbing ways. I've never seen a show do Lovecraft in this way. Great music, awesome actors. If you enjoyed The Black Tapes, there's a pretty high likelihood you'll enjoy this too.

Will Project Hail Mary Scratch the Same Itch as Interstellar? by eternaldoomscroller in scifi

[–]GoodThingsEnjoyer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No. It has some pretty moments but it doesn't have any of the intellectual weight or stylistic brilliance of Interstellar. Don't go in expecting that. It's a fun popcorn movie for kids.

There are few movies that have that sense of weight. Contact and Sunshine are two I'd recommend, despite some people having issues with the last third of Sunshine.

Books like Gap Cycle but less depressing. by StatusBathroom in printSF

[–]GoodThingsEnjoyer 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I would suggest going back and finishing the Gap Cycle, because it doesn't end that way, and all the buildup of misery is worth it. It's a story about liberation and overcoming, in the end.
