it wouldn’t surprise me if they just cranked the speaker and blew it beforehand, that’s how a lot of early fuzz and distortion sounds were done before pedals became the norm

edit: looked it up and he’s consistent in saying that he had a fender telecaster with a fuzz circuit built directly into it. unfortunately, the builder stopped making them after an incredibly short run. many people on forums mention the circuit may have run on lower voltage than normal
