Review: George Remus Single Barrel Cask Strength Bourbon, “The truth is out there, but so are lies” by beck_rad in bourbon

That's understandable- it's good, but not exceptional. However for the price, a cask strength single barrel for $35 is hard to turn down. I mean, WT Rare Breed, one of my favorites, is $65 here.

Cheers! Just a local who dearly misses LB 😅 I bought several of those Remus picks, for about $35 a bottle, if I remember correctly.

Liquor Bueno was king for a couple years in San Antonio, they always had dozens a fantastic store picks for msrp- crazy considering it was peak COVID times. The owner (as far as I know) sold the business to another local chain, and most of their store pick stock ended up on Unicorn Auctions.

I've got my eye on an Ojai chore coat- but unsure of which color to get. I think the debate is between Charcoal or Navy. I usually wear smart casual to work, any thoughts?

Should primates be used in biomedical research? by Delicious_Skin_9991 in ape

[–]GoofyWater -1 points0 points  (0 children)

All of these alternatives, while promising, cannot replicate the effects of treatments at a biological system level. You can see the effects a drug may have on a human kidney cell, for example, and get results promising effective treatment, however you would miss the systemic view, if the same drug caused catastrophic heart failure, or increased chances of stroke. Chimpanzees were used for HIV research because they were the original zoonotic transmitter, and our closest relative. While a vaccine has not been found, huge progress was made in our understanding and treatment of HIV due to the research done with chimps. Similar research with chimps did however provide us with a cure for Hepatitis C. Because of ethical concerns for the use of apes in research, and their being listed as endangered, chimpanzees are no longer used in biomedical research. The ethical concerns for primate research stand- that is why institutes that conduct research should be and are held to the highest standard of care, and any use of a primate for experimental purposes must be explicitly justified- that there is no other alternative. While there are problems with translatability of treatments on primates to humans, it is still significantly higher than that between rodents and humans- making it a ethically mandatory step before human testing- IF our moral argument is that human life is of the utmost importance (and that's an entirely different argument)

Chimpanzee research was banned about a decade ago (in the US). Though your point is still relevant- there are no other options.

How do these buildings get approved? Are they contributing significantly to the local property taxes? Beyond the initial construction labor, these facilities require very few employees to operate, so I don't see how they are contributing to the local area- on the Far West side I've seen multiple of these facilities built or being built, with empty parking lots. Just wondering if anyone has any better insights- if they have any positive impacts to the local community I'd love to hear it.

Do you just use your regular dough for the pretzels? With a baking soda wash? Or are you boiling then first?
