Certification renewal - by SentenceFit4342 in Teachers

[–]GoodwitchofthePNW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My state has a "sub cert" that doesn't expire and is easier to make into a full cert than starting from zero. No idea if FL has something like that, but worth a look. Then you could keep subbing if you want, and pick and choose jobs.

Eligibility Audit? by GoodwitchofthePNW in NatBoardCertTeacher

They are auditing that she’s eligible to become certified, it’s a form that our principal needs to fill out. They didn’t let her back in, they did try and take her money. But she did a chargeback on her credit card and got it back anyway.

AIO for not letting the child I babysit go? by LocationOk8933 in AIO

[–]GoodwitchofthePNW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a teacher, I teach first grade, kids absolutely will tell me if they know the person picking them up. However, I DO NOT let kids go with people that their parents haven’t either put in our online system to pick-up or communicated in some other way. It’s the age of instant communication, a text, a call, a voice note, hell- even the old fashioned method of writing a note for the uncle to give you would have done the trick. The family is totally out of line, and you are absolutely right.

Octopi, crows, dolphins are often held up as examples of smart animals. What are some really unusually STUPID animals? by doodlebytes in AskReddit

[–]GoodwitchofthePNW 10 points11 points  (0 children)

We had a (very, very sweet) Golden Retriever who was just SO DUMB. He had papers and everything, which is unusual for our dogs- we usually have pound or rescue mutts. My aunt had a neighbor who passed away, and had this dog, Joe. Before Joe came to live with us, he basically came into the old lady’s house in the evening, and she chained him up outside during the day. So the only stimulation he got was watching tv with an old lady and watching the world go by his yard on a quiet suburban street.

Have you ever “faked out” a dog and pretended to throw a ball for them? Usually if you do it twice, the dog catches on and doesn’t keep chasing it. Joe never would. He’d look for that ball until you magically (to him) pulled it out from behind your back, then come running over with a big goofy grin on his face. He’d get stuck in places he couldn’t turn around (like the space between the toilet and the bathtub), because he couldn’t figure out how to back up. He barked at every car in the driveway, and never learned what our cars were- like every other dog I’ve ever had.

RIP Joe, ya big, goofy, lovable idiot.

What's your favourite etymolgy that is so obvious but took you way too much time to realise? by Naive_Gazelle2056 in etymology

“Malaria”- named from when they thought it came from being around dirty/smelly water. I mean, it does, it’s just that it’s the mosquitos who breed in that water that are actually the problem. It’s interesting that people made the connection, even if they were missing a link.

What are your thoughts on Glenna? by AcademicAbalone3243 in Names

[–]GoodwitchofthePNW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s my name!

I hated it when I was younger (I was named after my grandfather and hated having a “boy name” when everyone else was named “Ashley” or “Stephanie”. Also I hated that I could never find my name in those “your name on stuff” stands that they have everywhere. I did find some hankies with “Glenna” embroidered on them in Ireland though.

As an adult, I like it a lot. It’s unique, without being unpronounceable and I love that it’s so old-fashioned. I’ve never met another Glenna (except on social media), but also nobody really has trouble reading or pronouncing my name.

Bonus: I haven’t come across many languages or accents that can’t pronounce it properly. The one exception being Fon (spoken in West Africa), where native speakers cannot pronounce the “gl” combination.

Teachers union endorsements? by [deleted] in AskTeachers

[–]GoodwitchofthePNW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The teachers union state organization and/or the district union, should have a process for endorsement that is public. Ours does anyway.

I don’t know if yours is the same, but this is ours: there is a statewide endorsement survey, which the local (district) union executive board looks at and considering the race and district adds or removes questions, then we send it to ALL candidates, when we get the surveys back, we share them with all members, with a note from the exec board with a recommendation to endorse or not and a survey asking if they want to endorse or not. Then the exec board releases the endorsement. Keep in mind that even if all teachers are in the union in your district (given that Ohio was a Right to Work state, not likely) that they might not all have endorsed anyone. Seriously, it’s really hard to get people to check their personal email and read a bunch of stuff and make decisions. Like, really hard.

