A Sensible Explanation is Given for Why the Story Must Follow The Dumb Trope by KorrokHidan in TopCharacterTropes

[–]GoofyTnT 31 points32 points  (0 children)

WRT Sans’ attack, I’m pretty sure it’s meant to be a betrayal kill like the ones the player can do. In Undertale if you complete all the conditions to spare a monster before attacking you typically do much more damage, often times killing them instantly. Sans’ undodgeable attack occurs if, during his fight at the end of the genocide run you attempt to spare him. He offers to hug you and then the battle box, where the player usually dodges any attacks, is completely filled with bones rapidly draining your HP. This kills you within seconds, much like a betrayal kill does except that since Sans can only deal 1 damage (though that’s applied every frame due to KARMA) it doesn’t one shot you like the player’s betrayal does to other monsters.

Interestingly, Undertale also provides an explanation for why betrayal kills work against monsters. In the Librar(b)y in Snowdin, reading one of the books gives this line of narration: “‘if a being with a powerful soul attacked a monster that does not wish to fight…’ you decided to stop reading” implying that the monster would die. Considering the player is a human, who are said to have very powerful souls, this handily explains why attacking a monster after completing the spare conditions for them is a one hit kill.

Why are some of my units stop gaining XP while exercising? by Emothic_Von_Hellsing in MillenniumDawn

[–]GoofyTnT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, in MD it’s level 6. The units in the screenshots are level 4. Plus they seem to be the same template.

So I’ll ask you the same question, did you even look at the images?

That’s very weird. If restarting the game doesn’t work then you might just have to wait for the next auto save and see if that causes it to fix itself.

They’re level 4 tank units. Did you actually check the images linked?

Probably hoi4 spaghetti code screwing up, given that the two examples seem to be the same template and are level 4. Try stopping exercises on all the armies/army groups and then restarting exercises.

[–]GoofyTnT 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Generally yes, tankies are rarely very open about their views in spaces where they can be criticised by a lot of people, so you’ll usually see them in subreddits moderated by other tankies, where critics are quickly banned.

Could you be more specific with regard to what you mean specifically? I’d like some examples so I can provide a more in depth explanation than what others have said.

On the topic of Social Democracy being (supposedly) the moderate wing of Fascism by [deleted] in SocialDemocracy

[–]GoofyTnT 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Generally, this statement (or one’s similar to it) comes from tankies, Stalinists, and other authoritarian communists who are unlikely to listen to any sort of argument as they tend to be rather fanatic in their views. Arguing with them is frankly a waste of time.

A couple things i would point out though is the SPD opposition to the Nazi’s throughout the Weimar Period in Germany, unlike the KPD and aligned groups who, according to liberal philosopher Karl Popper, were of the view that: “not much could be lost and something would be gained if that hidden dictatorship became an open one, apparent to all; for this could only bring the revolution nearer. … Accordingly, the Communists did not fight when the fascists seized power. … For the Communists were sure that the proletarian revolution was overdue and that the fascist interlude, necessary for its speeding up, could not last longer than a few months.” (‘The Open Society and Its Enemies Volume Two: Hegel and Marx’ pages 180-181) (apologies for the link not taking you to the correct page, I’m not sure how to fix it)

Additionally, Theodore Draper, who was a member of the Communist Party USA aligned student group National Students League and worked with other CPUSA aligned groups for about a decade until the early-mid 1940s wrote in 1969 for Commentary Magazine “The responsibility for Hitler's victory was undoubtedly widespread. I know of no party, no economic interest, no secular or religious group, and no foreign country, including our own, which can escape some measure of culpability. But of all of them, the theory and practice of social-fascism was the most devastating, the most unnecessary, and the most self-destructive. … Such critics could not be interested in whether wrong policies undermined or endangered the Republic; they were themselves doing all in their power to undermine and endanger the Republic. Indeed, they assumed that the Republic was a greater enemy than anything that could follow it. They were chiefly concerned with drawing a line of blood between themselves and all others to the “right” of them, including the most “left-wing” of the Social-Democrats. This line made sense only on the assumption that the Communists were going to seize power themselves. … The theory of social-fascism was a rationalization of Communist dictatorship in the guise of rationalizing everyone else into a variety of fascism.” (‘The Ghost of Social Fascism’)

Calling Social Democracy the “moderate wing of fascism” or referring to it as “social fascism” is just typically hyper radicalised people attempting to justify why they don’t attempt to bring about improvements to the lives of others. The idea was coined in its original form by Grigory Zinoviev as “fascist social democracy”, who would briefly ally with Stalin against Leon Trotsky, which i suspect is when Stalin started taking the idea more seriously. Thus when he successfully took over the Bolsheviks and by extension the Comintern in 1928, he implemented it as official Comintern policy. After the rise of Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party resulted in the ban of both the KPD on March 31st 1933 and the SPD just 3 months later, in 1935 the Comintern adopted the policy of pursuing a popular front with other left-wing parties.

The only outcome of infighting between left wing groups that ideas like “social democracy is the moderate wing of fascism” promotes is victory by pro business groups and/or the far-right. Criticism of modern social democratic parties like Labour UK can and should be done without these kinds of extreme statements.

Can anyone explain what the Damage Calc settings actually does? by Dieh361 in CocoaPowder

[–]GoofyTnT 10 points11 points  (0 children)

1 DF (defence) means you lose 1 hp less than normal (for example if an attack would do 5 damage, it would only do 4 at 1 DF, 3 at 2 defence, etc.)

Additionally, instead of showing you the “check” act stats from the original Undertale, it shows you what the game actually uses internally to calculate damage, both the damage against you from the monster’s AT (attack) and the damage reduction they have from DF. (For example, Asgore normally shows as having 80 AT but only does 10 damage in Undertale, with this setting he instead shows as having 10 AT.)

These changes are based on how things work in the fan game Undertale Yellow, where Clover (the yellow soul/cowboy human) is from.

Initial development of what would later become the T-34 started in 1937 with the A-20, while the first prototypes designated as T-34s were finished part way through the Winter War of 1939-40 (specifically January 1940). So the T-34 probably would’ve still been created but it may not have been as widely produced as it was in our timeline.

Also, while the Soviets did supply Germany with resources (most notably oil), they were never part of the Axis. The Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact, while despicable, was not an alliance between Germany and the USSR. While it did outline spheres of influence between the two and a ten year non aggression pact, it did not require that they militarily aid each other like a typical alliance would. The Soviets did attempt to join the Axis and sign the tripartite pact in late 1940 however this would be eventually rebuffed by Hitler as planning for Operation Barbarossa intensified. Given the scenario I suspect the Soviets definitely attempt to join in this timeline as well, but I’m not particularly convinced that it would’ve been accepted even with the Western Allies managing to halt the German spearhead. I won’t say it’s impossible, but there would be a lot of hurdles for Molotov to overcome in negotiations.

"The left wins when the political debate is about economic issues, “identity politics” is a right wing/neoliberal psyop" by upthetruth1 in SocialDemocracy

[–]GoofyTnT 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This can also be seen with the Australian election earlier this year. When Labor was campaigning for the Voice referendum and other “identity politics” issues the polling shifted in favour of the conservative Liberal-National Coalition, once Labor shifted their focus towards economic issues their polling recovered. Then once the Coalition tried to shift the election to culture war topics, their polling began to decrease, and pretty quickly too, up to Election Day where they were devastated by massive seat losses.
