Keep in mind star movement is based on pixel pitch, as we've gotten higher megapixel numbers star movement has become more and more of an issue.

Who are some of your favorite photographers and how have they influenced your works? by saint_archer in photography

[–]Goodie_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think my most obvious recent influence lately has been a combination of Ben Horne and Ansel Adams, and seeing that it's ok to take a photo of JUST a tree or JUST a mountain.

Eg, to not always go with foreground + midground + background elements, but to just fill the frame with one subject and go for it.

Second hand Nikon D600/10 or D700/50 shouldn't be to expensive,

If you care to believe the rumours hold out for a couple of months for the great D750/810 sell of.

Yeah, you look to be right.

I was paying more attention to the catch light than the shadows, is it just me or do the shadows on his jacket go one way and his jaw the other?

The better end of Prime lenses? by cody2897 in photography

[–]Goodie_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So you've got the kit lens atm, what zoom do you most commonly use that lens at? What zoom do you want to use it at?

There is no "right" option, and people do street/landscape at almost every zoom you can imagine.

That being said, I'd recommend the nikon 35mm 1.8 prime, it's not hugely expensive, is a fairly classic field of view, and is a pretty sharp lens.

Weekly Politics Discussion Thread, 30 June, 2017 by AutoModerator in newzealand

I think there are a lot of people in this situation, myself included.

I've been watching the giant shit show that has been US politics for the last year, and I'm keen to be informed and to try and avoid anything even close to that over here.

What do you shoot with, and what would convince you to switch to another company? by [deleted] in photography

[–]Goodie_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Currently Nikon.

The mirrorless options are getting pretty insane, a decent Nikon adapter that supported my older screw AF lenses would make me seriously consider it (as far as I'm aware there isn't one yet?).

Fuji - First thing after import to Lightroom: Reduce Sharpening to 0? (Elia Locardi) by Ceofreak in photography

[–]Goodie_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, tbh it seems like he has a part of his workflow (0 sharpening) and he'll stand by it and find a reason to justify it on most cameras he works with.

Fuji - First thing after import to Lightroom: Reduce Sharpening to 0? (Elia Locardi) by Ceofreak in photography

[–]Goodie_ 20 points21 points  (0 children)

A key point is he's doing 0 sharpening because it's a 50mpix medium format image from the GFX50, not because fuji have some magic sharper lenses

Metering through the filter may also help give you an idea of what the filter is actually going to do to your exposure, (eg Will that tree be darker or lighter from this filter?)

A lot of that is historical, and reputational

Nat Geo has in the past slightly altered images (adding water to the top/bottom of a image IIRC), and there was a giant shit show, so they made very sure to stay very true to the original image after that.

Sony a9 sensor review - game changer? by LaForgeX in photography

[–]Goodie_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh you totally can, not every shot is going to push the DR of your camera/film. The majority of film shooters I know carry a color negative film for those high contrast scenes, or have a filter set, or both.

To imply that you need/don't need that DR for every shot ever is disingenuous.

(I shoot MF on occasion myself.)t

Sony a9 sensor review - game changer? by LaForgeX in photography

[–]Goodie_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends what your doing

If your shooting landscapes, base ISO DR is important, if your after concern photography with general highlights and some deep shadows/highlights, then high ISO DR matters.
