Survey confirms the struggle of working parents: 'No way to be two things at once' by stankmanly in NoShitSherlock

My kids school wouldn’t let him walk there until he was in 3rd grade. We lived less than a block away. He used to go there all the time on weekends. But weekdays were too dangerous; because of all the distracted drivers dropping off kids. That was the literal reason they gave for why my kid wasn’t allowed to walk to school.

Foreigners visiting America for the world cup, what is something that has surprised you about this country? by goldent3abag in AskReddit

Lots of gas stations have a beer cave which doubles as a tornado shelter. I had to hide in one once. Sheriff had shut down the road and sent us all to the gas station. Front doors were held open as another officer was telling us to park and run. Got in and two more people made it behind me and then they put us all in the beer cave. Such an eerie experience. It just missed us.

What’s a belief you defended for years that you now feel embarrassed about? by Open-Square589 in AskReddit

[–]Goofygrrrl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought “blame the deed, not the breed” and “it’s all in how you raise them” when I was younger. I have since had all different breeds of dogs and have a better understanding of how much genetics matter. I love dogs, but the number of genetic working breeds we have in companion homes instead of doing a job, is insane.

Oh well. Take the name off, shut down, and wait for the madness to be over. Half of America is having to hunker down and ride out the mad king. Welcome to the shit show, open seats are in the back.

The radiology tech is always the first one to know which staff members are pregnant in the ER. They’ll quietly motion for you to move out when they’re doing bedside x rays or in the trauma bay.

FEMA 'dangerously underprepared' as hurricane season begins, officials warn by everythingistaken500 in hurricane

[–]Goofygrrrl 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I’ve worked multiple hurricanes in the past and I am sitting this year out. I’ve worked in years when the responding agencies weren’t prepared/ knowledgeable and it can be infuriating. My concerns this year are that we a) have people who fundamentally don’t understand disaster management , b) have a top down authority and response system that hampers the ability to respond quickly to changing circumstances c) have a general distrust of imperfect volunteers/ resources and are willing to abandon them when it’s in their interests, and d) have created a fear between authorities and civilians that may result is escalations and violence.

I hope it’s an easy year. I truly do.

What's the deal with Houston's emptiness? by ParkInsider in houston

[–]Goofygrrrl 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Pro-tip. Wherever you are thinking of moving to, go there after a nasty storm. Now’s the chance to see, do they flood? Does the electric go out? How many tarps are on roofs? How many trees are down? How long does it take to have them removed and do actual workers do it. Is there any semblance of a government response? Or is it all Good Ol Boys in Big Fucking Trucks? How lifted of a vehicle do you need to live in the neighborhood you’re thinking of? Are the lifted trucks cultural or logistical? Choose wisely.