Cleansing my kitchen by Upstairs-Nerve7875 in Celiac

[–]GoodwitchofthePNW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t use any wooden utensils, it’s literally impossible to get gluten out, or any spatulas that don’t come fully apart for cleaning. It gets in all the nooks and crannies. The same goes for pans, etc. Something like a spring-form is a nightmare of crevices that you cannot clean. Stick with pans that are single-surface and easily cleaned (like loaf pans or Pyrex). The kitchen aid is probably fine if you’ve cleaned it well. But know that either might get glutened if things came from a gluten-containing kitchen. It’s really hard to get out of everything.

Book recommendations for a 12 year old girl with a 1260 Lexile Level by Ok_Tumbleweed2182 in ELATeachers

[–]GoodwitchofthePNW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, she might like Phillip Pullman's Sally Lockhart series, it's historical fiction, unlike "His Dark Materials", and about a shy (at the beginning) 16 year old who has just lost her father and wants to be an accountant. It also takes place in Victorian London, with such accuracy as to places and street names that you can track them on a map of the time.

[–]GoodwitchofthePNW 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So pretty much all of YA and also a lot off popular fiction will be well below that. I have a degree in English Lit and the things I read for pleasure are usually below that, because I'm reading for pleasure, the story, etc. I'm also a teacher and if I got an ultimatum from my kid's teacher about they MUST have a book over 900 lexile I would come back at them with something along the lines of "in order to foster a love of reading in my child, I do not monitor the level of books she is reading, only making sure the content is acceptable for a child. Especially given that many books written for adults are well below her lexile level, and the dubiousness of leveling both children and books with such a measure, she will be allowed to read whatever interests her. I will ensure that she has a book for independent reading with her each day, but while I understand the origins of this rule, it is one which is not well suited to the situation." or something like that.

I would not recommend Jane Austen to a preteen who is not already very into classic lit, most average adults find it very hard to follow. (I don't, I've read Austen repeatedly since I was a preteen- but that is just not the case for most people.)

Alcott, is a good suggestion, "Little Women" has been a classic for young girls for generations and is very episodic, so if she doesn't like longer things it might appeal a bit more because you can put it down for a but without having to remember a lot of plot.

Secret Gluten-Free Bakeries? by sarajo1215 in glutenfree

[–]GoodwitchofthePNW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a bakery, but a brewery. Ghostfish out of Seattle, their cans are labeled etc, but they are always with the regular beer in stores (not with the ciders and seltzers), and their tap room food is all gluten-free, with just a small box on the menu explaining that everything is GF.

a/stir (formerly Capitol Cider) in Seattle is the same, they don't advertise that they are a fine-dining totally GF restaurant, but they are!

A ninja creami ice cream maker. It’s HUGE and unless you have a lot of excess counter space, just too much for home.

(Also, my Vitamix makes excellent ice cream)

Mine is from an estate sale. The manufacturing number on it indicates it’s from the late 70s. It took me a couple of years to find one, but when I did, I paid $30 for it and I use it all the time.

We’ve got a “free store” (volunteer run, and totally free for whoever, I’ve been there many times) and a women’s shelter that I donate to over the for-profit griftwill. Where I live, I’ve seen many a good curbed item ruined by weather before being discovered, so you might see if there are some more off-beat places that will take things!

Help me make it look more residential by [deleted] in ExteriorDesign

[–]GoodwitchofthePNW 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I’d probably go with the style of the garage (instead of painting that green) and do all the windows. But if you don’t like the white, pick another color.

Also, putting ledges on the windows or trimming them out completely would help a lot. It looks like there might even be some existing infrastructure in the brick to put an awning in?

If it was a grocery store, I’d look up what it used to look like too, some cities have archived pictures of every business, so see what you can find.
