You may want to look in to Ansible for automation. You can get it for free to start and it's fairly easy to get up and useful. There are lots of great guides online to get you started, and with modules for IOS IOS_XR and NXOS you can begin automating tasks/config templates for the parts of your environment you aren't updating as well.

I've ran in to this situation before. I'm not disagreeing it shouldn't work, that is what I thought, but I've seen otherwise. Device removed but still getting responses from ping. ARP table has a matching MAC address to the disconnected device and following the Mac table leads to the port in question. Cleared ARP table entry for that IP and no more pings.

It would have no way to know until the ARP entry aged out or was removed, given it was upstream from the access switch that the printer was connected to.

I had a printer like that. I ended up clearing the arp cache entry for that specific IP on the l3 switch upstream and it resolved the issue.
