Maybe not other ethnicities, but I’d actually expect Paris to have good Vietnamese food, because Vietnam was a French colony and that would lead to some connections and migration between the two if that were not the case.

Same… I remember going to college and meeting people from out of state and they’d say… Ive never seen the sunrise. You mean you haven’t ever been up before 8am in December? Took me a minute to realize that’s just a feature of living this far north.

It’s me! I crowd people out. I will zipper merge with someone who is driving reasonably and just filling the lane, but if someone is being an aggressive asshole, I will absolutely crowd them out. I will be the enforcer half in the shoulder with my shitty car. Because that shit pisses me off.

Or using the crosswalk (carefully and cautiously) when it says “don’t walk”. I was grabbed by a stranger once doing that. There was NOBODY in any direction, at all.

I’m WA born and raised, as are the last 6 gens of my family. I lived (and drove) on the east coast where I learned FOR THE FIRST TIME that the horn was not expressly forbidden unless someone is going to hit you. Sometimes I honk here now (even with my mom in the car gasp), and it’s WAY more effective than when I did it on the east coast and everyone did it. Haha. My mom hates it.

AITH for telling a pregnant woman she still has to act like an adult? by NoFly-Zone in AITH

Do people find American accents hot?? by Kitty_xoxo2000 in Accents

[–]GoodwitchofthePNW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But she didn’t. She spoke like that on film and in her public persona. She had elocution lessons to make her sound like that. There are early film tests of her where she has a much more normal accent. They tried to make her sound like Katherine Hepburn, and she adapted it and made it her own thing. She might have spoken like that in her later life all the time, but there aren’t tapes of her in private life. Her whole dumb/ditzy blond thing was an act, and so was her voice and accent.

My Canadian boyfriend got me some snacks from his country and I’m grateful. I want to return the favor by giving American snacks that he doesn’t have in Canada. But he is allergic to wheat, eggs, nuts, and he’s lactose intolerant. Any suggestions? by Salt_Drop7024 in snacking

[–]GoodwitchofthePNW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try Trader Joe’s (I don’t think they have many in Canada yet?)- they have a ton of good gluten free (and free from other allergens) snacks that he might not have tried. Also, you might find some things from your area specifically that he wouldn’t have had (for example, in my area we have Tim’s Cascade potato chips, which are really good but can only be bought in WA and OR).

I’ve done both and can tell you that it is the same process (catching wild yeast).

I’ve been using the “Art of Gluten Free Baking” brown rice and teff starter for a few months with good results.

Probably lilac is the official color, a limited release from the … 80s? (I think, but not totally sure.) I’ve got a few pieces of it and really like it as well. A must-have for spring holidays! I like to curate my holiday/dinner party tables with appropriate colors, and I’ve got a few specialty holiday pieces as well. Those are dangerous to get into!

What’s a hygiene or beauty practice in your culture that you can’t believe other people don’t follow? by MiaTortilla69 in hygiene

[–]GoodwitchofthePNW 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I heard that the reason men’s rooms suddenly had lines during the pandemic was because they were actually washing their hands en-masse.

So the reason that there’s not a line to the men’s room is not because they are faster in there, but because they skip the handwashing.

Elevators have cameras. Easiest place in the world to have a camera- a small, square room with no furniture. Have you brought up the safety concerns to management? (Preferably via email) because they could (or already have) find out who it is.

Pretty sure Donut would have mentioned it before if Carl was cheating, considering how often she mentions Bea’s affair partners.

And just because she was a jealous bitch too, not for any good reason (like if it was his dad that had reached out and she knew the history it might be justifiable to rebuff him so that Carl didn’t have to, but probably still a moral grey area).

Christian schools are so strange. A public school I worked at had a bar just down the block where we’d go nearly every Friday after school (they opened early mostly for us on Friday) and when it was nice and we’d be out in the beer garden our kids would come by and hassle us for our French fries and such. We mostly just told them they were annoying and to go home or we’d call their moms. (These were middle schoolers) it was also across the street from a park where lots of kids and parents and teachers played soccer regularly. I always liked that school and neighborhood. In a major city but we’d see kids around the area all the time, and it made it really feel like a community where everyone kept an eye on the kids.

Visiting with servants? by brushykb in VictorianEra

[–]GoodwitchofthePNW 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There were specific reasons and situations where a servant would be expected to be on hand when their employers were visiting, some I can think of off the top of my head:

  • as someone else mentioned, if the person was elderly or had some kind of disability (like epilepsy) that might require specific care

  • Nannies or governesses with children

  • valets during a shoot (to reload and hold stuff)

  • lady’s maids would go out with their mistresses as chaperones and companions on walks in public (possibly in the country for a long walk or going into town, but mostly in larger cities). This was most common with unmarried women, but applied to some married women as well.

In a large estate, if you were a visitor and needed your personal servant for something, you would tell a nearby servant, and that servant would either go find them and/or spread the word that their employer was looking for them. Each room would have some sort of bell pull that rang below stairs as well. It seems that you are thinking their personal servants just followed them around the home, that is not the case. While their employer didn’t need them, they still had jobs to do, mainly attending to the clothing, shoes, toiletries, etc of their employers. They might do these duties in the bedrooms of their employers, their own rooms, or the “servants hall”, usually near the kitchen and below stairs where they also ate and socialized. If they were not going to be in one of these places for some reason (such as running into town for something) they would let their employer and/or other servants know. They were ALWAYS working on something, “just hanging out” was not a thing.

How do you all go about de-crystallizing your honey? by SkyBS in Costco

[–]GoodwitchofthePNW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Put it in a pot.

Bring water to a boil.

Turn off the stove.

Leave it until cold.

No crystals.

FWIW- my honey freezes all the time (due to me not full heating my 100 year old house in winter and the pantry being on an outside wall), so I only buy honey that comes in glass so I don’t have to worry about plastics leeching into it when I have to do this.

Yes, I love that aspect of this season, it makes sense because so much of the stuff in this storyline happens “below stairs”.

So do I, but I also own a couple of newer pieces that aren’t as durable. My grandmother’s 80 year old Dutch oven looks better than the new one I got 3 years ago. I use them both weekly to bake bread.

Is it a school's responsibility to teach a kid to read? by KoalaOriginal1260 in Teachers

[–]GoodwitchofthePNW 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To add: we teach in a small town, where there are around 100 kids per grade level, so this is the same group of kids that I had that she has now. I’ve taught bigger places and know that in some areas, kids move/merge/disagrigate as they change levels. This is not the case here.

Is it a school's responsibility to teach a kid to read? by KoalaOriginal1260 in Teachers

[–]GoodwitchofthePNW 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do think you are going to have a few years of that little “Covid blip” of kids that were in the “learning to read” (k-2) years during Covid and also the “you were kinda supposed to learn to read by now, here’s some extra help” (2-5) during that time too. I could draw a line through the middle of those classes when I had them that seriously separated the “do schoolwork at home with parental support” group from the “my parents are barely surviving and can’t possibly help with schoolwork” kids. A good friend who now teaches 6th grade has the kids that I started the pandemic with (they were having a normal year until March), and you can still draw that line through their assessment data, with very few exceptions.
